A Field Guide to Getting Lost, by Rebecca Solnit

Whether she is contemplating the history of walking as a cultural and political experience over the past 200 years (Wanderlust), or using the life of photographer Eadweard Muybridge as a lens to discuss the transformations of space and time in late 19th-century America (River of Shadows), Rebecca Solnit has emerged as an inventive and original writer whose mind is daring in the connections it makes. A Field Guide to Getting Lost draws on emblematic moments and relationships in Solnit's own life to explore issues of wandering, being lost, and the uses of the unknown. The result is a distinctive, stimulating, and poignant voyage of discovery.

From Publishers Weekly
The virtues of being open to new and transformative experiences are rhapsodized but not really illuminated in this discursive and somewhat gauzy set of linked essays. Cultural historian Solnit, an NBCC award winner for River of Shadows: Eadweard Muybridge and the Technological Wild West, allows the subject of getting lost to lead her where it will, from early American captivity narratives to the avant-garde artist Yves Klein. She interlaces personal and familial histories of disorientation and reinvention, writing of her Russian Jewish forebears' arrival in the New World, her experiences driving around the American west and listening to country music, and her youthful immersion in the punk rock demimonde. Unfortunately, the conceit of embracing the unknown is not enough to impart thematic unity to these essays; one piece ties together the author's love affair with a reclusive man, desert fauna, Hitchcock's Vertigo and the blind seer Tiresias in ways that will indeed leave readers feeling lost. Solnit's writing is as abstract and intangible as her subject, veering between oceanic lyricism ("Blue is the color of longing for the distance you never arrive in") and penses about the limitations of human understanding ("Between words is silence, around ink whiteness, behind every map's information is what's left out, the unmapped and unmappable") that seem profound but are actually banal once you think about them.

From The New Yorker
This meditation on the pleasures and terrors of getting lost is-as befits its subject-less a coherent argument than a series of peregrinations, leading the reader to unexpected vistas. The word "lost," Solnit informs us, derives from the Old Norse for disbanding an army, and she extrapolates from this the idea of striking "a truce with the wide world." It's the wideness of the world that entices: a map of this deceptively slender volume would include hermit crabs, who live in scavenged shells; marauding conquistadors; an immigrant grandmother committed to an asylum; white frontier children kidnapped by Indians; and Hitchcock's "Vertigo." Solnit imagines a long-distance runner accumulating moments when neither foot is on the ground, "tiny fragments of levitation," and argues, by analogy, that in relinquishing certainty we approach, if only fleetingly, the divine.

From Booklist
One can literally get lost in a city or the wilderness, or one can lose one's self, one's memories, one's spiritual grounding, one's way through the labyrinth of love. And by getting lost, much can be found. Lannan Award winner Solnit, a penetrating cultural historian, has written books about landscape, the wild, art, and activism. Here she ponders the Zen of getting lost in a lithesome essay collection. Using the evocative color blue as a polestar, she roams from her roots in Bialystok to the Great Salt Lake and beyond, entwining autobiography with musings on exile, how photographs both create and displace memories, captivity narratives, urban ruins, music, the death of a friend, the "deterioration of the local," and the brief, bright life of artist Yves Klein. Solnit not only thinks innovatively and writes beautifully, she also trips the wire in the mind that hushes the static of routine concerns and allows readers to perceive hidden aspects of life, thus opening up new inner vistas for us to explore, even to the point of getting blissfully lost. Into the Blue
By Jimmy Neenan
The social perception of loss is denotatively and connotatively negative. It's a word we associate with the agonies of death, the frustrations of deprivation, and the erosion of what was into what is not.

To lose is to succumb to the fate that awaits us all--the diminutive sense of depletion and reduction. Solnit, though, disagrees. In her stunning collection of essays that make up A Field Guide to Getting Lost, for Solnit, loss is a transformative force, rather than a negative one--a powerful impetus for change that moves into the world of the liminal--the spaces between moments rather than the spaces that constitute moments.

Relying on notable figures ranging in discipline and trade from Henry Thoreau, Conquistador Cabeza de Vaca, and Parisian performance artist and judo extraordinaire Yves Klein to pull her through from a state of solidity to that of the fluid, that of the blue itself--Solnit walks us through landscapes and worlds that are altogether foreign and exotic, to strangely convey the most familiar landscape of all--change.

Solnit alternates between the constant imagery of the solid, the grounded, the ideas that allow us to plant ourselves in the constant--only to transition into that of the "blue"--that of the ethereal and atmospheric, that of the liminal. Every other essay is titled: "The Blue of Distance" allowing for discussion of the philosophical means of the color blue as an aesthetic principle and metaphor of fluidity--the intent of which is to bring us into the space between relinquishment and acquisition--giving and taking.

More than a simple collection of essays, where Solnit succeeds is in the connection to the personal. We create ourselves through our association with others, picking and choosing tidbits of cultural ephemera we deem appropriate to absorb into our own lives--to make our own--making Solnit's viewpoint wholly relatable. She almost takes the form of overt autobiography. Association with Solnit's points becomes inherent.

Although, the collection seems sporadic at times--the essays jump and move and transition like a child hopping from puddle to puddle mid-rain storm--hence the exploratory milieu, making the readability erratic. A singular essay can cover topics ranging in breadth from her own home life, the world of the Conquistador and pre-colonial United States, to the diminishing microbes of our environment, and the death of the desert tortoise. It's fascinating and intriguing, but at times comes across disjointed.

Nevertheless, A Field Guide to Getting Lost is a philosophical treatise on the idea of flux--the essence of the middle, and the spaces between places in which our bodies and psyches transition to worlds and climes that are foreign and beautiful. The book is a success in that it reminds us, yet again, that the only constant in life is change.

Collection Good but not always coherent

My favorite book by Solnit is Wanderlust:a History of Walking. I enjoyed these essays but found myself getting lost at times. They would have benefited from some editing for focus and clarity.

I love this book for many reasons
By jessmina
I love this book for many reasons.

We all know that writing is a form of art and I love this book because Rebecca Solnit takes the art of writing to another level to the point where her readers actually DO GET LOST in her work. I honestly did not read this book from start to finish because I believed there was no need to. After the first few chapters I was fully satisfied and struck deeply by her words. This book is not coherent and it is fragmented with stories and I think that is a depiction of what life is like. There is no linear passageway and sometimes our lives walk amongst crooked paths before they can become straight again and I feel that her writing style mimics that idea.

Just buy the book and stop reading it when you feel lost. It'll be worth the journey.

Poetry. Asian & Asian American Studies. Women's Studies. Translated from the Japanese by Jeffrey Angles. Set simultaneously in the California desert and her native Japan, tracking migrant children who may or may not be human, or alive, Hiromi Itō's WILD GRASS ON THE RIVERBANK will plunge you into dreamlike landscapes of volatile proliferation: shape-shifting mothers, living father-corpses, and pervasively odd vegetation. At once grotesque and vertiginous, Itō interweaves mythologies, language, sexuality, and place into a genre-busting narrative of what it is to be a migrant.

About the Author
Hiromi Itō emerged in the 1980s as the leading voice of Japanese women's poetry with a series of sensational works that depicted women's psychology, sexuality, and motherhood in fresh and dramatic new ways. In the late 1990s, she relocated to southern California, and since then has written a number of important, award-winning books about migrancy, relocation, identity, linguistic alienation, aging, and death. Her collection Kawara Arekusa won the 2006 Takami Jun Prize, which is awarded each year to an outstanding, innovative book of poetry, and is now published in English translation (WILD GRASS ON THE RIVERBANK, 2015), by Action Books. A selection of her early work appears in KILLING KANOKO: SELECTED POEMS OF HIROMI ITō (Action Books, 2009). Both collections are translated by Jeffrey Angles.

Jeffrey Angles lives in Kalamazoo, where he is an associate professor of Japanese and translation at Western Michigan University. He is the author of Writing the Love of Boys (University of Minnesota Press, 2010) and the award-winning translator of dozens of Japan's most important modern Japanese authors and poets.

"Naturalized" as never before.
By Guttersnipe Das
As I read and reread this gorgeous and unnerving book, I thought of an afternoon in graduate school when I went to my adviser and confessed to him that I liked the way that poets told stories much more than the way prose writers did. He agreed with me very seriously and quietly, as though I had discovered something true, but which could not safely be discussed in public.

As evidence, here is Wild Grass on the Riverbank, one of the first narrative book-length poems to be written in modern Japan. Gory and explicit, damning and redemptive in turns, this book is required reading for poets, storytellers, wanderers, rebels, and ecologists -- for anyone who aims to survive.

This long poem, in 18 parts of varying lengths, is written in a combination of prose and poetry, in language that is sometimes childlike, sometimes scientific, and must have been fiendishly difficult to translate. Angles’ translation’s conveys a tremendous emotional force while giving a sense of the different registers of language through which Ito cavorts with both daring and playfulness.

When I began reading this book I was pulled in first by curiosity, enjoying Ito’s wild narrative strategies and her utter willingness to convey the full messy details of life and death, neither of which is ever a closed category or final state. (For Hiromi Ito, as for Jose Saramago, death is only an interruption. It comes and goes.)

As I read further, then reread, what finally impressed me most was the emotional and incantatory power of long sections like “We Live at the Riverbank” and “We Make Our Way In”, unified narrative poems that are both edgy and exultant and can suddenly flash with a force that brings to mind Alvaro de Campos or Whitman.

Jeffrey Angles, increasingly well-known for his fine translations of Chimako Tada, Taruho Inagaki, and Takahashi Mutsuo, earlier published a translation of “Killing Kanako”, the book that first brought Hiromi Ito renown in Japan. In his introduction Angles refers to other books by Ito: a book of prose poetry, as well as novellas and essays. I hope very much that more of this work can be made available in English.

One of the most important poets of modern Japan, Hiromi Ito has been called a “shamaness of poetry”. Exactly right. Here is poetry that is unafraid to strip bare, copulate or reek, hiss or howl. An exploration of being “naturalized” in every sense of the word: an unending series of changes, deaths, ecstasies, resistances, and transformations.

A Must-Read
By Raechel L. Dumas
While Wild Grass on the Riverbank is comprised of a series of individual poems, together they form a carefully crafted narrative that begins with a series of memories from the speaker’s childhood. Wild Grass delivers that which readers of Itō’s earlier work might expect, revealing the inextricability of beauty and abjection, body and psyche, Eros and Thanatos. This collection makes provocative use of natural imagery as a diverse array of plant life creeps into each and every textual crevice. At moments the natural world is figured as an invasive, suffocating force; at others it is a refuge, as well as a signal of the possibility of survival.

Perhaps the most compelling feature of this collection is its exploration of the relationship between mother and child, which is here presented through the eyes of its young narrator in a kind of reversal of the perspective issued in Itō’s earlier collection, Killing Kanoko. Here, as in her earlier work, Itō is deeply engaged with questions of the maternal, a vital topic in contemporary Japan, where the enduring concept of bosei (maternal love) continues to shape notions of female bodily economy in the domestic and public spheres. The story that unfolds in Wild Grass is also one of migration, of homelessness and of making a home (in this respect, the collection has strong resonances with the work of Itō’s contemporary, Tawada Yōko). Ultimately, Wild Grass tells a story of, to quote one of the poems therein, “multiplying, dying, coming back to life, and multiplying again.”

Jeffrey Angles is a highly accomplished translator of modern Japanese poetry, and his renderings of Itō’s work are particularly outstanding. The translator’s introduction to Wild Grass includes a section on translation strategies, in which Angles describes in detail both linguistic features of the original poems and his approaches to the translation of unconventional language (e.g. colloquialisms, slang, children’s speech), complex formal expressions, punctuation (or lack thereof), and the abundance of plant names that appear in the collection. Angles expertly grapples with the difficult task of translating Itō’s work to produce a text that is both highly attuned to technical issues and strongly reminiscent of Itō’s distinctive style. Even more impressive, however, is that this translation beautifully conveys the complexity of the poetic speaker, a young woman who is engaged in her own grappling with language.

As Angles notes in his introduction, when a text is translated, possibilities emerge that were only latent in the original. I will add that this seems especially true of Wild Grass, in which words operate like rhizomes, continually revealing new variations, connections, and becomings.

A daunting task admirably done...
By nto62
Recording 200+ years of East India Company history is no small feat for, in such a work, this far-flung commercial enterprise produces a litany of ships, ports, merchandise, employees, currencies, costs, indigenous rulers, company directors, parliamentarians, military men, privateers, and scalawags. That John Keay kept it straight is admirable. That the reader can is even more so.

The Honourable Company is a witty, insightful and, at times, painstakingly detailed account of the East India Company's cyclical expansion, retraction, retrenchment, and re-expansion over the course of three centuries. From the island of St. Helena to Canton, China, Keay patiently plots the monopoly's course. Ever eager to highlight the irony, inanity, and ignominy characteristic of such an enterprise, Keay provides several humorous asides in addition to those moments when the reader can't but shake his head at these haughty, ill-informed, greedy and grasping monopolists.

Well-researched, well-written, and a delight to consume, The Honourable Company suffers only when the blander details of global trade begin to inhibit it's otherwise excellent pace. The sheer volume of material required to catalog an endeavor of this magnitude makes it difficult to entice the reader page after page. Yet, John Keay pulls it off smartly and for this The Honourable Company merits a rating of 4+ stars.

good writer - book could have been better
By Michael Jaffarian
At times I loved the writing. Plenty of great, amazing, 17th century adventure stories. It got hard to keep track of the characters. He fails to step back often enough and remind the reader of the broader patterns. In fact, I'm not sure he sees them himself. Plenty of material on British insensitive arrogance. Page 308 f is a hilarious story. I was unaware of how the French and British jostled for power in India in the 1700s. It would have been better with more maps and illustrations inserted at appropriate places. See page 424 for unfair cynicism. Much mockery of the company and its leaders. The title of the book is itself a mockery. This book is a reaction against the older, hero-oriented British imperial histories.

The Adventures of SUPERMANNY: Through My Eyes, by Holly Bueno

Supermanny is a 3 year old boy with Cerebral Palsy. He cannot speak or walk, but, he can dream. In his mind, he is not "broken." Supermanny sees daily activities very differently than we do. He does not let his disability cloud his ability to create an exciting and positive version of life in his own mind. That is his super power.

Holly wrote The Adventures of Supermanny in a hospital room, watching her son sleep after a major surgery. Most days she remains strangely optimistic, even through the hardest points in her life. On January 22, 2012, her superhero was born. Baby Manny sustained total brain damage at birth and was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy. Defying all odds, her son lovingly earned the name Supermanny. Holly, her husband, and their two daughters were destined to change the way people would view disabilities forever. Today, she is still able to live a fun and balanced life with her family and friends. She enjoys spending too much time at the gym, participating in mud runs, drinking wine with the wittiest name brands, and pushing the limits wherever she can! Holly and her family continue to show everyone that the only true disability is a bad attitude.
