It's Okay...

I also have the official study guide and these practice tests seem a lot easier than the ones in the official study guide. However, they're still good for overall practice. Be on the watch for errors in the Kindle version. On practice test 3, the first math question is 4 and 2/3 X 6 and 1/2 and none of the choices are the correct answer. Turns out, it's a typo and should've been an addition question but it's frustrating trying to double and triple check to make sure you didn't do anything wrong.

Good book but too easy

Format is great, easy to use, and good explanations of the answers for the most part. The questions here are a good way to review basic material; however, none of the practice tests prepared me for the actual exam. Not sure if I just got a much harder version of the test but the questions in the book can't compare in terms of level of difficulty. I did like the book and don't have anything bad to say about it except that it was WAY too easy and didn't prepare me well.

I don't know if anyone else who bought this book noticed that it's full of errors and missing pieces! Every single graph in this book is missing some part to it, making you feel stupid trying to figure out the answer when the graph or map is contains incomplete items

STILL A MUST HAVE Book for Arduino Hobbyists

Having just started using the Arduino last summer, I can say that this is the ABSOLUTELY BEST book a person could get to become familiar with the Arduino. I've been an electronics hobbyist for years but mainly dealt with analog world with minimal interest in too much on the digital side. I did programming but never with a microprocessor until I got my Arduino last summer. Now I'm hooked. Unfortunately, the usual books for "helping" with Arduino give sketches and explain bits and pieces without ever doing an overview of the system. However, this book is fantastic. Just got it today and have read over half of it; I've marked it up with pen to remind myself of crucial facts that I wish I had known a few months back. I programmed in Fortran (antique language) and BASIC before, but never learned the C programming language (the language of the Arduino). Thankfully, this book assumes no knowledge of C language and holds your hand through the process. It does a wonderful job explaining what each section of the programming does, it explains the hardware of the board, and it explains how the board communicates with the computer. At long last, instead of just copying and pasting someone else's program and hoping I can modify it to work for my own purposes, I can understand WHY certain things work the way they do.

UPDATE: I've had this book for over five months, and I still maintain that you have GOT to have this book. I have used it so much that I've about worn it out. Yes, the info that is in the book can be found elsewhere, but he covers so much material so well in such logical places. If you're trying to understand how and why Arduino sketches work the way they do, BUY THIS BOOK!

UPDATE 2: I STILL stand by my review of almost a year ago. I have used this book so much in referring to things that I may have to order a second copy as insurance in case I misplace the first. To be such a small book, it packs a lot of punch. It's written at just the right level for beginners who are just learning about Arduino and microprocessors in general, and he points you to all the resources on the web for further information. The book is practical and useful and just plain fun to read. So instead of having to copy and paste everyone else's code all the time, read this book to understand at least the basics of WHY things work in an Arduino the way they do.

Good for beginners but could be a little more detailed

I am experienced with microcontroller systems but new to Arduino. Here's what I think of this book:
THE GOOD:
+ For a beginner it's very readable and isn't "here's a bunch of theory and then we do fun stuff". The book is very much hands-on oriented, giving just enough explanation related to the task at hand (which is both good & bad, more on this below)
+ Book is thin and small, will not cause "I have to read and understand all that?" anxiety for beginners
THE BAD:
- The use of timer interrupts is not discussed at all in this book. I found this disappointing as timer interrupts are a common way to handle "background" tasks (this is where you can run code at specific time intervals). One could argue that this is not a beginner topic but since pin interrupt-on-change interrupts ARE discussed I think timer interrupts should have been as well. UPDATE: The follow-up book Programming Arduino Next Steps: Going Further with Sketches (Tab) covers timer interrupts and other fun stuff.
- There are many issues that could be expanded on, even a couple of sentences would be helpful. Examples include:
Arduino maximum pin current sink/source & applied voltage limitations. This is briefly mentioned in Chapter 1, but the author just mentions to be careful to not exceed the 40mA current limitation. He should have also mentioned that you can damage the chip this way (also if you exceed max voltage to an I/O pin). This should have been repeated in Chapter 6 which deals with digital interfacing. One of the most common mistakes in interfacing is overlooking the max operating specifications and damaging the chip or decreasing long-term reliability.
In Chapter 10 where the author discusses Ethernet shields he mentions that you need the "official" shield based on the Wiznet chipset rather than the cheaper ones based on the Microchip ENC28F60 chip. He could have stated why - the reason is because the Wiznet chip handles the gory details of TCP/IP communication for you (and is more expensive than the ENC28J60 which requires the host chip to do the TCP/IP processing, which is NOT suitable for beginners).
OVERALL, it's a gentle introduction for beginners to Arduino. If you are new to Arduino I would recommend buying an extra board or chip in case you accidentally damage it. It can be helpful for troubleshooting to try the same code on a different board to see if the problem might be with the board. Also, search the internet for "10 Ways to Destroy an Arduino" to avoid expensive mistakes.

Simon Monk rules!

I normally do not write reviews but I love reading them and deciding whether to or not to purchase the item of interest based on the satisfactory level of others. So I now feel obligated to write a review. "We are firmly in the realms of theory rather than practice here", says Mr. Monk the author of the book on page 95. I will be honest I have not read all the book but from what I have read so far I can say it has not been much hands on which is not a bad thing; Monk sticks to his word and teaches you many concepts in a friendly manner. All his sketches are downloadable from his personal website and everything is wonderfully documented. I purchased another book since I am very novice when it comes to Arduino; "Arduino Workshop", a hands on Introduction with 65 projects by John Boxall. I am reading both at the same time and OMG is life sweet to me right now. If you want hands on consider Arduino Workshop, but if all you want is to become familiar with the Arduino theory this is your book. Lastly if you would like a little bit of both well...

A Downer of a Book

As the author says, this is a downer of a book. It attempts to use the National Emergencies Act of 1976 along with other constitutional and legal features of the U.S. system to propose a three-stage model of declarations of temporary states of emergency. The writing is somewhat crisp and vernacular, as if the heavy law parts were simplified, although it has teeth in some parts without being legalistic. Readers expecting detailed legal analysis will be disappointed. It's written at a low level. The best parts are the last two chapters which apply the book's ideas to a devastating attack scenario on Washington D.C.

A Useful Book

This is a pretty good book for people concerned about possible deterioration of American civil liberties in the event of further successful 9/11-type attacks. It is almost impossible to amend the U.S. Constitution. So Ackerman proposes laws that could be enacted by Congress and states that would help do this. It should be read in conjunction with Richard Posner's Catastrophe, which makes a case for some curtailment of civil liberties, given the dangers of the age we live in.

Good place to start

Ackerman's argument is straightforward. Future large scale terrorist attacks are probably going to happen, but happen infrequently. The problem after an attack is the uncertainty about immediate follow-on attacks; if terrorists successfully planned and executed one attack, they may have more in progress. Ackerman fears that in the rush to prevent attacks the President and the administrative organs will accumulate too much power and destroy our liberty. Worse, Presidents will be tempted to claim the country is at war, giving them even more power.

Ackerman advocates a temporary state of emergency which the president may declare of his own authority. The declaration would have a built-in sunset provision, with only congress capable of reauthorizing. Reauthorization would require an escalating supermajority; the longer the emergency persisted the smaller a minority of legislators needed to end it. The declaration would permit broad powers of arrest and detention after an attack. Such measures would presumably mitigate the risk of further attacks, as well as re-establish national sovereignty.

The book is thought provoking and worth reading, but there are problems with Ackerman's ideas. He assumes that the most pressing need in the immediate aftermath of an attack will be to reassure the public that measures are being taken to prevent further attacks. Reassuring the public is a concern, but I think it overextends a factor unique to 9/11. The actual attacks on 9/11 and the time needed to restore order was short. Aside from those stuck because of the airspace shutdown, most people were back to normal within a few days. The system disruptions were minimal.

Such a short event period is unlikely in future large scale terrorist attacks. Dirty or nuclear bombs, chemical or biological weapons will involve much greater disruptions for a longer period of time. The event will look more like Katrina then 9/11. Massive social breakdown, no police or fire services, looting, confusion over evacuation destinations and means of transportation, these problems will last for weeks if not months. Plus, any response will be hamstrung by the need to protect responders from the contaminant (radiation, virus, chemical residue on skin or clothing). So at the time Ackerman thinks feds will be rounding up thousands of suspected terrorists most national systems will likely be overwhelmed just coping the direct aftermath of the attack.

An even bigger problem is with Ackerman's assumption that terrorist attacks will be infrequent. This implies that the administration is capable of effectively stopping most attacks. If it fails to do so, wouldn't that initiate further restrictions of liberty which Ackerman fears? Put another way, if terrorists successfully execute an attack under existing laws, it implies those laws are inadequate to prevent terrorism. Cheap information flow implies the holes or flaws in the law will be exploited with increasing frequency until they are closed, and they will be exploited again if the holes are allowed to reopen. Closing those holes necessarily entails restrictions of liberties we now enjoy. This dynamic is I think the core of the problem, not the short term emergency response but the long term incremental battle between terrorists and the law. The state of emergency concept is flawed because it assumes temporary measures can have long term preventative effects.

In a sense this book was aimed too much at 9/11. That event featured an improbable combination of mass casualties through primarily conventional means, with no subsequent attacks for a period of several years. Future attacks are unlikely to follow this pattern. That said, it is a starting point for dealing with the reality that in the current system terrorism encourages a dictatorial presidency, and terrorism isn't going away. Framers of the Constitution sought systematic ways of preventing tyranny from taking root, but they did not envision mass casualty terrorism. We owe it to them and to our children to further their work.

Amazing photography that will take you on a journey without leaving the sofa!

Mr. Farr has a unique eye for capturing the 'Great American Road Trip'. Through the pages of his book, you are riding shotgun as he takes you on the journey of a lifetime across the American landscape via Historic US Route 20. Never heard of it? That's because when someone talks about that type of journey we automatically think about the old chestnut, 'Route 66'. Starting at the very beginning in Boston, Mr. Farr will highlight your tour with information that is both fascinating and not particularly well known. A slice of lost Americana that harkens back to the glamour days of long vacations taken in a huge automobile that easily seats six and a trunk that could fit a moose inside. It's like having a top notch tour guide along for the journey with a working knowledge of every mile along the road. The photography is crisp, striking, and has a flair for capturing the local spirit of the towns and cities that flank the well-worn pavement. With each turn of the page, you will travel miles, watching scenery change as you go West toward Oregon, where the end of the journey awaits...all without having to ever leave the comfy sofa! beautiful photos. would have liked more diverse info on what's along the Route. I am doing par- about 1200 miles, t of this route starting tomorrow! This book made me look forward to Nebraska, lol. I would also appreciate someone writing a travel book going the other way...west to east. People do travel that way you know. :)

Great for me. I was looking for a Math book with TI-Nspire as the graphing calculator to improve learning.

Great content for me. I was looking for a Math book that includes TI-Nspire guides as the graphing calculator to improve learning. And this one has lots of this infomation.
The book follows the IB topics in the way that I needed. It has very good explanations and examples, very well illustrated and completed with information about the theory of knowledge. I found a very good resource for my students.
My 4 stars rating is due to the price. It is too high for mexican purchase power, all my students can't afford it. Even for me is too expensive and I have to do a great, great effort to buy it.
