What is “the right price?”

Pricing is one of the trickiest elements of any business. Price too high and you risk losing business you want to win. Discount too often or too much, and you risk people thinking your product is cheap or you’re for sale. The other problem with a poor pricing strategy is that you will go broke selling to the wrong customers.

Peter Hill wants to help you.

In Pricing for Profit, Hill argues that “most businesses are already worth more than they have the courage to charge.”

What I love about Pricing for Profit is that Hill talks about the value scale and why pricing is really about what the value is to each customer or client. For example, I often shop at Whole Foods because it’s convenient (quick) and the quality is good. But it’s certainly not cheap. I shop at Amazon, on the other hand, because it is good and cheap. But it’s takes longer to get a new product in my hands than if I just walked into my neighborhood Best Buy.

Like the best business books, Pricing for Profit is meant to be actionable. Chapters on creating packages, choices, and options offer new ways to think about what you’re offering and how you’re selling. And the entire book is filled with action steps to think through how to implement a smarter pricing strategy for your business. Unless you have the whole pricing equation nailed down, you’re going to find something in this book that you can put to use in your business.

The fastest way to improve profitability

The quickest and most effective way to improve the profitability of your business is to raise your prices, according to Peter Hill in this book. You should also be aiming to increase the number of customers, the frequency of transactions, the average value of each transaction, and the efficiency of the business, but price rises have the fastest and most direct effect on your profits.

The problem is that most business owners find it very difficult to raise prices. People naturally want to please others and avoid the risk of complaints and confrontation, so they find it much easier to pursue almost any other course of action. Accordingly, the author provides numerous different suggestions of ways in which prices can be increased in a manner which minimises the amount of stress and the fear of losing valuable customers, including:

* Limit discounts, for example by requiring timely payment in exchange
* Replace all discounts with cash-back offers, as the cash is not given back until payment is made and it is more painful to give cash than a discount, so that the total amount given away is likely to reduce over time
* Use prices which are not round numbers, because they are less likely to attract bargaining
* Instead of giving discounts, add more value to your offering
* Make sure you communicate the value which you are providing
* Build future contact into the deal for the initial sale
* Have a very top-of-the-range option that is significantly more expensive than any other option; this will make your other offerings appear to have better value
* Ask customers for permission to increase prices
* Offer a money-back guarantee to justify a higher price

The contents of the book are easily understandable by a business person who has no training in financial management. I did not find anything particularly new while reading, but by the end of the book the author had thoroughly persuaded me that trying to win customers by offering bigger and bigger discounts is not likely to lead to a profitable outcome. I highly recommend the book for anyone who runs a business.

I couldn't put it down

I am an Indian and a Hindu and I would like to affirm that I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

If Hinduism stands for tolerance, I fail to see how other Indians could not read between the lines to see that she is quite attracted towards the Hindu approach to life as being wonderfully suited to every individual's aspiration to find a unique path to his or her own goals rather than the prescriptive approach followed by other faiths.

After getting a grasp of her own questioning, irreverant and open mind - I think she is more a Hindu than she is a Christian. I can totally relate to her.

It is totally true that most North of India is patronizing towards women, it totally true that there is dirt and filth, it is totally true that the weather is oppressive - and if all that is true - would it not be a writer's duty to report it as it actually is? But wait a minute - if in spite of all this, she was totally overwhelmed with the affection showered on her by the people - to the extent that she weeps when she bids adieu to the country, is it not the ultimate tribute to India?

Why is it that we are are conditioned to be admired only for our material possessions, our so called victories or our magnificent monuments? Our most endearing possession is the warmth in our hearts and Sarah responds to that better than she does to anything else.

Her name is Sarah. I believe that she is Sarasvati incarnate :o)..as I indeed believe that Sarah and Abraham were none other than Sarasvati and Brahma who migrated West after Brahma's fall of favor within the Hindu religion.

I would love to be able to chat with her some time and get to know her.

Faith/belief enrichment

I found this to an interesting read, especially the descriptions of the various religions/faiths seen through the eyes of a non-believer/atheist. Some of the ways the author describes her encounters with the various belief systems has enlightened me to his they practice their faiths.

This is a well-written account of the time she spent in her adoptive country and her way of integrating into society.

"Mozart at the Gateway to his Fortune" is a new book by the distinguished Bach and Mozart scholar Christoph Wolff. The book takes its title from a quote by Mozart who, after he had been appointed "Imperial Court Composer" in Vienna in 1787, exclaimed subsequently: "I now stand at the gateway to my fortune." Ironically and sadly, Mozart died soon thereafter and never walked through that gate of fortune.
Christoph Wolff presents a detailed account of Mozart's life and works during his final three years, 1788 to 1791, and he decisively challenges a long-held scholarly and popular belief that Mozart was worn out, that he anticipated his early death, and that he wrote some of his late works as farewell gestures to the world. Not so, argues Professor Wolff. He shows that Mozart not only remained focused and energetic (even though he was often worried and sick), but he re-vitalized his music with novel combinations of sound and structures, which we can hear in his last three symphonies, his last two operas, his late concerti, chamber and liturgical works. Cases in point are "Die Zauberfl�te," "La clemenza di Tito," the "Requiem." In all these works Mozart not only expanded the genre but re-invented it. In "Die Zauberfl�te" he changed the desgnation from "singspiel" to "gro�e Oper" (grand opera), indicating a new and wider range of musical and dramatic effects, and in the case of "La clemenza di Tito" he added to the traditional concept of "opera seria" the designation of "vera opera" (a true opera) in his thematic catalogue. Even in his final and unfinished work, the "Requiem," he attempted to create a new and "pure" musical expression. Most intriguing perhaps is Christoph Wolff's finding that Mozart, who had become thoroughly familiar with Bach's and Handel's counterpoint and polyphonic techniques in Vienna, was alert, inventive, and adventurous enough in his final years that he used the compositional designs of the old masters to create his own "modern" and personal musical language.
Christoph Wolff's book is relatively slim and concise, yet it contains a rich assortment of illustrations of Mozart autographs and offers a rare account of the composer's unfinished sketches (ca. 140 pieces), music "composed," as Mozart once wrote, "but not yet written." Wolff's presentation is detailed, painstaking,intelligent, and unsentimental. It not only offers a new understanding of Mozart's depth of creativity in his final years, but it is one of the most enlightening contributions to Mozart scholarship in general.

A MOZART IN HIS PRIME AND CUT OFF IN HIS PRIME

The various musicians' testimony to the value of this book (e.g., Brendel, Harnoncourt, Gardiner) speaks for itself. Wolff shows us a Mozart, in his own words, at the "gateway" to his fortune, busy, full of ideas, and, alas, leaving behind much unfinished testimony to a number and variety of iworks he never completed. This book stimulatingly challenges a number of shaky assumptions about Mozart's career and especially his later career..

Good book.

This book tries to dispel the fact that
Mozart was at an end mentally by
1591.

It is very well written and the thesis
that he was in 1791 in the beginning
of a new phase (musically) is well defended.

But mentally, and that is the point above all,
as many have shown (Maynard Solomon, *Mozart: A Life*, 1995),
Mozart felt not that great as Wolff tries to show.

Indeed, the fact that Wolff does not answer
Solomon's statements, based on many evidences,
like Constance's declaration that her husband thought
that he has been poisoned (clear mental depression)
or Mozart's feelings about the sweet death as a liberation,
convince me still that Mozart's "imperial style" was his great
goodbye.

If Wolff had tried to answer Mozart's letter to his father
dealing about death or the reports of Mozart's intimate circle
that he was feeling alone and empty, in short, Mozart's personal
(not musical) isolation, then this book would have
been circularly perfect. As it is, it needs to answer Solomon who
stands for me, here, as the most penetrating analyst of Mozart
as composer AND man.

The opening sequences of the movie Saving Private Ryan reproduced the landing of the U.S. armed forces at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. An attentive observer would have noticed U.S. Navy corpsmen scurrying around the beachhead, infusing albumin intravenously into wounded soldiers. By the summer of 1941, pure human albumin had been prepared in the laboratory of Edwin J. Cohn (Figure) at Harvard Medical School. On December 8, 1941, the entire stockpile of human albumin at Harvard was seized by the government and flown to Honolulu, where it was infused into naval personnel who had been severely burned during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The albumin proved to be lifesaving in countless cases. Cohn established the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry at Harvard Medical School in September 1920. He gathered about him a distinguished group of chemists who were interested in defining the characteristics of proteins and peptides -- and they succeeded brilliantly. Nonetheless, eyebrows were raised among members of the medical school faculty over the presence of this sizable contingent of scientists engaged in what appeared to be the most esoteric sort of basic science. The endeavor was primarily supported by grants from the Rockefeller Foundation, whose trustees were informed by the foundation's George W. Gray in 1944 that "to create such a department in a medical school was a somewhat unusual and imaginative thing to do. . . . It was quite clear that these researchers would not be, at the moment nor for some long time to come, very closely related to the practical problems of sickness and health. But the Harvard authorities had the courage and the wisdom to back a patient, basic, long-range enterprise." It is difficult now to imagine how this endeavor flourished with a grant of only $15,000 a year from the Rockefeller Foundation and some funds from the university. Fifteen scientists were employed in the laboratory. In 1940, the National Research Council, perceiving a "terrorist threat" from Nazi Germany, contributed $1,500 more to the plasma-fractionation effort. Cohn appeared daily in the oak-paneled laboratory, clad in his three-piece Savile Row suits. Given the attire of Harvard professors these days, one realizes how much the world has changed in the past 60 years. One remnant remains. I still have Cohn's office blackboard, on the frame of which is inscribed the words of Goethe's Faust: "Das Blut ist ein ganz besonderer Saft" ("Blood is a quite extraordinary draught"). Edwin J. Cohn and the Development of Protein Chemisty describes at length and in detail Cohn's transformation from a laboratory chemist to the manager of a vast wartime effort that became a mini-Manhattan Project. Massive numbers of blood donations were required for the plasma-fractionation program, and this effort was skillfully coordinated with the Red Cross. Collaborations with clinicians were set up to test various plasma fractions. Two prisoners at the Norfolk County jail died of serum sickness induced by infusions of crystalline bovine albumin. Harvard medical students were admitted to the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and bled until they went into shock; they were successfully rescued with human serum albumin. At the height of the war, fractions containing gamma globulin were shown to attenuate or prevent measles and, subsequently, poliomyelitis. A blood-cell separator was invented. The accomplishments were numerous, and the prizes and honors followed in abundance at the end of the war. Edwin J. Cohn was an extraordinary and complex person. He aroused fear, loathing, and admiration in the people around him. He was at once cruel and compassionate, brilliant and obtuse. Fifty years after his death, people still spoke of him in hushed tones. He was a workaholic before the term was invented. Dead at 60 years of age from the hypertensive consequences of an undiagnosed pheochromocytoma, he left a scientific legacy that lives on long after him. Fred S. Rosen, M.D.
