A guilty pleasure that was quite entertaining =)

There are SO many step-brother books on the market right now and so many of them are really cheesy...so I am very fussy about which ones I deem worthy of my time. Reading these types of books is a guilty pleasure...like being on a diet and sneaking off to eat ice-cream when nobody is watching...but I can honestly say that Storm was a happy surprise, and even though there were some cliche and melodramatic parts, it was really quite good.
Rubi and Jax made a funny, cute couple...they were hilarious at times and very angsty, tense and sexual at others. The story had some emotional surprises and pangs as well, with some unexpected turns and a very nice resolution at the end.
The steam was pretty hot (illicit sexual encounters usually are) and yet it never felt sleazy or wrong...just a fantasy that many probably wish to happen.
If you like the new step-brother craze (or even if you don't)...this one is worth a read for a fun time...perfect for vacation or the beach.

In my humble opinion, I say skip this

I didn't like this book because at the end of the story, I ended up not liking both of the protagonists. In the beginning, I found myself hating the female protagonist, Rubi, because she was an 18 year old who was a brat with a nasty bad attitude. I could not figure out why, the male protagonist, Jax, desired her. The book was told in both of their POVs and spanned 4 years. I will admit that they had chemistry and their attraction was formidable. Yes, they were step siblings, but they were not blood related nor did they grow up with one another, so I didn't see any taboo in their budding relationship. Jax was older by a few years and I was amazed by his maturity, but in the end, he stated that if there was love, God's blessing was not needed. This statement bothered me so much as it told me that he felt love was not a gift or honor. It confused me because Jax's actions and words of love for Rubi contrasted that statement. I know that this is just a fictional story, but how can I enjoy the story when you don't like or root for the protagonists of the story. In my humble opinion, I say skip it.

As a fan of Stepbrother Romance I find Storm to have many of the elements I am looking for. The two characters do not initially get along and I appreciate that twist of angst and snark. Jax and Rubi are very sexy and their chemistry is explosive. Jax is not very likable, he is very fuqable. There is a difference. At times his level of smarmy confidence is a bit off putting and if not for the unwilling chemistry...Rubi probably would have castrated him. He's mean, he pulls her top off at the beach publicly and continues to flirt and touch other women after they have been intimate. Pretty awesome stuff if you like some drama with your stepbrother romance! The level of heat in this novel is hot enough to melt your kindle.
Some things I struggled with- it was apparent very early on that there was going to be a "big misunderstanding" that was going to drive these two apart and I wondered "how long will I have to suffer them apart at some point?" The answer? It's in the book. Ouch. I struggle with their separation and wondered if there wasn't another way for this story to be told-but it's not my story. They do work it out. There is a happily ever after.
Lastly, I do call into question the authors decision to have the epilogue separate from the actual book. If you want to read the epilogue you must sign up for the authors newsletter. I do hope the author changes this. I'm personally uncomfortable with being told I have to "sign up" for what should be included in the book. I did not take any stars away from the review for this mercurial tactic.

high quality book!

This is a very good quality, very useful activity book, that would meet several uses. Of course in a class room, which is where this will be used in a center. Also, I can see a parent buying this for the child to learn small motor skills.

Now, if you're thinking about making copies of the pages, it wouldn't work too well do to the color pages. But the quality is very good, with thick, card stock pages.

Highly recommended, I have no complaints here.

Use with the Cutting Book

I'm using this in conjunction with My First Book of Cutting with two 3-year-olds and a 4-year-old. The book is easy for the 4-year-old child who attends transitional kindergarten. The 3-year-olds have difficulty cutting, but they plow through it with enthusiasm. What I've found is that even though the 3-year-olds have difficulty cutting the straight lines in the Cutting Book, they do a fairly better job with this book.

I give my "students" the option of using Elmer's glue, glue stick, and tape. Two of them use the glue, one uses the glue stick, and all three love to reinforce with tape. Lots of tape. It's a great activity for children who need to be kept occupied for about 30 minutes, and it teaches them to clean up their work space as well.

Great reward system!

My three year old son would complete this whole entire book in one sitting if I allowed him to. I homeschool him (along with his siblings) and use this book as a reward system with him when he completes his school work. It's really a great book but an adult has to do all of the cutting. The pasting does get harder 10 pages in or so and your little one may need guidance with pasting some parts.

A great persona

The greatest strength of this novel is the voice and point of view of its narrator and protagonist Rowdy. Sandlin has done a wonderful job of creating a persona whose dry wit and pigheadedness creates much of the humor in this text. Rowdy's logic can be ridiculously close minded one minute and amazingly tolerant and wise the next. It is this character's contradictory nature and his uncomplicated view on life that gives this novel its innate charm.
Tim Sandlin is a gifted storyteller, and his writing has moments of sheer brilliance. You might be reading a chapter with a ridiculous plot element and all of a sudden stumble upon a line that stops you cold with its depth and singular power. This happened to me numerous times while reading this book, and I for one appreciate a text that has literary elements AND moments of simple "fun".
Be prepared for an ending that is more touching than the reader will be primed for. The situation that Sandlin creates between Rowdy and his son Tyson rings very true, as I know people who have found themselves in very similar circumstances. The reality of that subplot is actually uncomfortable and painful at times because of its harsh authenticity.
Overall "Rowdy in Paris" is a worthwhile and enjoyable read. Buy it. Maybe it will convince Mr. Sandlin's publishers to put more of his books back into print.

I confess I always like Sandlin, even when he's off kilter. This book I loved though, it's no half-measure from a half-hearted writer. Rowdy is all-in, chasing a French philosophy major to Paris to get back the prize-winner belt buckle he took at a rodeo. Lots of sex, plenty of humor, Wyoming with a nasal inflection and french food. Unlikely situations but familiar and funny characters. Best he's written since Sex and Sunsets, for my money.

Thank you once again Mr. Sandlin

Mr. Sandlin has finally embraced globilization. Well sort of. Introduce Rowdy Talbot a true American who has been wronged and according to the cowboy code he can't let that stand. But when he follows his stolen pize to France he discovers what a "fish out of water" truly means. This novel like "Jimi Hendrix Turns 80" faces American stereotypes and injects them with wisdom and a whole lot of humor. I have enjoyed almost all of Tim Sandlin's novels, but this may be his funniest. I got it on the 24th and finished it the same day.

Dr Qiuyu Wang is a Senior Research Fellow at the Manchester Metropolitan University. Her major research interest is in cancer biology and stem cell biology. She teaches many aspects of Molecular and Cellular Biology, and is co-editor of Biomedical Science Practice (OUP, 2010).

Dr Chris Smith was formerly a Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry at the Manchester Metropolitan University, where he taught biochemistry and cell & molecular biology at all levels.
