Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars, by Scotty Bowers

Newly discharged from the Marines after World War II, Scotty Bowers arrived in Hollywood in 1946. Young, charismatic, and strikingly handsome, he quickly caught the eye of many of the town’s stars and starlets. He began sleeping with some himself, and connecting others with his coterie of young, attractive, and sexually free-spirited friends. His own lovers included Edith Piaf, Spencer Tracy, Vivien Leigh, Cary Grant, and the abdicated King of England Edward VIII, and he arranged tricks or otherwise crossed paths with Tennessee Williams, Charles Laughton, Vincent Price, Katharine Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, Errol Flynn, Gloria Swanson, Nol Coward, Mae West, James Dean, Rock Hudson and J. Edgar Hoover, to name but a few.

Full Service is not only a fascinating chronicle of Hollywood’s sexual underground, but also exposes the hypocrisy of the major studios, who used actors to propagate a myth of a conformist, sexually innocent America knowing full well that their stars’ personal lives differed dramatically from this family-friendly mold. As revelation-filled as Hollywood Babylon, Full Service provides a lost chapter in the history of the sexual revolution and is a testament to a man who provided sex, support, and affection to countless people.

Review
“I have known Scotty Bowers for the better part of a century. I’m so pleased that he has finally decided to tell his story to the world. His startling memoir includes great figures like Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn. Scotty doesn't lie—the stars sometimes do—and he knows everybody.”—Gore Vidal

“Mr. Bowers, 88, recalls his highly unorthodox life in a ribald memoir . . . [A] lurid, no-detail-too-excruciating account of a sexual Zelig who (if you believe him) trawled an X-rated underworld for over three decades without getting caught. . . . [A] lot of what Mr. Bowers has to say is pretty shocking. . . . Full Service at the very least highlights how sharply the rules of engagement for reporting celebrity gossip have changed. . . . [I]t’s much harder to keep details as salacious as the ones Mr. Bowers outlines under wraps.”—Brooks Barnes, New York Times

"A jaw-dropping firsthand account of closeted life in Hollywood during the '40s and '50s. The wholesome image of the postwar American family was acted, written, directed, and designed by people for whom such a life was never possible and Bowers writes about their pain and brilliance with the childlike wonder of Chauncey Gardiner. Turner Classic Movies will never quite look the same."—Griffin Dunne, Actor/Director

“[Scotty Bowers] made his reputation by sleeping with everyone in Hollywood who wasn’t actually Lassie, and now he tells all. If you ever suspected that Spencer Tracy was bisexual and Tyrone Power a coprophiliac, and if you happen to believe everything you read, here is all the testimony you require.”—Anthony Lane, The New Yorker

“[Q]uel scandale!”—Vanity Fair

“This handsome ex-Marine and his friendly gas station have long been alluded to in Hollywood memoirs. And now, at last, they go public.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“The book is like a 286-page gossip column from Hollywood’s golden age—it names all the names and spills all the secrets. Bowers was a . . . free-love advocate far ahead of his time who claimed Cary Grant, Spencer Tracy, Edith Piaf and the Duke of Windsor (to mention just a few) as lovers.”—W Magazine, “February’s Most Wanted”

“[A] tell-all book . . . .Cary Grant, Rock Hudson, George Cukor, Katharine Hepburn and Vivien Leigh are among those named by Bowers, now 88. . . . Younger readers—at least those raised in the Internet and TMZ age—may find nearly as shocking the fact that the stories were squelched by studio publicists and remained largely under wraps back in the day.”—Chicago Tribune

“Connoisseurs of lurid tell-alls and the golden age of Hollywood will almost certainly be entranced by Full Service.”—The Atlantic Wire

“The Scotty I knew was a guy who always seemed to be enjoying his life working morning, noon and night, with never a gripe; always with a smile to greet you, and never with an axe to grind. After a lifetime in Hollywood, that’s a remarkable feat and its own kind of Zen.”—David Patrick Columbia, New York Social Diary

"They said he'd never talk — but at long last, the legendary Scotty Bowers has told his story, with all the honesty, compassion and insight that made him a confidant of movie stars, directors, billionaires, and politicians. Bowers knew Hollywood like no one else, invited behind closed doors to observe firsthand the true stories of America's dream factory. This is juicy, juicy stuff—but just as importantly, it's a seminal chapter of American popular culture that gives us a richer understanding of the people, times, and culture of Hollywood's Golden Age."—William J. Mann, author of Kate: The Woman Who Was Hepburn

"A picaresque romp that unabashedly uncovers long-hidden sexual scandals during Hollywood's golden years."—John Rechy, author of City of Night

“Delicious with every salacious detail . . . The photographs alone are worth the price of admission.”—Huffington Post

“Controversial . . . vivid . . . As well as a titillating catalogue of sexual intrigue, the book is designed to expose of the hypocrisy and fear that swirled beneath the industry's on-screen glamour and crafted wholesomeness. . . . [Bowers] dramatically describes the climate of fear in an era when he worked as a bartender at Hollywood parties while the LAPD vice squad were prowling the hills in their patrol cars looking for parties and opportunities to arrest the participants.”—The Guardian (UK)

“After five years maintaining that sex secrets of Tinseltown’s elite, at the age of 88, Bowers is revealing all in a sensational new memoir.”—The Daily Express (UK)

“Full Service opens the doors of the closeted, X-rated underworld of old Hollywood through three decades.”—The Daily Mail (UK)

“[Bowers] became the Mr. Fixit for screen icons who sought out the more lurid trappings of Tinseltown during its glory days. Wild affairs, gay romps and rampant prostitution were the order of the day and Bowers was the man they turned to for their salacious entertainment.”—The Daily Mirror (UK)

“Scotty Bowers—once a beacon of discretion—finally unveils the carnal peccadillos of many of the studio era’s biggest players. . . . For impromptu beach house read-a-loud moments . . . this book is a must.”—Lambda Literary

“[If] you're one of those people who still owns a vintage princess phone, watches Mad Men obsessively, and yearns to go back to a “simpler” time when men and women exchanged witty banter in mid-Atlantic accents instead of jumping into the sack, read Bowers’ book.”—Nerve.com

“[Full Service] is about to blow the door off of the Hollywood Closet. . . . Escandalo!”—Seattle Gay Scene

“None of us are ready for what appears to be the kickass Old Hollywood memoir of 2012: Scotty Bowers’s Full Service.”—AfterElton.com

Preface

Although I’m not a shy man I have always been reticent to reveal details about what I have done, mainly to respect the privacy of those whose lives have intersected with mine. But, if the truth be told, over the years many people have told me to write about my experiences and share them with others. A few decades ago my good buddy Tennessee Williams began writing his own account of my life but before it saw the light of day I told him to destroy it. Now, as I take stock of myself in my twilight years—I’ll be eighty-nine on my next birthday—I feel compelled to share my story.

I reached this decision not long ago as I was driving east along Hollywood Boulevard. I had been to see a friend in Westwood and I was on my way to one of the two houses I own to pick up my mail. It was a perfect Southern Californian summer afternoon. The traffic wasn’t too bad and my dog, Baby, happily bounded from one side of the rear seat to the other, thrusting her nose out of the windows. We passed Mann’s Chinese Theatre, where throngs of tourists gathered in the courtyard to gaze at autographs and handprints of their favorite stars enshrined in concrete. People dressed up as characters from a multitude of blockbuster movies wafted among the crowds. Farther along the block, visitors gathered in the forecourt of the Kodak Theatre to admire the grand gallery where, once every year, the famous red carpet welcomes stars to the Academy Awards presentation. The El Capitan Theatre across the road was a riot of twinkling lights and more surging multitudes. It was just another average day in Hollywood.

Even for me, after all these years, the very name of Hollywood conjures up images of a fantastic world of make-believe. It’s a world that throbs with energy, excitement, indulgence, even decadence. This is a crazy, zany, wonderful, topsy-turvy town sandwiched between a blistering desert and the vast Pacific Ocean. It has been my home for nearly seven decades. I have enjoyed a fabulous life here ever since I put down my roots following my discharge from the U.S. Marines at the end of World War II. I love this place and all the people in it. The story that I am going to tell could only have happened here. This is a gathering place of lost souls, of eccentrics, of people who don’t follow the mainstream of anything.

As my car purred along Hollywood Boulevard I crossed Highland Avenue. I glanced around and realized how much things have changed since the early days. The old clanging streetcars are long gone. The shows that run in places like the Pantages Theatre are very different from what they used to be. Buildings have come and gone. The sidewalk still shimmers with inlaid terrazzo and brass stars that honor the many talented people who have worked in the film, television, radio, and music industries. Where bejeweled and fur-clad women once strolled arm in arm with tall, handsome men in tuxedos, there are now mainly tourists during the day and, after sundown, drunks, drug pushers, and the homeless. I drove on for a couple of miles. The crowds thinned out until the sidewalks were empty. When I reached Van Ness Avenue I pulled over. As Baby’s face appeared over my shoulder she licked my ear. She was curious. Why had we stopped? Her wagging tail thudded against the seat behind me. How could I explain it to her? I tugged at her muzzle and stared at the intersection, now the site of major construction work.

A new fire station for the Los Angeles Fire Department was rising there. Like a floodgate suddenly opening, a million memories enveloped me. This very spot, this place where cranes, concrete mixers, and metal scaffolding now stand, is where it all began for me. A little gas station once occupied that corner. Shortly after I first got here I worked there as a young pump attendant. But it didn’t take me long to learn to do more than just pump gas. Through a series of extraordinary incidents I became enmeshed in a wild world of sexual intrigue the likes of which few people can even begin to imagine.

Over the years more Hollywood personalities secretly congregated at that little gas station than anywhere else in town. It was a scene that saw as much furious action as the busiest studio back lot. The place became a magnet for those in quest of carnal thrills and escapism of every kind. A cavalcade of movie stars and others were attracted to the station like the proverbial moth to a flame. I became the go-to guy in town for arranging whatever people desired. And everybody’s needs were met. Whatever folks wanted, I had it. I could make all their fantasies come true. No matter how outrageous or offbeat people’s tastes, I was the one who knew how to get them exactly what they were after. Straight, gay, or bi; male or female; young or old—I had something for everyone. The vice squad and the press were constantly lurking on the periphery, eagerly waiting to pounce. But I always managed to elude them.

The gas station was the portal that eventually took me into an exclusive world where high-class sex was everything. I’ve had many occupations during my life but, to be honest, what really drove me was a desire to keep people happy. And the way I did that was through sex. Arranging sexual liaisons for folks from all walks of life became my raison d’tre. When I first arrived here the stars were owned by the studios, which were heavily invested in them.

Naturally, they needed to protect their investments. But people still wanted to have sex. And I was there to help them get it. Also, you have to remember that there were lots of gay people working at the studios at the time. Those behind the camera could be more open in their private lives but the actors and major directors and producers had “morals” clauses in their contracts, which they would have violated by being openly known as gay or bisexual.

Eventually I changed jobs. I moved on from the gas station to become one of the busiest bartenders in Los Angeles. In that capacity I gained access to the inner sanctums of Hollywood royalty. I moved in the highest of circles. Nothing was out of bounds for me. Those were amazing, intoxicating days, wildly erotic and carefree. Such a time can never come again. The lusty activities and vagabond lifestyle we once enjoyed in this town were unique to our time.

As I sat in the car that summer afternoon with Baby I became aware of the passing of an incalculable number of years. I felt myself reminiscing about dear and wonderful friends, all long departed. Oh, Kate, Spence, Judy, Tyrone, George, Cary, Rita, Charles, Randolph, Edith, Vivien, I thought . . . where are you all now? Do you look down at me from wherever you are and chuckle as you watch me mulling over how our lives intersected? What should I make of all those incredible adventures we enjoyed together? What do you beautiful souls think of the nostalgia now welling up within me? Am I resurrecting moments from yesterday simply because I want to dust them off and discard them or because I want to burnish them more brightly and hold on to them more endearingly?

Baby licked my ear again and I came out of my reverie. I reminded myself that there weren’t only movie stars in my past. There were politicians, judges, bankers, doctors, industrialists, newspaper columnists, even kings and queens. Not all were rich and famous. There were also plain, regular men and women whose names I shall never be able to recall. But I knew them all. Intimately.

I started the car and drove off. I realized that wherever I look, the suburbs, the boulevards, the side streets, the studios, the nightclubs, the fancy homes in the hills, there is a sliver of my past in all of it. There is so much to recall. There are apparitions and memories of myself everywhere. My mind lazily ambled through endless mental files containing images of glamorous parties, of wild poolside orgies, of weekends in fancy hotels, of studio dressing rooms, of crowded sound stages, of dark places where bodies collided with electrifying vigor, of ghostly gatherings of gorgeous women and virile young men, of a magnificent variety of passionate sex of every kind.

Frankly, I knew Hollywood like no one else knew it.

Nothing left out and Plenty of Surprises
By Jeff Hanna
Somehow I was surprised that this was so well-written (although Scotty Bowers collaborated with Emmy Award-winning writer and documentary film director Lionel Friedberg). Bowers seems like a nice, charming guy with boundless energy, curiosity and a great appetite for life who seems to have never had the slightest hang-up about sex. Of course having killer good looks and body didn't hurt. An interesting subtext about how witnessing real horror at Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima increased his desire to live life to its fullest after the war.
The book is overflowing with juicy, bizarre, often very surprising gossip which can be hilariously funny, sometimes sad, and frequently over-the-top salacious. All of the in-your-face sexuality and pathos is interesting because it involves people who were so idealized at the time - and some still are. Plenty of rumors are confirmed and legends shattered - hence the anger and disbelief of so many reviewers here. This goes well beyond "Hollywood Babylon" in explicitness and naming names. A real page-turner. Definitely not a re-hash of tired, familiar stories or questionable speculation; Scotty knew and saw them all up close and decided his fascinating tale was worth sharing, now that most of the denizens of old Hollywood are gone. The book's tone is never mean-spirited.
Gore Vidal calls the book startling and vouches for Scotty's veracity.
For those with delicate sensibilities: approach with caution. Some readers will be offended by "distasteful" and unflattering details about favorite celebrities, but if you're going to tell this kind of story nowadays, you might as well go ALL the way, and Scotty does!
A Vanity Fair writer and award-winning documentary film-maker has signed a deal to make a documentary about Scotty. Shortly after "Full Service" was published, a writer for L.A Weekly called Raymond Burr's life-partner, Robert Benevides - whom Scotty claimed to have set up with Burr - and Benevides confirmed as true everything that Bowers said about him and Burr. Benevides replied: "Scotty Bowers is the most honest person I've known, with the best memory for names and places I've ever seen. If he tells you that something happened to somebody, then that's the way it was." He said the idea that Scotty makes up stories is "laughable."

As one reviewer said, you'll never look at Turner Classic Movies quite the same.
(By the way, I don't know or have any connection at all with Scotty Bowers or the publisher.)
Recommended.

Good ol' Scotty reminds me of what the elder priest ...
By bookreader
Where do I begin. When I bought this book I really wanted to take the man at his word....but after reading it , it was evident it was a cross between Forest Gump meets Penthouse forum type of book. Good ol' Scotty reminds me of what the elder priest said to the younger one in the movie Exorcist , when he warned him "The demon will mix truth with lies in order to confuse us" . Sure some of what Scotty said could have happened but it gets ridiculously laughable how much BS most of it is. Let's see, he claims in 1964 when Brian Epstein the Beatles manager had booked a room at the Beverly Hills hotel that he changed his mind because female fans had already found out what hotel they were staying at so he needed a more secretive location. As soon as the plane landed he made a call. Did he call a travel agent? Professional concierge? Nope he called ex gas pumper, part time bartender, occasional pool digger Scotty Bowers to arrange him a safe place. On to another tale. He claims he wore a uniform at his job at the gas station and one time after a night of 'tricking' he was worn out and decided to take a nap in the park on the way to work , we can assume while in uniform. While sleeping he wakes up to find a man satisfying his and I quote 'throbbing member' neither scotty or the man feel awkward about this and they become 'fast friends' . Now who in their right mind no matter what sexual orientation they are, would go up to an ex-marine, in a gas station uniform and decide to run their hands in his pants while sleeping? well who would that didn't have a death wish? Now he also mentions that he would 'happily' (that word get's used so much it's clear a thesaurus wasn't on the editing table) get young women for Errol Flynn. Errol had taken him out to dinner and asked him this favor. After all we all know Errol Flynn had trouble getting women, so he needed the help of a gas attendant to hook him up. Tyrone Power was another 'good friend', so was Spencer Tracy, Laurence Olivier, British Royalty, George Cukor, Tennessee Williams, Rock Hudson, Cary Grant , a Nevada Judge, the owners of The Beverly Hills Hotel, and yet with all these connections and 'great friends ' he never managed to get a job that paid more than probably minimum wage.

Then there's Katherine Hepburn. He claims that over the course of 50 years he got her 150 women for sex. Well let's see ol' Scotty you started hustling in 1946 so 50 years later would be 1996, hmmm. Katherine Hepburn was born in 1907 so if you still were getting her sex partners until she was 89 in 1996 then all I can say is those girls earned their money. He claims that even up until 1984 he would still sell himself to some queens. Now let's see Scotty was born in 1923 and in 1984 he'd be 61. Yup, I can think of nobody a wealthy old gay man would rather buy sex from than someone who is 61 and is an aging roofers helper, odd jobs handy man , and weekend bartender.

He also describes his sex as always great, never had ED, no mention of STD's , had a big one, could go all night and even went as far as to say he was always proud of his 'loads'. In essence Scotty is entertaining but full of it. He's the guy you get stuck sitting next to on a greyhound bus that is funny and makes the time go by, not because he's got great tales but because he's so full of it you can't help but laugh and he makes the trip go faster.

Something for Everyone
By John Erman
Scotty worked for me for years. He tended bar, he pruned trees, and he packed us up when we moved away from Los Angeles. This book was like a visit with an old friend. But, Scotty was forever youthful, forever enthusiastic, and a nice guy. This comes through in the book, which is amazing, because some of his stories will raise your eyebrows. He describes life in Hollywood as it will never be again. I was happy to read at the conclusion that his current life is a happy one. He deserves it. And, if you choose to read this eminently readable book, I think you'll have a good time. I did.

Public Administration Theory Primer (Essentials of Public Policy and Administration Series.), by Kevin B Smith, H George Frederickson, H.

In the past thirty years, public administration has developed more systematic patterns of inquiry about the substance of public organization behavior, public management, and public policy implementation. This book explores how the science and art of policy administration is definable, describable, replicable, and cumulative. Frederickson and Smith describe several theories and analytical approaches that contribute to what we know about policy administration. This book asks: Which theories or approaches are the most promising, the most influential? Which are the most important now and likely to be the most important in the future? The purpose of this effort is to set out a detailed description of key theories in contemporary public administration and thus improve the reliability of our knowledge and our understanding of public administration.

Confidence Shaken

Writing a primer of public administration theory isn't an easy task since there is some question whether there can be such theory. Frederickson and Smith give the project a fair effort looking at public administration through a number of theoretical lenses.

The substance and arguments of the chapters tend to go down hill after the first four. Chapter five on institutionalism is almost impenetrable and hardly the stuff of a primer. Then the reader's confidence in the authors' depth of knowledge is shaken where, amid a weak reading of the human relations literature and that of managerial humanism, the authors devote two paragraphs on Weber including the following on page 102:

"One important and different approach to management theory in the evolution of public administraion is the sociology of Max Weber, who founded the study of large-scale complex organizations he labeled bureaucracy. Although he did his work in the 1930s and 1940s . . . ."

One may surely question whether Weber saw himself creating an "important and different approach to management," but if he did it in the 30s and 40s, he did it from the grave. Anyone who knows anything about Weber knows that he did his greatest work at the turn of the 20th century and was dead by 1920. Not only are the authors wrong about when Weber lived, but their brief discussion of Weber makes little sense amidst an attempt at setting out human relations theory, unless it is suppose to be an illustration of McGregor's Theory X, which is introduced on the previous page. Also disturbing is the authors' inability to distinguish between the human relations perspective and that of organizational humanists. While there are several good works in the public administration literature addressing the field of organization behavior, the management-relevant topics of this field get very fractured treatment throughout the book.

Readers, especially teachers, should read this book with a critical eye to both what is said and what is left out.

Impenetrable is right!
By KD
I read this book for a public administration graduate class. I do not have a background in political science, so perhaps the book was more difficult for me than for others. The previous reviewer used the word "impenetrable." I found about half the chapters were exceedingly difficult for me to follow and several really were impenetrable. I did, however, learn quite a bit from it, and I even will keep the book for reference, at least for a little while. It by no means is light reading, however.

I don't know how the authors split up the writing of the book, but some chapters are written following a clear outline, and I found those to be the easiest for me to follow. The other chapters were more prone to rambling, and two in particular rambled seemingly directionless for most of the chapter, providing little material for me to grasp until the very last few pages of the chapter, where all the important information on the theory was to be found.

Reading this book was not my choice, and not having a background in the subject, I am not one to say if there's anything better. But seriously...there's got to be something better! I'm just happy we had the opportunity to discuss these theories in class with the help of other materials. That was what made the book useful for me.

Excellent reference to summarize PA Theories
By Malcolm K. Oliver
This is an excellent text for any Public Administration theory course, or for a student preparing for comp. exams. This text is helpful because it groups various theories of PA into coherent topics, which brings some order to this wide ranging and far flung literature. This text is somewhere between a masters and PhD level text, so for those in need of a text that can give you good grasp of the various theories underlying PA, then this text is extremely helpful. For those that are just trying to get through the MPA to get that job or to move up, you probably don't need this text.

From Publishers Weekly
This fine, bleak look at Orange County, Calif., owes more to 1984 and A Clockwork Orange than to the usual SF scenario. By 2067, the land between L.A. and San Diego County is a maze of gigantic shopping malls, "condomundos" and huge aerospace facilities, all joined by soaring, multilevel "autopias" that have paved over practically everything. Brushfire wars and famines are widespread, nuclear terror reigns and the business of America is weaponry. The narrative concerns young Jim McPherson's attempts to be a poet and his stabs at revolutionary action. His father is trying to make a tactical, nonnuclear missile that will end war, and Jim's best friends (drug-dealer Sandy, nightsurfer Tashi, emergency medic Abe) seek to avoidburnout and ennui. Some thingscorporate greed, Pentagon politicshaven't changed much. Improvements have been made (cars run on electronic tracking), and some changes are acidly funny: most people watch multiple video images of their love-making. Interspersed in the story are elegiac views of the history of "OC" and its possible grim future. Robinson (Planet on the Table, The Memory of Whiteness) offers a stark cautionary tale with a glimmer of hope at the end.

A Thoughtful Potrait of Suburbia Gone Riot
By Gerald J. Nora
To judge from some of the other reviews of this book, many read The Gold Coast expecting more of Robinson's excellent adventure-SF, like the magnificent Mars Trilogy or Antarctica. Those expectations are understandable but do this great book a disservice.
The setting is Orange County in the middle of the 21st Century, with the USSR and the Cold War alive and well. Orange County has largely disappeared into a maze of highways and strip malls. The protagonist, Jim, is a twenty-something still dependent on his parents, who dabbles in Zen, post-modern poetry, works at an insurance agency and teaches night classes at a local community college. He cannot concentrate on anything for too long and tends to see other people as characters in a novel who come and go at random: when Jim's dad taught him about engine mechanics, Jim is interested and sees how the thermodynamics involved can be a metaphor for society, but then he promptly forgets it. When he visits his uncle Tom in a massive retirement home, he is fascinated by the lonely old man's storys of how Orange County used to be and resolves to spend more time with him, but as soon as the visit ends, he gets the heeby-jeebies about the retirement complex and ignores his uncle until he's obligated to visit again. He is in a relationship showing signs of becoming serious, but betrays his girlfriend for a random hook-up with a girl at a party. When Jim's friends tell him that his ex's heart was broken by the betray, he is surprised and rather indifferent.
Eventually Jim realizes how hollow he is and his first attempt to find meaning is to get involved with some saboteurs trying to end America's huge military-industrial complex. Eventually, we see him grow up and develop a mature relationship with an art teacher, and even become reconciled with his parents. He also finds his voice as a history writer who seeks to find out what Orange County used to be like, and how it came to be a suburban nightmare.
Jim is the main character, but Robinson also looks at Jim's parents, friends, and intersperses the fiction with prose meditations on the stages of Orange County's history. The result is a rich journey to a world that is hauntingly like our own. For instance, nobody has a boyfriend or girlfriend, they have "allies", much like the modern term "partner", and while the Cold War may be dead in our world, Robinson does a good job of making our consumer culture take a look in the mirror.
Many people talked about "American Beauty"'s indictment of American suburbia, but ten years before that movie came out, Robinson created a much better examination of suburban culture, without the blatant polemics of American Beauty.
It's different from much of Robinson's other work, but it still has his unique style and is well worth your time.

Good sci-fi, but not by KSR's standards
By Amazon Customer
This book continues KSR's musings on one of his favorite places, Orange County, California. The main protagonist, Jim, is a twenty- or thirty-something in search of a cause. In fact he's a bit of a Gen-Xer. The setting of an OC thoroughly covered in concrete and highway forces Jim to search for deeper meaning, which he does via reading history, digging up parking lots, writing poetry, and "lidding" psychotropic drugs with his pals. Oh yeah, he also plays around with various women, none of them really compelling his (or our) interest. In short, he's a rather self-centered idealist (?) who gets so caught up in his own world, he cares less than he should about his family and friends. Not an uncommon phenomenon, particularly among Gen-Xers, one might claim.
In any case, the plot thickens as Jim gets involved in the underworld of anti-military-industrial complex sabotage. We realize some personal cataclysm's inevitable, as Jim's own father develops high-precision munitions a la the Strategic Defense Initiative (the book was written in the 1980s). We follow Jim, his dad, and Jim's pals as they work, play, and blow up various weapons plants. The plot ends with something of an epiphany for Jim - a rather postmodern one. Postmodern, because it leaves that empty, "existential" or "what does it all mean" feeling in the reader that people who chronically wear black, smoke cigarettes, and inhabit coffeehouses so like to affect. We hope that Jim makes a turn for the better.
Be that as it may, there are more than a few telling passages that leave their impression. KSR has developed the skill of capturing the moment - and the observer's reflections thereon - beyond the level of most modern writers. Those individual versus the world (or individual-in-the-world) moments are rather "existential" in the original, phenomenological sense of the word (not the coffeehouse sense), and are KSR's real contribution to fiction. A case in point is when one of Jim's friends, a surfer, undertakes his sport at nighttime. You'll have to read the passage for yourself to believe how incredibly well it distills the narrator's experience.
I admit to some disappointment after the great expectations raised by the previous volume in the trilogy, The Wild Shore. In sum, Gold Coast is strong work compared to most sci-fi, but weak for KSR.

Finding a Lever
By Patrick Shepherd
This book does not have any big bangs or soaring flights of imagination, instead it is a very straight forward linear extrapolation of trends present in the mid-eighties involving the military-industrial complex and the urbanization of America. Both trends have had some deviations from that straight line in the years since this was written, but that does not invalidate the main focus of this book, that of not only how an individual can make a difference in the world around him, but why he should try to make that difference.
Jim, the prime protagonist, is a much conflicted individual, who really has not found out what he really believes is right or what he should do with his life. Involved in a seemingly endless round of parties with his friends, having no serious commitment to his lady friend, holding two desultory part-time jobs that he has no enthusiasm for, considering himself to be a writer with a strong interest in the history of Orange County but without any finished product he thinks is good, and still partially dependent on his parents for support, he is a prime target for suggestion and peer pressure to define his actions. When one of his friends suggests that he should actually do something to change the domination of the country by the military-industrial complex, he jumps at the chance, and soon finds himself involved in industrial sabotage. His father, in the meantime, is also fighting the same war, but from a completely different perspective of an engineer actively employed by that same complex, trying to find a technical solution to the MAD arms-race.
Along the way to Jim finding his own resolution to his life, we are treated to historical snapshots of Orange County from its very early settling by native Americans to the coming of the Spanish, to its flowering as an agricultural paradise, to its great industrial expansion during and after World War II, and finally to the condition depicted at the time of this book, as an almost totally asphalt covered warren of apartments, malls, offices, and neon lighting that has forgotten its historical and ecological heritage. These sections, viewed separately from the rest of the book, form something of an extended prose poem, with a very heavy 'back-to-nature' message, that intertwine with Jim's search for meaning in his life, and provide a strong under-current to the novel's action.
The opening of this book is very rough, with too many characters introduced too briefly, with trivial and sometimes outdated dialogue, and without any apparent clear focus or direction. It is not till almost halfway through the book that it settles down and starts showing depth and direction. From this point on, the novel becomes much better, as the reader becomes interested in the characters and moral dilemma's they and their world face.
This is not KSR's best novel. The book wanders for too long before finding its legs, and the ecological sub-theme is sometimes too strident, the bashing of capitalism inadequately supported. But it has something to say about both our current industrial society and about the everyday individual's place in that society, about making a difference, about having commitments and moral integrity, about both the 'how' and the 'why' a life should be lived.

The Seeress of Kell: The Malloreon, Book 5, by David Eddings

Now in the final stages of their quest for his son, Garion and his companions travel to Kell to consult the only undamaged copy of the Malloreon Gospels. For centuries the Seers have guarded this book from the Grolims and even had their wizards put a curse of blindness on any Grolim who tried to enter Kell. So, as proclaimed in Guardians of the West, Belgarion the Godslayer sets out with those who must join him: the Eternal Man, the Guide, the Man with Two Lives, the Bearer of the Orb and the Silent Man, and the rest of his companions to The Place Which Is No More to make the final choice - darkness or light. But Zandramas the Sorceress will not be outdone. Though she may not enter Kell she still has young Geran and should she reach the final meeting place with him, then Garion must slay his son or the world will be no more. THUS ENDS THE EPIC STORY OF THE MALLOREON.

From Publishers Weekly
This final volume of the quintet begun with Guardians of the West finds Belgarion, the Child of Light, racing to his cataclysmic and long-prophesied meeting with Zandramas, Child of the Dark, which will determine the future of the world. His small band--consisting of, among others, his wife, Ce'Nedra; members of his shape-changing family; and his former enemy, Zakath, Emperor of Mallorea--is joined by Cyradis, the blind seeress of Kell, who is foreordained to decide which will win, the forces of Light or those of Dark. From the mysterious city of Kell they are directed to Perivor, bastion of chivalry, where they will learn the location of the meeting place, Korim, the Place Which Is No More. After various adventures and encounters with Zandramas's agents, the final battle of wills is joined, with Belgarion becoming privy to astonishing revelations about some of his companions. This volume is not for a newcomer to Eddings's series; while it ties up loose ends and brings the hero and his friends to a happy conclusion, the meeting that the previous four books have been foreshadowing is anticlimatic.

From Kirkus Reviews
Fifth and final chunk of Eddings's enormous Good vs. Evil fantasy (most recently Sorceress of Darshiva, 1989). Finally, then, we have reached the showdown in the Place Which is No More. Cyradis, the blind title character, must choose between the Light (Garion's candidate, Eriond the godlike) and the Dark (the evil sorceress Zandramas has selected Geran, Garion's young son, as her representative). Naturally, the fate of the entire universe is at stake. The role of the good guys is to counter and neutralize the plots and deceptions of Zandramas, so that Cyriadis can make an honest choice. No prizes for guessing which she chooses. Various Gods, Orbs, dragons, and whatnots embroider the proceedings; Eddings's usual jolly banter enlivens the dialogue; yet the showdown--promised through five long, long novels--amounts to nothing much. Fans and nonfans alike will rejoice that the series is concluded at last. -- Copyright 1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

From the Publisher
David Eddings [The Belgariad series] -- This is like Bonanza, or like I Love Lucy. There will be other fantasy series, but there can never be another that's so seminal, that so captures the essence of fantasy. Big Dave and Little Leigh grow their heroes from the ground up, and they grow the best.

By Christopher Spera
The conclusion of both the Belgariad and the Mallorean is by far the culmination of one of the best fantasy series I've ever read. If you like high fantasy, then you must read both of these 5 book series.

Great Characters
By Jonathan Roach
This was a very entertaining book, the characters were great, and it was a fast paced read. My only complaint is that I felt the main plot suffered a minor breakdown by the end of this book. The plot in the first series, the Belgariad, was better. Overall the Mallorean and the climactic chapters in The Seeress of Kell were a great read.

Excellent book.A bit soiled on some pages but I suppose that's to be expected with a used auto repair manual.Very good pictures and detailed instructions. It arrived quickly. Overall I'm satisfied with my purchase.

not bentleys best effort
By Osorio Batres Silvia Rebeca
IT is a very good manual but not up to the calibre of bentleys other manuals. Some things are hardly covered at all for example the carburetor system or scirocco wiring for different models.

Only the best

Bentley is the best for VWs. Has it all and still relatively easy to read and follow steps. Could have more and clearer pictures for us who need visuals.
