Dear ANONYMOUS Reader from Sedona: I'm sorry to say, but you're all wrong. You obviously did not read Stoltz's "Turning Obstacles into Opportunities". You cannot appreciate the value of the metaphor when you don't know anything about the extensive investigation and thorough scientific research behind it. That's a stupid as thinking you can learn to drive by reading the operators manual of a car. The metaphor is not the method itself.
The book is well worth reading AFTER reading "Turning Obstacles into Opportunities".

One glaring flaw to a great resource

The Cthulhu Mythos Encyclopedia is a great resource for fans of the Cthulhu Mythos, fans of the Call of Cthulhu RPG, fans of weird fiction, and fans of cosmic horror. There is a great amount of detail in the book on creatures, gods, and characters in the mythos. A listed bibliography and listed stories for each entry is great and helps expand a reader's suggested reading for the genre.

The book itself is a dense tome, and often reads like an academic work with no illustrations as well as keeping a large amount of entries down to a paragraph. There is an exceptional amount of entries, a great many are not works of Lovecraft himself but of other authors.

The biggest issue with this book is a lack of a Table of Contents, an index, or any way to find a particular entry quickly. For a dense 400 page book, this is a major hindrance and one that can't be overlooked.

This is a necessary resource for anyone serious about the Cthulhu Mythos. Whether you are a writer, gamer or an enthusiast of HP Lovecraft and other horrors, this book is highly recommended. The information in this book is great for creating plot hooks, or what stories to search for to learn more about a specific topic for further exploration.

Need to find out more about Ubbo-Sathla to write a time travel story about wizards?
Look up Ubbo-Sathla, find out that Clark Ashton Smith wrote Ubbo-Sathla, and that god is mentioned in the Book of Eibon. You'll find an appendices about the Necronomicon.
More importantly Dan Harms included a guide on how to handle and use others intellectual property from a non-legalistic standpoint, but more from a standpoint of being ethically creative while respecting to the continuity.

Somewhere in storage I have the second edition of this book, but I have a digital copy on my iPhone, laptop and desktop computer. For my podcast I find this to be a great resource.
Unfortunately I have occasionally ran across instances where Mr. Harms references a story that is no longer in print and hard to find(even after contacting the author or the story). That would be my only gripe. Otherwise this is wonderful, also I am happy that it is a book that covers literature as well as RPG source material due to the fact that the two have become intertwined in the last 30+ years. I am also thankful that the book doesn't rely on any goofy lovecraftian tricks, spooky typefaces or faux-aged paper. It's nice to have some people take this space monster business seriously.

Great CoC Mythos reference

It's a reference book on Cthulu Mythos. The Questions on the Amazon rating screen are for a novel or biography and completely irrelevant to a reference work. It's funny. They ask the same questions on a Roll Players Guide book. If you play CoC or just want to understand the world of H.P. Lovecraft and his collegues, this will help. It even has some explanations of how successive authors have changed or added to the mythos.

THE AMERICAN SOCIAL HISTORY PROJECT/CENTER FOR MEDIA AND LEARNING aims to revitalize interest in history by challenging the traditional ways that people learn about the past. Founded in 1981 by the late Herbert Gutman and Stephen Brier and based at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York, ASHP/CML produces award-winning print, visual, and multimedia materials about the working men and women whose actions and beliefs shaped American history. Also with Bedford/St. Martin's, they have published History Matters: A Student Guide to U.S. History Online, based on their popular Web resource of the same name.

CHRISTOPHER CLARK, professor of history at the University of Connecticut, received the Frederick Jackson Turner Award from the Organization of American Historians for The Roots of Rural Capitalism: Western Massachusetts, 1780-1860 (1990). His other publications include The Communitarian Moment: The Radical Challenge of the Northampton Association (1995) and Social Change in America: From the Revolution through the Civil War (2006), together with articles on rural history and the social roots of American economic development. He has also been the co-recipient of the Cadbury Schweppes Prize for innovative teaching in the humanities.

NANCY A. HEWITT is Professor II of history and women's and gender studies at Rutgers University. She has received many awards and prizes, including the Jerome T. Krivanek Distinguished Teaching Award and the Julia Cherry Spruill Book Prize as well as fellowships from the NEH, the Mellon Foundation, and the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Her publications include Women's Activism and Social Change: Rochester, New York, 1822-1872 (1984); Visible Women: New Essays on American Activism, co-edited with Suzanne Lebsock (1993); and Southern Discomfort: Women's Activism in Tampa, Florida, 1880s-1920s (2001). ROY ROSENZWEIG is Mark and Barbara Fried Professor of History & New Media at George Mason University, where he also heads the Center on History and New Media (http://chnm.gmu.edu). NELSON LICHTENSTEIN is professor of history at the University of California, Santa Barbara where he directs the Center for the Study of Work, Labor and Democracy. He is the author of Labor's War at Home: the CIO in World War II (1982, 2003); Walter Reuther: the Most Dangerous Man in Detroit (1997); and State of the Union: A Century of American Labor (2002), which won the Philip Taft Prize in Labor History. He has held fellowships from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundations. His edited books include Industrial Democracy in America: the Ambiguous Promise (1993); Wal-Mart: The Face of Twenty-First-Century Capitalism (2006); American Capitalism: Social Thought and Political Economy in the Twentieth Century (2006); and Major Problems in the History of American Workers (2003).

JOSHUA BROWN, Visual Editor, is the executive director of the American Social History Project/Center for Media and Learning and professor of history at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He was visual editor of the first edition of Who Built America? and also co-authored the accompanying CD-ROMs and video documentary series. A Great History Book!

This is about as close as a textbook can get to Howard Zinn's People's History of the U.S. It is a two-part book that really delves into the role of the people in creating modern America. It speaks volumes about women and people of color. I thought this was a very interesting, fun, and intersectional U.S. history text.

Beautiful but Terrifying!

If you've ever read a series, like I'm sure most have. Usually, you think, oh well it's the second. There's no way it could be better than the first. Then you start to read and the magic that was In the first, still resides in the heart of this story.

Elena the Steel Maiden is on a mission to save Jon. But the Black Magic has already poisoned a man, that she loved. After realizing she couldn't save him at that moment. She had only one choice but to go back to the pit. But there is no good news, there's only another dangerous journey. She has to go to Witchdom and get some help. With a few others following, helping her.

There's a part in the book where Elena is describing a power she's never seen before, Beautiful but Terrifying. This how I feel. This is nail biting, heart pumping, beautiful and terrifying. It's a brilliant fantasy read and I love it.

I loved Elena, she is confident, even when those think she is weak. She fights and isn’t afraid to die. She knows that so many lives count on her and she’ll do anything to keep going. There are a ton of new characters in this one. Richardson’s writing makes it easy to love these characters and really hate the evil ones.

The Journey that Elena goes on is so nerve wracking. I seriously could not put this book down. It’s one of those stories, that you don’t want to be over but you have to absolutely see what happens next.

Really enjoyed this book...

I'm glad I purchased this book. Many mysteries of the story started to unfold and you definitely learn a lot more about the characters. I love Elena's determination even though their situation seems bleak and hopeless at times. I can hardly wait for the new book in the series!

Things Are Getting Good!

Oh, things are getting good. The previous book ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, and this one picked right back up and started off with a bang. I found myself starting to like Elena more. She's a tough little thing and I think she found a purpose in her life that really had me, as the reader, rooting for her.

The author did try to isolate her some, as she's a witch and those helping her are humans, but there wasn't much proven that they didn't like her other than Elena's own uncertain thoughts. The journey to the land of the witches wasn't as drawn out as I suspected and there was plenty of adventure along the way. I really enjoyed the imaginations that went into the familiars and other evils in the forests.
Arriving at the palace was like the story had been turned on it's head. Suddenly, there were new obstacles in Elena's way. I actually really liked where the story was headed once she found the palace. She really got to know her powers a bit better, and a bit of the political intrigue that was going on. I don't want to give too much away, but the scandal had me glued to those pages. I had to find out what would happen!

The beginning definitely didn't prepare me for the ending, and I think that's why I can't resist five stars. The obstacles in the way were entertaining, and the characters were becoming more interesting and the pacing kept me on my toes. I look forward to the next book in the series!

A great geometry book for Olympiad training!

Ross Honsberger presents the articles of modern euclidean geometric properties in a way that is easy to follow and understand. The method of proofs and development of ideas illustrate different solving strategies which is valuable for self-studying young students. With the help of simple diagrams, I found no difficulties in understanding the articles. Problems are well-graded with solutions are well-presented at the back. A MUST-READ book for students participating maths contest!

This smart and timely book explores the relationships between the Warumungu society of north-central Australia and their non-Aboriginal neighbors in the region of Tennant Creek. Using the concept of business, which in Aboriginal English usually refers to ritual activity, Christen discusses Aboriginal formal organizations, railroads, mining, tourism, and cultural production to establish the point that indigenous people do not live in isolation and the modern and traditional are not mutually exclusive identities. Christen is adjunct instructor in the Religious Studies Department at Arizona State University. She received an M.A. in religious studies from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and has conducted research in Australia.

Broad ethnographic snapshot - some aspects of women's life

"Aboriginal Business - Alliances in a Remote Australian Town" by Kimberly Christen (Nungarrayi).

Kimberly Christen's easy to read book provides a really important picture of many of the demands of contemporary life faced by senior Warumungu women whose country contains the town of Tennant Creek, in the Northern Territory of Australia. These aspects are largely related to interactions with the Anglo-Australian mainstream, and not of a more personal kind.

The author says "This book is about alliances. It is an ethnographic snapshot of Warumungu engagements with a range of interlocutors, where tensions and compromises, hopes and fears, negotiations and trade offs are central."

These are placed in the context of some the changes which took place as a result of the election of the Howard government, and, to a lesser extent, the more recently elected Rudd government.

The use of "business" in Aboriginal English takes in a wider range of (non-commercial) meanings than in everyday English, and includes core cultural activities.

Kimberly is focused on alliances - of which Australia's First Peoples are undoubted masters, past and present. That said, there is a lot more to be teased out about Warumungu town life than an ethnographic snapshot allows for. This work provides a very good introduction, but is not an exhaustive and detailed account typical of earlier forms of academic anthropology. That may be a good thing.

Kimberly provides a wealth of detail covering various key events in recent times (late 1990s, early 2000) as Warumungu people emerge from the changing times in the 1980s, when land rights arrived in Tennant Creek, and new Aboriginal organisations started up to provide housing, health and cultural services for people previously banned from town.

The 1980s were followed by native title determinations, negotiations with mining and railway companies, finding meaningful ways of life in town, housing associations, starting a tourist venture/cultural centre and the production of CDs of important Women's Munga Munga (Ancestral Women) songs - this CD would be a good addition to the book - and the establishment of an indigenous digital archive. Kimberly writes about these from her informed position as someone who has been part of these events.

The key events selected show the active and creative roles played by senior women in forming alliances, sharing knowledge and safe-guarding special knowledge. Kimberly leaves no doubt about the ability of these Warumungu women to be effective managers given the complex balancing acts they are regularly required to preform as part of contemporary life.

The picture provided goes some distance towards blowing away some of the negative stereotypes of indigenous people which have been used to prop up the right of non-indigenous Australian politicians to remotely control the lives of First Peoples. First Peoples have to be very capable managers, making do with scarce resources.

The work is largely written from within a women's world. Warumungu life is marked by complementary opposition - and especially so in regard to men's and women's spheres. In some ways, Kimberly's book calls for a `companion' piece detailing contemporary life from the senior men's perspective.

While Warumungu women have enjoyed considerable support as part of alliances with those with Western worldviews, the position of some of their brothers is, in many ways, much more difficult. There is some good coverage of Warumungu men's lives.

As the subtitle says, "Aboriginal business" is about Tennant Creek town life - in one of the few towns in Australia where there is a high percentage of indigenous people vis-�-vis non-indigenous people.

This small town (Pop. 3000?) is often overlooked by those looking for the fantasy romance of "The Alice". Life in Tennant contains much of great interest to anyone interested in Australian realities. There is much to learn here - and Kimberly has certainly done so.

The breadth of her writing inevitably means some parts lack detailed historical and analytical depth regarding the difficult passage of Warumungu (and related) people from the 'simple enjoyment' of their living countries to present times.

The campaign to obtain a renal dialysis unit for indigenous people in Tennant Creek (as opposed to having to relocate 500 km to Alice Springs) is one example of a recent event which was passed over lightly. But there is much else covered.

There are many more stories yet to be told about Warumungu life and they can't all be told by one author in one book. While we can look forward to the days when Warumungu women themselves are authoring texts as well as songs, dances and paintings.

"Aboriginal Business" fills an important gap. It provides a sound introduction for anyone seeking to improve their understanding of the engagement of Warumungu women with some aspects of contemporary life. It can usefully be added to the earlier "Daughters of the Dreaming" by Australian anthropologist Diane Bell.

During the 20th century, of the million ounces produced by Nobles Nob gold mine - on the outskirts of Tennant Creek and firmly located in Warumungu Wirnkarra (Dreaming) country - Warumungu people received not a cent of royalties, and will inherit an enormous open-cut hole in the ground.

"Aboriginal Business" helps to provide a glimpse into the lives of people who will be, no doubt, far removed from the home places of many of the book's readers. Given the ongoing struggle for Australia's First Peoples to obtain decent living conditions from those who control Australia's wealth, that has to be a good thing.
