Homosexuality in Modern France (Studies in the History of Sexuality), by Jeffrey Merrick, Bryant T. Ragan

This volume explores the realities and representations of same-sex sexuality in France in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries, the period that witnessed the emergence of "homosexuality" in the modern sense of the word. Based on archival research and textual analysis, the articles examine the development of homosexual subcultures and illustrate the ways in which philosophes, pamphleteers, police, novelists, scientists, and politicians conceptualized same-sex relations and connected them with more general concerns about order and disorder. The contributors--Elizabeth Colwill, Michael David Sibalis, Victoria Thompson, William Peniston, Vernon Rosario II, Francesca Canade-Sautman, Martha Hanna, Robert A. Nye, and the editors Bryant T. Ragan, Jr. and Jeffrey Merrick--use the methods of intellectual and cultural history, the history of science, literary studies, legal and social history, and microhistory. This collection shows how the subject of homosexuality is related to important topics in French history: the Enlightenment, the revolutionary tradition, social discipline, positivism, elite and popular culture, nationalism, feminism, and the construction of identity.

Given the role of gays and lesbians in modern French culture and the work of French scholars on the history of sexuality, this collection fills an important gap in the literature and represents the first attempt in any language to explore this subject over three centuries from a variety of perspectives.

Review

"This book and others like it in series such as Oxford University Press' Studies in the History of Sexuality, are blowing the bounds of scholarship wide open."--Lambda Book Report

"...highly readable collection of lucid and useful essays...Homosexuality in Modern France should probably be regarded as the book in which gay and lesbian studies in modern French history "come of age" and confidently display their range, depth, and solidity."--The Committee on Gay and Lesbian History

"...This book is the best and most accessible effort yet to tell many stories about both men and women that are central to understanding the relationship between homosexuality and politics."--American Historical Review

"With this volume, Merrick and Ragan have provided students of early modern gender and sexuality a well-selected and well-organized collection of translated documents relating to male and female sodomy and homosexuality from the sixteenth through the eighteenth century in France.... The volume will be immensely useful not only for students of early modern France who do not know enough French to read the sources, but also for scholars who do no have access to archival sources that do not exist in modern editions.... The collection then is ideal for those beginning their study of early modern sexualities as well as for those seeking sources and source material for more advanced study and research in the area."--Sixteenth Century Journal

From the Back Cover
Research in the Field of Gay and Lesbian Studies has exploded in recent years, but the books published to date focus more on literary than historical issues, and concentrate more on the United States and Great Britain than the rest of the world. Given the role of gays and lesbians in modern French culture, not to mention the importance of the work of French scholars on the history of sexuality, France has been underrepresented in recent publications on both sides of the Atlantic. This exciting collection is the first attempt in any language to explore this subject over three centuries from a variety of perspectives. Based on archival research textual analysis, Homosexuality in Modern France examines the realities and representations of same-sex sexuality in France in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries, the period that witnessed the emergence of "homosexuality" in the modern sense of the world.

Go Find My Story, by Sandy Landry, Tyane Boye

“What caused you to say that, I wonder?” Tammy asked me.
“I reckon I didn’t know it then, but I could see the future sometimes and it seemed natural to me to just say what I seen. Peoples didn’t pay no attention to it ’til it happened, and then they got scared ’cause I was right.”
-Chapter 7, Go Find My Story
Go Find My Story is based on the true story of Effie Jones, a Christian prophetess, street evangelist, and Southern cook extraordinaire. Raised in Louisiana, Effie migrates to San Francisco in the 1940s and quickly adapts to the new "climate." Always the storyteller, she seizes each moment to share the parables of her life as she keeps her daily divine appointments in her home and on the streets of The City.

In 1976, Effie's life-long dream to get her biography "wrote down" leads her into friendship with Tammy, a college dropout whose faith is transformed as she hears the miraculous stories and witnesses the hope and love of this amazing woman. With tales of harsh child labor, traumatic loss, and a string of six husbands, Effie recounts her long road toward freedom as she struggled for decades to find her identity in the Lord and to forgive others- and herself.

In one sense a manual for the redemptive prophet, Go Find My Story tells how prophets are born- and made. Effie's God-given prophetic abilities to "see" and "hear" surface in early childhood, much to the astonishment of her family. Her visionary gifts mature as she traverses seasons of incredible hardships and personal tragedy with an ever-growing awareness of the voice and presence of the Lord watching over her. With her eyes fixed more and more on Jesus, Effie shows herself far less concerned about using her supernatural gifting than about becoming a vessel of His love to a lost and hurting world. A true spiritual mother, Effie begins to mentor her spiritual daughter Tammy "on the sly" in her stories; a true prophetess, Effie speaks words that shape Tammy's course for the next thirty years.

Priceless book
By Brother DJ
Go Find My Story is one of my favorite books of all-time. I loved this book because it showed the struggles of a budding prophetess amongst racism, poverty, abuse and despite the "hard road" she kept her faith in God and continued living for Him. Also, I loved that is was very descriptive and due to the great descriptives, it was like you were there with Effie. Effie's story is one that needs to be heard by Christian woman and especially prophetesses. The book showed how it was hard being a black woman but despite her setbacks, she moved about in life with complete boldness. Go Find My Story painted the clearest picture and the words jumped off the page into the deep recesses of your heart. It is a book that I would never lend to another, you have to purchase your own. Go Find My Story is a masterpiece and it does justice to the legacy of Effie and she is in Heaven smiling down on all who reads her story.

Engaging
By w duty
The first thing that resonated with me was the boldness of a 6 year old girl and her belief in speaking the truth. Her life as a child depicted her genuine self - the way God created her to be, and showed how people can make life tough for others when they're uncomfortable with the freedom or differences they see in others. Effie fought a good fight to hold on to who she was despite great odds. Her passion and determination to seek God and find Him because she was convinced "He alone could do something about her feelings of being cast off" is to be admired. She experienced hard times in her marriages, and they didn't work out quite the way she had hoped, even still Effie always sensed God's presence in wanting her to take His provision for sin. She learned through difficult circumstances not to judge others' motives, and described love as "pushing through and giving when you don't have it to give". Effie came to realize that "even really bad things can work out for good if God be with you." Oh yes, the years Effie spent pouring into Tyane, a young woman, not because she was a blood relative, but because God laid it on her heart to do so, how that young woman grew up and wrote the story of Effie's life, and how God's hand is guiding that young woman 30 years later to search out her own spiritual calling is a testament to her mentor Effie, and the faithfulness of our God.

Lucifer will do whatever he d*mn well likes
By James B.
Screwing up a comic book series based on Lucifer would be a pretty easy thing to do. Putting aside the basic religion problems that you inevitably run into, having one character who is massively stronger than basically everyone else in the universe has a high potential to turn into a boring wish-fulfillment story very fast.

I am happy to report that Mike Carey is too good of a writer for that.

Lucifer, and the various characters he gets to interact with, are prone to spouting awesome quips to stunning background art. But the real depth of the series lies in its side characters. Mike Carey learned from Neil Gaiman that in the face of an omnipotent protagonist, the only way to have the emotional beats that take comics to the next levels is to have a great supporting cast, and Carey delivers. I highly recommend this to any comics fan.

My favorite of the five books
By Peter J. Orvetti
This was my favorite of the five volumes in the series, as we see Lucifer cast into the role of god of a new creation, realizing that the task of stitching together a universe is harder than it looks. This book tells us more about Mazikeen, who often does not get the attention she deserves in the series, and also shows that there's more to Michael than blind obedience,

The positives of this series: It is beautifully drawn and exquisitely imagined, with worlds upon worlds portrayed with careful detail and nuance. The characters are for the most part similarly cast -- this is a complex Lucifer, and among the other richly drawn characters are reluctant deity Elaine Belloc and ambitious Hell denizen Christopher Rudd. This series is not on a par with "Sandman," but little is. It will be enjoyed by many of those who loved the original.

The negatives: The story gets weighed down by its own mythology. Heaps of terminology are piled on, and every coming clash is portrayed as if it will be the apex moment of all creation... which of course it is not, because something needs to be left for the next issue. After a while, the incessant apocalypticism reads like the boy who cried wolf, and just gets tiresome.

Will is all he needs
By Jeffrey Crider
Lucifer is one of the most interesting character in all of comics. He has near limitless power when at his full potential but wins wars with his words and his wits. Even at his most vulnerable he's dangerous to near omnipotent enemies. If you're a comic lover, who loves Sandman and other Vertigo comics Lucifer series is a must read

She has visited 33 countries including Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Yemen, Afghanistan, North Cyprus, Morocco, Tunisia, Jordan, Western Sahara, Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania.

Worth a read even though it is not easy to go there
By Dromomanic
In 2003 Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, who was in charge of the Iraq post-war reconstruction, offered up some advice stating,"Tourism is going to be something important in that country as soon as the security situation is resolved, and I think that will be resolved as the Iraqis take over more and more responsibility for their own government." (Source: George Packer. The Assassins' Gate: America in Iraq (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, NY 2005, pp. 242). It is now 2015 and with the rise of ISIL, the security situation in Iraq has deteriorated greatly. Last month, Bradt released the 2nd edition of their Iraq guidebook, first published in 2002. It was clearly a bold move as between 2003 and 2009, tourism in Iraq had all but disappeared except for religious tourism to the holy Shia sites of Karbala and Najaf. In 2009, one of the book's authors,Geoff Hann, organized a tour to the country which encompassed almost the length of Iraq from Kurdistan down to Basra stopping at many archaeological sites along the way. From then on, Mr. Hann has led very comprehensive tours to the country annually. His tour company is one of less than a handful to do that. Clearly Iraq is not a travel destination that can easily be arranged, and the number of tourists (not the religious type) that make it to the country annually probably do not reach 3 digits. It is in this context that I find the publication of this guidebook a real surprise and kudos to Bradt for making this possible.. This book is written to be a guidebook only. It will not go into depth about Mesopotamian and Iraqi history, nor does it strive to be an archaeological catalog of the ancient sites. Alongside the descriptions of the many cities and sites, one is surprised to see listings which include "how to get there", rankings of hotels, shopping, lists of local restaurants, etc. How many tourists actually get into Iraq to see the sites described in the book? Unfortunately the answer is "not many". Some of the sites have now sadly been destroyed by ISIL, and the book does mention this; BUT, the book is a good read, well written by people who have traveled extensively in the country, and and gives hope that in the future tourism will definitely become an important factor in the Iraqi economy. The only criticism I have is that it would be nice to have the inclusion of more photographs.

Review

‘This is an excellent core course book, suitable for both native and non-native speakers of English alike. It is well written and provides up-to-date coverage of a wide range of topics.’

Howard Jopp, University of Hull

'The balance between the width and depth of Civilization analysis makes this an excellent textbook for students at the introductory level of the field. John Oakland covers a wide range of topics without becoming bogged down in details and while preserving the complexities of British Civilization issues and debates.'

Ane Vikaune, NTNU

‘Oakland’s British Civilization not only provides an historical overview, but also an in-depth insight into the issues and debates encountered when studying Britain, its institutions and people.

For those who are fascinated by Britain, this is a book not to be missed; for those who aren’t, this book will certainly change your mind.’

Li-Jiuan Lilie Tsay, Ming-Chuan University

'A highly-readable exploration of British culture, media and the arts. The updated edition examines areas other books on the subject fail to address and the exercises at the end of each chapter are current and thought-provoking. This would be a valuable addition to the bookshelf for all undergraduates of the field.'

Russell Clark, Keele University
