From Publishers Weekly
It really is all about you and improving the way you present yourself, declare the husband-and-wife Beckwiths (Selling the Invisible) in this refreshing career primer. Unlike many similar books, this is not an autobiography masquerading as wisdom. The Beckwiths stay out of the book except when Harry's experience as a bestselling business writer and head of a marketing firm or Christine's as an award-winning speaker and cancer-survivor is directly relevant. Instead, they offer practical advice for effective and memorable interpersonal interactions. Above all, they stress communicating with brevity and clarity—suggesting that every document be cut in half before sending and giving 30-minute speeches in 22 minutes. Their own prose is pared down to short, readable lessons on topics like the importance of making good first impressions and the secrets of successful selling, which they describe as the artful handling of information, presented with forethought and enough passion to be persuasive without making anyone uncomfortable. Readers at the start of their careers or in need of an inspirational brushup will find much of use. (Mar. 1)

We sell throughout most of our lives, so why not do it well? Without being deceptive, we can make adjustments in our presentation, our appearance, and our story that create a good first impression and a strong motivation to help us. This production is an astute lesson on etiquette, communication, positioning, and promoting maximum openness to our requests, especially when making formal presentations to people in authority. From PowerPoint technique to necktie and business card selections, the authors present the rationales and the strategies for putting your best foot forward. Co-author Christine Beckwith's sections are reasonably effective; however, narrator Lisa DeSimone's overeagerness with presenting them is distracting. Great Book
By John Chancellor
You, Inc. is really a great book. There is both good news and bad news about the book. It is extremely easy to read. You simply fly through the book. Which is good and bad. The lessons are so short and there are so many of them, it makes it difficult to absorb and remember all the great information.

But it is a book that you can pick up anytime and start reading anywhere in the book and find something valuable. All the lessons stand on their own. Harry presents over 150 ideas and lessons about how to make your business and/or yourself better.

If you are familiar with his other best selling works, "Selling the Invisible" and "What Client's Love", you will feel very comfortable with this book. (If you have not read these two book, I highly recommend them.)As you read the book, you will find yourself saying, "I know that." But as Harry instructs there is a huge difference between knowing and doing. And all too often, we think because we know, we do. As Beckwith points out, that is simply not the case.

Christine Beckwith, Harry's wife, contributes to the book. Her writing is a lot more personal and touching.

Harry gives a lot of insight into why we do the things we do. The book is filled with very valuable information and should be read ever so often as a refresher or reminder to do the things we know.

Well worth reading ... two or three times per year.

This book is horrible! I wish there were more bad reviews so I knew not to waste my time! It's the most disorganized book I've ever read and even if it were better organized, it only peripherally touches on self-promotion. Do not buy!!! Don't even read it for free.

A rehash of past books
By Alan C.
It's an okay book, but it's basically a rehash of Beckwith's prior books plus a touch of "What Color is Your Parachute." If you don't already have any of these on your shelf, this book is a worthwhile buy,

Personally, I still recommend to my students "What Color is Your Parachute."

Griftopia: A Story of Bankers, Politicians, and the Most Audacious Power Grab in American History, by Matt Taibbi

A brilliantly illuminating and darkly comic tale of the ongoing financial and political crisis in America

The financial crisis that exploded in 2008 isn’t past but prologue. The grifter class—made up of the largest players in the financial industry and the politicians who do their bidding—has been growing in power, and the crisis was only one terrifying manifestation of how they’ve hijacked America’s political and economic life.

Matt Taibbi has combined deep sources, trailblazing reportage, and provocative analysis to create the most lucid, emotionally galvanizing account yet written of this ongoing American crisis. He offers fresh reporting on the backroom deals of the bailout; tells the story of Goldman Sachs, the “vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity”; and uncovers the hidden commodities bubble that transferred billions of dollars to Wall Street while creating food shortages around the world.

This is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the labyrinthine inner workings of this country, and the profound consequences for us all.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Taibbi eviscerates Wall Street for what he considers frauds perpetrated on the American people over the last ten years. Deftly delving deeply into complicated financial history and lingo, Taibbi deftly lays the subject bare, rendering heretofore-dense subject matter simple without being simplistic. Blame for the recent mortgage collapse, commodities bubble, and tech bubble are laid at the feet of a relatively small number of bankers and traders who, in the author's opinion, act without fear of reciprocity from a U.S. government no longer representative of the American people. He begins by awarding the title "Biggest Asshole In The Universe" to former-Fed Chief Alan Greenspan, taking him to task for willfully or stupidly disemboweling what little regulation the financial markets may have had before his tenure. This theme resounds throughout, and Taibbi asserts that the collusion between Wall Street and the White House has effectively turned the United States into a massive casino, in which working Americans are regularly bilked out of their savings and homes while the wealthy are repeatedly rewarded for their graft. It's an important and worthy read, but not for the Randian disciple or Goldman-Sachs alum. (Nov.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Rolling Stone contributing editor Taibbi delivers a blistering examination of the upheaval that has roiled the American economic system over the past several years. At the heart of the upheaval, he says, is a vein of greed running up and down the real-estate industry, from mortgage brokers who falsified customer loan applications to banks that parceled out mortgages to second and third parties to rating agencies that signed off on highly suspect loans. Taibbi saves a good deal of venom for former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan, arguing that Greenspan’s philosophy of easy cash, limited government oversight of markets, and bailing out “too big to fail” financial institutions all fueled the recent economic meltdown. And Taibbi profiles a recently passed health-care bill severely compromised by an all-powerful insurance lobby. As critical as he is of the process—a process not likely to get fixed any time soon—he doesn’t seem to carry an agenda; instead, like any good investigative reporter, he mostly follows his nose. --Alan Moores

Review
“A stinging new history of the financial crisis that heralds a return of Menckenesque, dirt-under-the-fingernails American journalism.”—GQ

“A relentlessly disturbing, penetrating exploration of the root causes of the trauma that upended economic security in millions of American homes . . . a full-scale indictment of Wall Street and Washington.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Matt Taibbi is [Hunter S.] Thompson’s heir. . . . [Griftopia] is the most lucid, justifiably angry description of what happened and what continues to happen to our nation’s economy.”—Seattle Post-Intelligencer

“Taibbi chronicles the corruption of the political process with indignation and dark humor. The takeaway? Be angry, but blame the right culprits.”—Time

Good News For People Who Love Bad News
By sneaky-sneaky
Wow, what a wonderful piece of depressing work. Matt Taibbi writes like the manic offspring of Hunter S. Thompson and William F. Buckley, his prose has a wicked, glinting edge, he pulls no punches in his tirades, and he lays the blame for the current economy squarely at the door of unparalleled Wall Street greed and White House collusion.
The American economy has been hollowed into a huge funnel, and everything poured into it is sucked out the other end by the rapacious maw of Goldman Sachs. Why Goldman? Well, as Mr. Taibbi points out, they are the only ones left. Lehman Brothers was allowed to fail, Bear Stearns was swallowed, and AIG burned down for the insurance money. There are now fewer entities to siphon off the profits, and curiously enough, Goldman had former executives posted throughout both the Bush and Obama administrations, not to mention the Fed and the governorship of NJ!
The three major bubbles that recently struck the economy all emanated from Wall Street. The tech, commodity, and housing bubbles were engineered to squeeze every last dime out of America regardless of the future.
Wall Street has responded to Taibbi's Rolling Stone articles by disapproving of language that describes various CEOs as "mf"ers, and their websites as "BS.com" and other colorfully correct terminology; but Wall Street forgot to refute the facts, they haven't attempted to dispute what they did. A few CEOs have tried to blame the mortgage meltdown on subprime, complaining that lower income folks were socially engineered into housing--a swipe at both people and policy--but as Taibbi correctly points out, you can find maybe 1.4 trillion in subprime, but another 13 trillion is still missing.
There must be a few one star reviews up for 'Griftopia' by now, as Mr. Taibbi skewers everyone from the tea party to Ayn Rand and her evil disciple, Alan Greenspan (his chapter is entitled "The Biggest A--hole in the Universe.") But the author blames Washington rather than any one party, and admits that the tea party has some valid points, even if they don't know it themselves.
Matt Taibbi also has a great talent for explaining fiendish investment instruments like credit default swaps and tranches, none of which I fully understood, but now have a better grasp of. He uses analogies ranging from burgers to cars as he explains commodities, CDO squares, and other arcana that have reached directly into our pockets and pension plans and ended up as mega-yachts floating off the Hamptons. Finally, there's no remedy offered, no ten recommendations, Taibbi sticks to his investigative guns, epilogues out, and leaves your jaw hanging in disbelief at the extent of the scams that have sent America to the poor house.

Robbing what's left
By VMR
It was oddly comforting reading Taibbi's book the day after midterm elections. Reading 'Griftopia' convinced me that the Tea party, crazy people in Congress, the President who is doing his esoteric bipartisanship song and dance - nothing really matters. We have all been so profoundly screwed over, and for such a long time, that current political freak show will not make one iota of difference. Taibbi so neatly sums up life through the end of the USA as we know it (or the USA we believe we know) that I thought the outrage is beside the point.
The most devastating passage for me is the one where he explains what this country could have done with $13 trillion spent on bailouts: pay every mortgage in existence, and build house for every American who doesn't have one. He writes: "But we didn't do that, and we didn't spend money on anything else useful, either. Why? For a very good reason. Because we are no good anymore at building bridges and highways or coming up with brilliant innovations in energy or medicine... What are we good at? Robbing what's left." Devastating, and at the same time weirdly liberating. I would, after all, rather know the worst truth, than live in the fantasy USA we are being sold every day through our irresponsible media and callous politicians.
Taibbi's been compared to Michael Lewis, but I find this comparison plain lazy. Lewis writes about financial shenanigans with measured cynicism, and with a sort of appreciation for bankers who destroyed middle class of this country. Unlike him, Taibbi doesn't mince words, or tries to appear coolly above it all. He's, after all, as screwed up as is the rest of us.

The Long Con
By Paul E. Richardson
It is totally appropriate that Griftopia was released on election day. For, as Taibbi shows, elections really don't matter. Democrats and Republicans are all in on the Long Con that has emasculated our political system and made it (and all of us) beholden to Wall Street.

Taibbi cut his journalistic teeth, as it were, in the streets of 1990s Moscow, practicing gonzo journalism as a partner in the anything but PC expat paper "The Exile". So he knows from corruption and dollar politics. And in Griftopia he shows how greed and corruption have saturated the fabric of our political life so completely that we rarely recognize its extent or its chief spokesmen.

Like Alan Greenspan, whom the media painted as a parable-speaking sage, but whom Taibbi shows to be a charlatan bizarrely infatuated with Ayn Rand, and a guy who repeatedly got it wrong (throughout his entire career) about where the economy was headed. Yet Greenspan was perfectly clear about where he wanted the economy to go: decreasing banking/corporate/Wall Street regulation and taxes on the rich. He was, in fact, a chief architect of the hoovering of riches from the working to the monied classes, which Taibbi shows has been the underlying factor in every bubble created over the last 20 years.

The revelations are legion here. Of the insider deals in the 2008 Bailout, of the swindlers behind the housing bubble, of the ridiculously short-sighted trend of covering budget deficits by leasing key municipal assets to foreign sovereign wealth funds, and the trillion dollar sellout that was the Obama healthcare plan.

And Taibbi knows of what he speaks, having spent considerable time reporting directly on the the Tea Party, in Washington and on the campaign trail. As a Rolling Stone correspondent, he is certainly on the liberal end of the spectrum, yet he gores both right and left in Griftopia, and he does it in language that is fully appropriate for the subject matter, calling subjects "beetle-browed, balding types" ... "morons" ... "idiots" ... and plenty of other epithets which are not printable here.

Get this book. Read it. And, if after doing so you are not outraged, then you do not have a pulse.

I think that there are some wrong proofs in this book.
By A Customer
In the chapter 2 (operations on fuzzy sets), section 2.5 I found some wrong theorems. For instance Theorem 2.8 contain an false partial result: u(a,0)=a. We can define an fuzzy union that satisfy the axioms U1-U4 and does not fulfills the above mentioned condition. So I think that are needed some modifications in the axioms of union and intersections.

A good bunch of ideas to make the prospect client analize and acknowledge the advantages of installing a security system; make him fulfill all the knowledge lack he had about security technology; make him recognize the advantage of having installed a system that will help you to sleep better. In addition, some suggestions to improve sales task force performance, how to measure results, etc.
In a nutshell, an excelent book for the task intended.

About the Author
Ernest Hemingway was born in Chicago in 1899, the second of six children. In 1917, he joined the Kansas City Star as a cub reporter. The following year, he volunteered as an ambulance driver on the Italian front, where he was badly wounded but decorated for his services. He returned to America in 1919, and married in 1921. In 1922 he reported on the Greco-Turkish war, then resigned from journalism to devote himself to fiction. He settled in Paris, associating with other expatriates like Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein. He was passionately involved with bullfighting, big-game hunting and deep-sea fishing. His direct and deceptively simple style spawned generations of imitators but no equals. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954, and died in 1961.

Part One: Prefatory Matters

Chapter 1: Job Interview

Jack Torrance thought: Officious little prick.

Ullman stood five-five, and when he moved, it was with the prissy speed that seems to be the exclusive domain of all small plump men. The part in his hair was exact, and his dark suit was sober but comforting. I am a man you can bring your problems to, that suit said to the paying customer. To the hired help it spoke more curtly: This had better be good, you. There was a red carnation in the lapel, perhaps so that no one on the street would mistake Stuart Ullman for the local undertaker.

As he listened to Ullman speak, Jack admitted to himself that he probably could not have liked any man on that side of the desk -- under the circumstances.

Ullman had asked a question he hadn't caught. That was bad; Ullman was the type of man who would file such lapses away in a mental Rolodex for later consideration.

"I'm sorry?"

"I asked if your wife fully understood what you would be taking on here. And there's your son, of course." He glanced down at the application in front of him. "Daniel. Your wife isn't a bit intimidated by the idea?"

"Wendy is an extraordinary woman."

"And your son is also extraordinary?"

Jack smiled, a big wide PR smile. "We like to think so, I suppose. He's quite self-reliant for a five-year-old."

No returning smile from Ullman. He slipped Jack's application back into a file. The file went into a drawer. The desk top was now completely bare except for a blotter, a telephone, a Tensor lamp, and an in/out basket. Both sides of the in/out were empty, too.

Ullman stood up and went to the file cabinet in the corner. "Step around the desk, if you will, Mr. Torrance. We'll look at the hotel floor plans."

He brought back five large sheets and set them down on the glossy walnut plain of the desk. Jack stood by his shoulder, very much aware of the scent of Ullman's cologne. All my men wear English Leather or they wear nothing at all came into his mind for no reason at all, and he had to clamp his tongue between his teeth to keep in a bray of laughter. Beyond the wall, faintly, came the sounds of the Overlook Hotel's kitchen, gearing down from lunch.

"Top floor," Ullman said briskly. "The attic. Absolutely nothing up there now but bric-a-brac. The Overlook has changed hands several times since World War II and it seems that each successive manager has put everything they don't want up in the attic. I want rattraps and poison bait sowed around in it. Some of the third-floor chambermaids say they have heard rustling noises. I don't believe it, not for a moment, but there mustn't even be that one-in-a-hundred chance that a single rat inhabits the Overlook Hotel."

Jack, who suspected that every hotel in the world had a rat or two, held his tongue.

"Of course you wouldn't allow your son up in the attic under any circumstances."

"No," Jack said, and flashed the big PR smile again. Humiliating situation. Did this officious little prick actually think he would allow his son to goof around in a rattrap attic full of junk furniture and God knew what else?

Ullman whisked away the attic floor plan and put it on the bottom of the pile.

"The Overlook has one hundred and ten guest quarters," he said in a scholarly voice. "Thirty of them, all suites, are here on the third floor. Ten in the west wing (including the Presidential Suite), ten in the center, ten more in the east wing. All of them command magnificent views."

Could you at least spare the salestalk?

But he kept quiet. He needed the job.

Ullman put the third floor on the bottom of the pile and they studied the second floor.

"Forty rooms," Ullman said, "thirty doubles and ten singles. And on the first floor, twenty of each. Plus three linen closets on each floor, and a storeroom which is at the extreme east end of the hotel on the second floor and the extreme west end on the first. Questions?"

Jack shook his head. Ullman whisked the second and first floors away.

"Now. Lobby level. Here in the center is the registration desk. Behind it are the offices. The lobby runs for eighty feet in either direction from the desk. Over here in the west wing is the Overlook Dining Room and the Colorado Lounge. The banquet and ballroom facility is in the east wing. Questions?"

"Only about the basement," Jack said. "For the winter caretaker, that's the most important level of all. Where the action is, so to speak."

"Watson will show you all that. The basement floor plan is on the boiler room wall." He frowned impressively, perhaps to show that as manager, he did not concern himself with such mundane aspects of the Overlook's operation as the boiler and the plumbing. "Might not be a bad idea to put some traps down there too. Just a minute..."

He scrawled a note on a pad he took from his inner coat pocket (each sheet bore the legend From the Desk of Stuart Ullman in bold black script), tore it off, and dropped it into the out basket. It sat there looking lonesome. The pad disappeared back into Ullman's jacket pocket like the conclusion of a magician's trick. Now you see it, Jacky-boy, now you don't. This guy is a real heavyweight.

They had resumed their original positions, Ullman behind the desk and Jack in front of it, interviewer and interviewee, supplicant and reluctant patron. Ullman folded his neat little hands on the desk blotter and looked directly at Jack, a small, balding man in a banker's suit and a quiet gray tie. The flower in his lapel was balanced off by a small lapel pin on the other side. It read simply staff in small gold letters.

"I'll be perfectly frank with you, Mr. Torrance. Albert Shockley is a powerful man with a large interest in the Overlook, which showed a profit this season for the first time in its history. Mr. Shockley also sits on the Board of Directors, but he is not a hotel man and he would be the first to admit this. But he has made his wishes in this caretaking matter quite obvious. He wants you hired. I will do so. But if I had been given a free hand in this matter, I would not have taken you on."

Jack's hands were clenched tightly in his lap, working against each other, sweating. Officious little prick, officious little prick, officious --

"I don't believe you care much for me, Mr. Torrance. I don't care. Certainly your feelings toward me play no part in my own belief that you are not right for the job. During the season that runs from May fifteenth to September thirtieth, the Overlook employs one hundred and ten people full-time; one for every room in the hotel, you might say. I don't think many of them like me and I suspect that some of them think I'm a bit of a bastard. They would be correct in their judgment of my character. I have to be a bit of a bastard to run this hotel in the manner it deserves."

He looked at Jack for comment, and Jack flashed the PR smile again, large and insultingly toothy.

Ullman said: "The Overlook was built in the years 1907 to 1909. The closest town is Sidewinder, forty miles east of here over roads that are closed from sometime in late October or November until sometime in April. A man named Robert Townley Watson built it, the grandfather of our present maintenance man. Vanderbilts have stayed here, and Rockefellers, and Astors, and Du Ponts. Four Presidents have stayed in the Presidential Suite, Wilson, Harding, Roosevelt, and Nixon."

"I wouldn't be too proud of Harding and Nixon," Jack murmured.

Ullman frowned but went on regardless. "It proved too much for Mr. Watson, and he sold the hotel in 1915. It was sold again in 1922, in 1929, in 1936. It stood vacant until the end of World War II, when it was purchased and completely renovated by Horace Derwent, millionaire inventor, pilot, film producer, and entrepreneur."

Get Ready to Take your Medicine!!!
By John Paul's Mom
The Shining is one of the best horror stories that I have ever read. It is Stephen King at his finest. I read this book about 25 years ago and it terrified me, and of course I have also seen the movie with Jack Nicholson a bunch of times over the years since reading the book. When I found out that Stephen King was publishing a sequel to The Shining this year, I wanted to prepare, so I dove back into re-reading The Shining and found that there was much that I did not recall about the book's intricacies regarding plot and characters, and tons of things that were very different from the movie, which had become ingrained into my mind as the mainstay over the years. To be honest, re-reading The Shining terrified me all over again in 2016 and it was so awesome – I experienced a truly freaked-out, page turning, frightened, jumping-at-shadows-late-at-night-in-my-own home horror-lover's bliss! I am still trying to pinpoint which characters and moments in the book scared me the most and I can't do it because there were so many. What a ride! I can honestly attest to the old clich that the book is way better than the movie. If you've never read The Shining, you are in for a real treat. If you are considering re-reading The Shining, please do so, by all means, I promise you will not be disappointed!

The Shining has been one of my favorite movies for as far back as I can remember
By Jessica Weil
The Shining has been one of my favorite movies for as far back as I can remember, and yet somehow I made it this far without ever reading it. Well, it was finally time to change that.
This story about the Torrance family and the haunted Overlook Hotel where they spend a secluded winter is truly chilling. As always, King’s character development is what stands out and makes it so successful.

Jack, the patriarch of the family, is by far the strongest and most well-developed character. He’s an abusive alcoholic whose anger issues have recently cost him his prestigious teaching job, leaving him no choice but to take a gig as the winter caretaker of a secluded resort in the Colorado mountains. As the hotel begins to takes hold of him, it’s hard to discern if it’s just Jack’s own inner demons or something much more malevolent.

This, to me, is the most interesting aspect of the book. I loved seeing how the hotel manipulated Jack by preying on his insecurities. And when his wife, Wendy, begins to fear him, it’s Jack-her-husband, not Jack-the-possessed, whom she initially fears—and we can’t really blame her.
The paranoia and dread mount quickly, encompassing Jack, Wendy and their son Danny—gifted with a sixth sense that’s both a blessing and a curse—in a sinister plot to trap them in the hotel forever.

This was a powerful, creepy read that kept me captivated, though I was hoping for a bit more cohesion to the sinister backstory. Also worth noting: once you’ve seen the movie, it’s impossible to picture anyone but Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance. This is one of the rare instances (yes, I’m going there!) where I liked the movie more than the book. I mean…Nicholson, Kubrick? Come on!

Don't read at night alone!
By Eileen
King is one of the most prolific writers of not only suspense / horror, but in all genres. His writing is so descriptive that you can see each blade of grass or smell the ocean as the protagonists and / antagonists do. He has a way of magically transporting the reader into the story. The Shining is about a recovering down-on-his-luck school teacher who is an aspiring playwright. He takes on the job of caretaker of a huge old resort hotel during the off season as a last resort to provide for his family. What he doesn't know is that the hotel is also a warehouse of old spirits, many of whom have died violently. The caretaker, John Torrance, has a son Danny who is gifted with ESP, Telepathy, can see images from the past and can foresee into the future. He is just a child but has amazingly strong powers, called the "shining" , and the hotel wants them. The evil hotel spirits eventually possess the body of John Torrance and attempt to turn him into a homicidal maniac. The hotel wants to come back to life and the only way to accomplish this is if they have Danny's powers. But there's only one way to get those powers.
