Although the most famous works of supernatural fiction ever penned -- Frankenstein, Dracula, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Picture of Dorian Gray etc. -- are indeed novels, the simple fact is that sustaining the sensations of terror and horror in this elongated form is no easy task and that the short story form is usually better suited for the creation of those elements designed to produce shivers in its readers. Although today in the Stephen King era the horror novel has become a staple of publishing this wasn’t always the case and it was a rare occasion that the full-length horror novel resonated with much of the reading public.

Writing under the name C.S. Cody, author Leslie Waller fashioned one of his first books, The Witching Night, in 1942. It’s too bad it got lost in the shuffle because it’s a pretty effective yarn which is somewhat reminiscent of the sort of stuff authors like the better-known Fritz Leiber and others of the “Weird Tales” era were turning out, namely a scenario where a modern urban character comes face to face with some ancient supernatural manifestations and influences. The writing is lean and the dialog and descriptive passages are sometimes suggestive of hardboiled detective fiction of the period with Cody/Waller keeping things moving at a good clip. There are also a few surprises in store for those readers who might think they see everything coming well in advance.

About the Author

Paul F. Cook is the Grace B. Kerr Centennial Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Oklahoma. His awards and achievements twice included the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship and he was the recipient of the National Institutes of Health Research Career Development Award from 1983 to 1988. Professor Cook is Associate Editor of Protein and Peptide Letters and Executive Editor of Proteins and Proteomics.

W.W. Cleland is the M.J. Johnson Professor and Steenbock Professor of Chemical Science at the Enzyme Institute at University of Wisconsin-Madison. In the early 1960s, Cleland's landmark papers created a theoretical framework for the study of steady-state kinetics of multisubstrate enzymes and laid the foundation for all subsequent steady-state studies. He serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Biological Chemistry and of Biochemistry. Recognized by many as the "father of modern enzyme kinetics," Professor Cleland was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1985.

Mainly steady-state, and entirely chemical

The senior author (Cleland) had perhaps the greatest influence of anyone on the practice of enzyme kinetics during the 1960s and 1970s, as witnessed by the very large number of papers from that period that acknowledge his contribution to the work presented, and by the large number of papers that continue to use his terminology and way of representing reaction mechanisms. (Younger biochemists will perhaps not know that he gave the ping pong mechanism its name.) However, until now his recommendations on the subject were not conveniently gathered together in one book, and it was necessary either to go back to his well known series of papers published in 1963 or to various later review articles. This book will be welcome, therefore, to anyone in search of a modern source.

It is a measure of how little the subject has changed that a large part of the book could have been written in 1963; indeed, it gives the impression that large parts of it were indeed written then. The major advance that is covered in detail is the development of the use of isotopes for studying enzyme mechanisms, including both the use of isotopes as labels and the use of kinetic isotope effects as mechanistic probes. Around 100 pages, or about a quarter of the book, are devoted to these topics, and for readers already thoroughly conversant with the 1963 papers these pages will constitute the most valuable part, the part they are most likely to consult in the future. As both authors have made important contributions to the use of isotopes, it is no surprise that the treatment is masterly.

Some other parts of the book are more disappointing. The treatment of pre-steady-state kinetics is superficial: the major methods, such as stopped-flow, rapid quenching and relaxation (temperature jump etc.) are briefly described, but with little indication of what they are useful for. Similar criticisms can be, and indeed often are, made about most books on enzyme kinetics that have a primary emphasis on the steady state, but one could have hoped for more.

In the entire book there is just one sentence (in the Preface, on page xvii) that mentions that enzymes are of interest not just to chemists but that they also have physiological roles to fulfil. Not surprisingly, therefore, although there are a few pages that mention the existence of cooperative and allosteric effects, there is no indication of what functions these might have in the living organism, and no discussion of the kinetics of multi-enzyme systems.

not as much as hoped

I want to improve my enzyme kinetics, so have been looking for books that are helpful. Found this one at amazon. Because the price tag is not small, I decided to rent it from library to have a feeling first. Tons of equations without explanation how they are derived. Although references are provided, it really diminishes the value of being a book: not need to look elsewhere much.
I believe if a couple of equations can be derived in details as examples. It will make a big difference in people's understanding and will be easy for readers to follow when it goes to later and later, such as the isotope labeling.
I never bought the book.

Good propositions, a little repetitive

As always, Pasi Sahlberg calls into question the best ways to educate youth. This book provides some interesting strategies to think about school structures and systems, and the part about the importance of teacher collaboration and an investment in equity resonates with everything else I am reading. At times, though, I was not sure where the idea in one chapter ended and the next chapter began. That might have been part of his argument, though.

I DON'T KNOW !!!

Very interesting read indeed... I found the intermittent cursing to be quite humorous. It's without a doubt - an entertaining, and mind boggling adventure. It makes you feel as if you're right in the classroom, getting smacked with Seung Sahn's stick.

I'd be lying if I said I was able to figure out the various kong-ans, but I'm sure I'm not the only one (I wish there were answers to these riddles, BUT that's probably asking for way too much). However, I did notice that even though I didn't understand the kong-ans that certain things did make more sense as the chapters went on... So, by the end of the book, you have a slightly better understanding than you did at the beginning. This book definitely needs to be reread. Some stories are just plain funny, some are puzzling, and some have a story to tell. *It seems that every other page someone is getting hit hard, hahaha... It's a good thing that hitting is a sign of affection from student to teacher. I've never read a book even close to something like this - it makes you wonder how amazing this man was in person. I subsequently purchased another book from Soen-sa, "Wanting Enlightenment Is a Big Mistake". I want to see how this one fares as well.

I'm hesitant to take a stab at this BUT, if I had to write something that I learned through these pages:

Naturally scriptures, holy reading and their corresponding history are very important (so is growing up and learning all the necessary skills we need to survive in this crazy world). Additionally vital is at some point in our life, we have to stop thinking we know everything. Human beings today are at a point where we just think our way through life. We think we have an explanation for everything --- I think, I think, I think.... We forget our true nature of just feeling or experiencing `things as it is'. Instead of simply experiencing something right in front of our eyes --- we sit, stare, try to break it down and explain it all... With all of this going on, we fail to realize that this precious moment is fleeing from us... What should we do? We must drop everything - `put it all down' and realize these things staring us in the face, every second of every day. We have to lose our overactive mind, and just see with our eyes what is in front of us - appreciate it for what it is, and experience it for all it has to offer...

I can honestly say that after reading this book: what I thought I knew - I DON'T KNOW...

His first and best - a unique book

Echoing many other reviewers: this book is great. It's funny, it's. serious. It's the voice of a Korean Zen master who has just arrived in the US (written in 1977), just-learned English, who coins his own idioms to get things across. It does not at all read like a "spiritual" book, or like any other Zen book. It's as though the mind and spirit of Huck Finn were fused with a riddling chessmaster and used to present Zen.

When I first read this -in 1979 - it was like: I've never seen anything remotely like this. I had read 2 or 3 Zen books previously - they seemed interesting but "normal" - whereas this was anything but normal. Only decades later -helped by Seung Sahn's later "Compass of Zen" and some about the Chinese and Korean antecedents - do I see how this fits.

You can read this for the ideas, or the stories, or for the history (as a record of the arrival of a new religion from a very foreign shore). And for practise: his colorful:English expressions (only go straight-don't know) are like "seeds" for meditation, aids to "cut off all thinking". So I found this useful as a meditation guide even though it does not give anything like formal instruction (the group's web site does, though).

This is maybe more useful as a "second" book on eastern spirituality - after a "first" more conventional one. It also some tolerance for certain types of questions: when you see objects are they outside your mind or inside? (But these are meditation seeds, not philosophical treatises.). That's how I came to it - and found it fresh and compelling and unexpected.

In this world, but not of it.

Comprised of over a hundred personal letters, lectures, stories and anecdotes, this book is arranged in small chunks that make it easy to set aside, and then come back to later, or devour all at once.

'Dropping Ashes on the Buddha' gives an excellent description of Zen teaching, and the mindsets that come with different levels of understanding within the framework of Zen. It engages in active puzzle solving, using both ancient parables, humor and dharma speeches to convey how to use this puzzling to cut off thinking, and achieve a quieting of the mind. I give it five stars, because it gently explains, in plain English, some very subtle points of experience and understanding that have taken hundreds of masters many years to articulate. It is an enjoyable reading experience, despite the circular and repetitive nature of Zen teaching. I have read this book over and over, at different points in my life, and I have learned many things from it.

I would recommend this book to beginners interested in Zen, and to people who have followed the path for a very long time. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in what Zen has to offer insofar as peace and the prospect of letting go are concerned.

The Aftermath trilogy is probably the most important story in the new Star Wars canon and I'll can say is too bad is was given to a terrible writer. I don't know who to blame for this fiasco - Jennifer Heddle, Senior Editor for Lucasfilm, the publisher Del Rey, or Chuck Wendig himself. Thin characters that are hard to care about as well as poor characterizations of established characters. Plot lines that would best be suited for young adult books. The space battles are a joke. A writer that was more suited to military sci-fi would have been so much better for this series. If it's the end of the empire you are looking for you'll be better off looking elsewhere. I'm hoping that another writer comes along to tell the story from a different point of view so we can get this important story told properly.

Oh...that's the plot? What a load of crap.

This is a poor book. I liked it better than Aftermath (which was really bad), but less than Life Debt (which was OK). The characters continue to develop in predictable ways--except for Gallius Rax. That character was built-up to be something significant, but he's not much of anything really. And the main plot--to destroy everything that was the Empire by activating the self destruct on a planet--is pretty lame. And then we have the 'child soldiers' bit to show just how evil the bad guys are becoming...

It's just not good, doesn't even feel like Star Wars

I'm a fan of most of the new canon. I'm enjoying many of the new characters, but this series brings nothing to the Star Wars universe. The characters are extremely weak and seem like a bunch of children on a playground.

All the questions that need answered are left for someone else to answer. There are a lot of random pointless plot points opened up, like reintroducing Jar Jar Binks, that have no bearing on the rest of the story being told. We get teased with the mention of Mandalorian Armor in this book again, but why? It has nothing to do with anything in this series. There are lightsabers mentioned, but nothing else to accompany them.

If this is any indication on where the new EU is going, I'm going to continue to be sorely disappointed in shallow content.

I'm hoping the new Thrawn book can revitalize what Wendig has destroyed. Bring back the essence of Star Wars, and keep Chuck Wendig out of it.
