An exciting debut series with plenty of atmosphere, surprises and horror!

Lynda O’Rourke had us all gripped with her d�but, DRUG, the shocks and suspense, the fear and horror. And, she has done it again with DWELL. After cutting it fine and managing to escape the hospital, Cruor Pharma, Kassidy is now on the run from the demonic staff and the police helping to cover up what is happening there. It is certainly not a drug trial in the ‘normal’ sense that she believed she was volunteering for. Now with her veins filling up with the thick, black VA20, her body has survived and is the perfect host for a demon to ‘dwell’. But, Kassidy is also concerned about what will happen once her whole body is full of the stuff.

Max’s brother, Robert, had previously had the VA10 drug and had survived. The Bishop’s house was the last place they knew he was going to and Max was desperate to see his brother again. And so, Kassidy, Max, Raven and Jude aim to visit the Bishop’s house to find out if Robert had made it there, and where else he may have left for.

On their journey they stop off at, Kassidy’s friend, Heather’s flat to clean up. During which there are some scary scenes with plenty of dark horror. One scene happens when Kassidy is in the shower, and although her friends hear the sounds of a struggle, there is nothing else out of place to convince them it was anything paranormal. Kassidy questions what she has experienced but her gut still tells her it was real. The horror scenes are shocking and can make you a little jumpy due to their detailed descriptions that make them realistic, and making it a perfect read for this genre. The reader will certainly be on full alert reading Dwell.

The gang all share a little hope that being at the Bishop’s house, around holiness, will keep out the demons. However, things are not always as they seem. And, staying with the Bishop and Mrs. Gables was a little awkward and eerie. There was a dark atmosphere from the large, quiet but old home they lived in. It was unclear whether Mrs. Gables wanted them to leave or stay. She doesn’t seem too pleased of their arrival. And what is it with keeping the fires constantly lit in every room? Not to mention the amount of birds they have getting stuck in the chimneys, and the noise from the derelict third floor. The atmosphere of the house and of the dialogue between the characters is brilliant for creating the tension and fear of the reader.

Aside from the horror, Dwell is also quite an emotional part of the gang’s ordeal. Kassidy is frustrated, angry, scared and exhausted from everything they have all been through, what she has witnessed and what her mind is trying to understand about it all. Lynda O’Rourke‘s language and description is so powerful and moving at this point that the reader feels everything that Kassidy does as she reflects on what has happened to her and her friends. We feel her despair as well as her strength.

(Whilst her friends are taking some time to rest)“… Why couldn’t I rid myself of these awful images that were screwing up my head? Why wouldn’t my brain just shut down and give me some peace? I could feel myself filling with anger – frustration. I just wanted to sleep. I wanted to escape my own mind and sleep was the only place I could forget. I kicked out at the chair. It topple over – clattering onto the bare floorboards. I didn’t care if I woke the others. Why should they sleep so peacefully? I was fired up. Ready for a fight. I wanted to hit someone – anyone. I wanted to vent my anger. Make them feel the pain I was suffering – hurt them like I was hurting – spill their blood like mine had. I grabbed large clumps of my hair in both fists and yanked down hard, gritting my teeth. I wanted to scream at the top of my voice – yell so hard – go on some mad frenzy – smashing everything up that I came across. I wanted everyone to feel my pain.”

This also shows that sometimes the power of writing in first person is very strong. When the reader knows exactly what is racing through the characters minds it makes it so much easier to connect with and understand them. It brings out more realism and the reader can place themselves in the story, making the danger, the emotions and the action so much more intense. Lynda O’Rourke has used this brilliantly.

Kassidy hasn’t had a perfect life, with her dad being an alcoholic, now this, and so she reaches the point where she is beginning to feel completely broken. She doesn’t know what to do, she just needs someone, some comfort. There is a ‘moment’ between her and Jude as Jude’s character begins to show his more serious, sincere and caring side. However, Kassidy doesn’t really know what she is doing, and it is over before anything serious has begun. I loved this scene. It shows perfectly how Kassidy’s character is flawed, giving in with a moment of weakness. It is something that many of us can relate to or at least understand, making her more believable. It was also great to see the different side of Jude and see his character and his relationship with the others develop.

But, what of Doctor Ben Fletcher? He’s a host to an evil demon, yet he did help Kassidy to escape. Her true feelings, I feel, lie with him. But how can she possibly be anywhere near him? She knows that the true human person is still present inside of him, but the demon could change all of that. Is there still a part of her that wants to see him again?

“…If Ben… had no control over his actions or couldn’t remember the things he did, then could I really blame him for what had happened to me?”

Their hope of survival lies with Doctor Langstone, a demon, yet a doctor who was against the drug trials at Cruor Pharma and left because of them. Maybe he can offer answers, or will be drawn to the group from his demon side. Either way, there will be plenty more horror and surprises. I cannot wait to read book 3, Demon!!

You don't know who is good or evil

Another sensational read by Linda O'Rourke. This follow up to her debut book Drug blew me away. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Every heart pounding page-turning moment I was filled with dread and anxiety not knowing what was going to happen. I'm not sure where she got this gift of writing but she really truly is blessed. Kassidy and her friends are getting deep into this crazy demon world. You don't know who is good or evil. No one can be trusted. I can't wait for Demon. I am officially hooked on this talented author!

This book is as good as the first one, if not better. I started the book this morning and couldn't stop til the end. Well done I love this series and can't wait till the next one. If you have not read the first book in this series. I highly recommend that you do. I promise you will not be sorry. I wish I could tell you what was in the book, but that is for you to find out. A must-read for BioShock fans!!!

!!WARNING!! This book is a prequel to the games, but DO NOT read this book before playing them (Why haven't you played them yet???). It will give away certain "details" that the player should not know about when playing the games. This holds especially true for the first BioShock. I won't mention any of these spoilers in this review, so read on...

I wasn't expecting much when my copy of BioShock:Rapture arrived in the mail, but I consider myself a pretty big fan of the series and the idea of a prequel in print was enough to make me preorder it. I was not disappointed... far from it in fact.

If you've played the BioShock games then you know a great deal of the storytelling is done via audio diaries. These audio diaries are exactly what they sound like... the audio recorded thoughts of those that lived in Rapture. As you progress through the games you discover these recordings scattered about here and there. Each diary contains a small piece of a puzzle; a very dark puzzle that paints a picture of what took place in Rapture. From these diaries we learn of some of the horrible experiences of its citizens, as well as the events that ultimately caused its downfall. John Shirley does an extraordinary job of tying these diaries together into a novel that really fleshes out the story of Rapture.

In bringing these diaries together, Shirley takes side-characters from the games and gives our brief encounters with them more meaning. People that had small cameos from the games are given new life as you see the events that led to their fate in greater detail and from different angles. Not every character is given as much attention as others, but overall I was very satisfied.

I'm a very big BioShock fan so I'll admit that I might have some bias, but I'm trying to look at the book as objectively as I can. As one other reader mentioned, there are many different POVs. I can see where one might feel that some of these don't quite fit when considering the book by itself, as they serve little purpose to move the story along at times and can seem out of place. But for those that experienced the games, these "teasers" that seem unnecessary are actually a prelude for what came afterward. They're more fan-service than anything else; Shirley even dedicated the book itself to the fans of BioShock and BioShock 2. In addition to the spoilers the book contains, this is another reason I strongly suggest reading the book only AFTER you have played the games. These different POVs will be more familiar to you and will likely be more appreciated if you've played the games. That's my opinion anyway.

The only other issue I could see some readers possibly having is that the book definitely doesn't read like your everyday novel... it's choppy and jumps around, taking place over the entire decade that housed the rise and fall of Rapture (430 pages to cover 14 years, actually). I had no problem with this myself; the story was still very easy to follow and flowed well.

Bottom line... this book was a great read and it has me wanting to play through both games all over again! If you are a fan of BioShock then I highly recommend this book.

While the novel can stand alone on its own, it is recommended that the reader play through Bioshock 1 and 2 before reading the novel, as it is more effective as a whole if read after having played the games.

"Bioshock: Rapture" is set in 1945 and continues through the 50's. In it, we find a world changed by the recently fought Second World War and FDR's New Deal. Red communism is on the rise and the world is paranoid about possible nuclear war. Having escaped Communist Russia and come to America, only to find the U.S. aggressively adopting progressive policy, rich business tycoon Andrew Ryan is determined to find a place where business, science and art can flourish in an unchecked environment. Ryan is frustrated that the fruit of man's labor is taken from him by the state or by religion, and believes he can create an insular society free from the influence of the rest of the world, where freedom is the name of the game. What follows is a three-part tale that chronicles the creation of Ryan's utopia, and its eventual descent into madness. By the end of the story, the scene is set for the beginning of the Bioshock 1 videogame.

The plot of "Rapture" is incredibly interesting. It is a genius blend of both Ayn Rand and George Orwell; readers of those authors will immediately see similarities in "Rapture." However, while obviously inspired by these two visionary writers, "Rapture" does not feel ripped off, but rather comes across as an inspired reimagining of the ideas from Rand and Orwell. The plot moves through the years pretty quickly, and is always engaging. The reader should not expect a lot of violence or action in the first 2/3 of the book, but should expect an interesting blend of philosophy, intrigue, science and drama. In the last third of the book, chaos descends.

Mr. Shirley, the author, does an excellent job with the novel. The writing is top-notch, with references and dialogue that feel genuine to the 40's/50's setting. Vocabulary and colloquialisms are masterfully used, and really help catapult the novel to something transcending mere video game novelization. The characters are also brilliantly rendered, particularly Ryan, Lamb, Fontaine, Bill, Cohen, and others. So many of the characters Ryan brings on his grand experiment are eccentric, and Shirley does a bang-up job of highlighting those quirks, and spends enough time with each character that the reader really gets to know them. The reader will form a real emotional attachment with the more likable characters. The ending is handled masterfully, with both a sense of conclusion and a sense of mystery.

Those who have played the Bioshock games will notice how well the novel answers questions raised in the plot of the games. I was thoroughly confused by the plot of the first Bioshock game, but the novel really helped clear up the misunderstanding. The only plot element that was still hazy to me after reading the novel is what exactly ADAM and EVE are. We know what these two elements allow the user to do, but the science of the matter was glossed over. This small complaint was one of the only I had with the novel.

"Bioshock: Rapture" comes highly recommended, and is one of the best pieces of tie-in fiction I have read. Do yourself a favor and check it out, particularly if you are a fan of the games. Your experience will not be complete until you've read the timeless and tragic story behind the rise and fall of Andrew Ryan's shining city under the sea, Rapture.

I understood for the most part but felt like I was missing a good chunk of the story

I played Bioshock before reading this and found that I had a bit of a hard time connecting the dots between all of the audio diaries. I understood for the most part but felt like I was missing a good chunk of the story. This book helps with that feeling. It sets the atmosphere and circumstances in Rapture leading up to the first game. The writing isn't wonderful, but certainly good enough to flesh out the background story for the game and give the connections between the audio diaries found in the game.

I was a bit disappointed by the author in some instances using the text of the audio diaries direct from the game. This just felt like it didn't work in certain scenarios where the character was talking directly to another character rather than making an audio diary entry.

Overall, I think it's well done for providing the background, circumstances, and atmosphere that isn't completely provided by the game. The story was good but the writing was a little lacking. Felt like a young adult novel.

Insanity between the covers!

You'll laugh your "arse" off over this, the first in the series, from 1968. A classic! Originally bought it new for about 80 cents in 1968 - this one used was over $6 when I bought it again but well worth the trip again down memory lane! Been swimming?...No, I strolled over from Europe. You get the idea!

If you watch Thor, when Erik Selvig's character is at the library, the book he picks up is "myths and legends from around the world by anneka sunden" Although this title does not have the dust cover as seen in the movie showing Anneka Sunden's name at the top, it might be a reprint of it. So, if you're trying to find what the prop was, you might try ABE for the original, but if not, this one might just be 'it'.

I am a 15 year old and, I, as an avid reader, often find my self caught up in using sophisticated and intense works for research on projects, etc. However, one book that I have had for many years has helped me greatly through the years among other things. Myths and Legends from around the World is a beautiful book. The myths are interesting and (finally) understandable. Also, the illustrations are outstandingly beautiful and detailed. If you are contemplating buying a book of myths, for kids or adults, this is the one.

GOOD? BAD? OK!

This picture book by Sandy Shepherd is an ok read for people that enjoy different myths and legends told from hundred of years ago. It also has some pretty nice illustration by Tudor Humphries.

The book is about different myths and legends from around the world. They have stories about how animals and plant became how they are, and how Earth is made of soil and above it is sky. I thought some of the stories were interesting, but others were a bit confusing, like some of the stories about God and spirits or founders and inventors.

The context of the book is understandable and good for younger readers to understand, but it has some information that didn't quite make sense. I don't think I liked this book all that much, just because I'm not really a big fan of legends or myths on how our world was made, but indeed they have extremely detailed drawings which spike things up a bit. I recommend this book to whoever has the taste for different legends and myths, children or adults.
