Great stuff from Mad's best years.

Absolutely a top quality book filled with some great Mad moments. I didn't particularly care about the celebrity essays (though Penn Jillette had a good one) but the reprinting of these cartoons is worth the price. The book is oversized, which brings everything to about the size it was in the original magazines. There's also a giant fold-out in the middle with a poster of Alfred on one side and a scenario of the Mad offices by Sergio Aragones on the other. Unlike the recent Mad reprint books, this one dips more into the older Mad stuff of the 60's through the 90's (which I consider the best years for Mad). That means the book will actually be funny to adults rather than the way it currently caters to 12 year olds.

It's a little pricey, but for a hardcover collection of some of the better spoofs and "articles" from Mad, it's a collector's dream. I wish it was about twice as thick, or that they'd come out with a volume 2 soon. This is the stuff they should be reprinting in the collections now.

Absolutely Beautiful****MAD FANS WILL ADORE THIS****

Get this copy of Mad material, so beautifully crafted, and bound in a hard cover with embossed cover art that all Mad collectors will love.
Many comedians have contributed their thoughts throughout this volume.
Judd Apatow, and many others have contributed to this book.
It has a great structure and mix of articles from all the gang at Mad Magazine.

About the Author
Benjamin Baumer is Director of the Program in Statistical and Data Sciences at Smith College. He was formerly the statistical analyst for the baseball operations department of the New York Mets. Andrew Zimbalist is Robert A. Woods Professor of Economics at Smith College, a frequent sports industry consultant and media commentator, and author of many books, including In the Best Interests of Baseball? Governing the National Pastime.

This is a very important book for every baseball person from the fan to the GM to the Owner

This could be a very long review because this very important book contains much to comment on. I will, however, let you read this book to fully grasp what it says. You will have a complete review of baseball statistical analysis from the creation of the box score, through the Dodgers early efforts in the 1950's, to early regression analysis and then the full blown Sabermetrics efforts of today. This book also does a great service in pointing out the errors Michael Lewis added to "Money Ball" the book and errors in the movie, that have bothered me since I first saw the movie. In fact, Lewis violated Bob Uecker's first rule of resumes, "Don't lie about your batting average, they'll look that up." by "altering fact."

Zimbalist and Baumer provide a guide for the reader who want to know what analytics is and what it does, and they go further by stating the limits as well. You will find, contrary to stats geeks, that scouting is in the ascendancy, as it should be.

What I found most enlightening is explanation of the distinction between statistical analysis and data analysis. This is because I think there is too much data out there and data science, through big data management, is the way to go and is the way the secrets locked in the data will be revealed. This is good news for Sabermetricians as their tools will be enhanced.

Simply stated, if you are a baseball person at whatever level, from fan to GM, this is the book for you. I think its impact will be significant and the game will be better understood because of it.

Great book

This is a must-read for anyone interested in analyzing sports. After an entertaining first chapter deconstructing the various errors and omissions in Moneyball, to which the authors attribute the surge of interest in analytics both inside and outside the sports industry, the book proceeds to a very accessible summary of what is and isn't known about the subject. It clarifies the baseball GM's basic analytical problem--that the performance indicators of individual players that are most closely associated with team wins experience very little consistency from one year to the next, so that it is easy to explain a team's performance in a particular season but very difficult to make a reliable prediction of how it will do the next season. It then summarizes the much more rudimentary state of analytics in other sports and explains why this is the case. The book concludes with a path-breaking quantitative analysis of the success of baseball analytics in improving team performance. Highly recommended for serious sports fans.

Inside the ultra-hyper-new age geek baseball analysis thats sticking a 'saber' into the side of old school baseball culture

First, make sure you have either read the book or seen the movie 'Moneyball,' because much of the early parts of this book relates directly to it, especially what is not considered a factual portrayal in the movie or the book of what actually happened concerning the 'saber' revolution in Oakland. Next, be prepared to learn why sabermetricians typically have a very strong academic background in statistics, such as degrees in economics. Then be prepared to 1) realize that the geeks are truly geeks and not usually 'inside' baseball people; 2) be ready to accept that sabermetrics is a discipline that is changing the philosophy on how the game is perceived and played and 3) be ready to be overwhelmed by an onslaught of 'foreign' baseball acronyms that can become very difficult to process, such as WAR, fWAR, rWAR, UZR, FIELD/fx, MORP and DER without a handy guide. Its a brave new baseball world.

Modern adaptation of ancient teaching.

Chakras (that is ‘Wheels’ on Sanskrit) came from ancient Hinduism and Buddhism teachings. They are closely related with meditation, mantras, yoga, crystal healing and other Indian spiritual practices. Many people nowadays, even in Western countries, use them to heal and balance themselves. Beginners can learn a lot from this book. At first it presents basic ideas what chakras are and what types of chakras exist. Next, it describes various techniques one can use to balance different chakras for obtaining excellent mental, emotional, and physical state. Finally, the book answers frequent questions and gives recommendations what to do for widening one’s knowledge in this direction. I think this book is useful for interested people.

This is a wonderful book about the Chakras!

This book really surprised me as it was much better than I expected it to be. Each Chapter of this book is a superb lesson of each of the Chakras. Each chapter has step by step exercises to help each Chakra to work properly.

Really I like all of the chapters and all of the book. However my favorite chapter is Chapter 6...Six Ways of Balancing Throat Chakra.

This is a very helpful book about the Chakras. I totally recommend it.

Old and New

This book provided a fairly thorough compilation of methods of clearing the chakras. The author was well informed as to the newer approaches to improving energy flow through the chakras. While the newer approaches are based on recent scientific discovery and newer health practices this book rightfully acknowledges their value. Traditionalists and old school practitioners might ignore or argue those practices, but I think that's a mistake. Western medicine would call this a well grounded, holistic approach to Eastern health practice. Recommended.

Perfect for the Price!

$150 less than RENTING it at the campus book store, so I was expecting some damage. The only thing wrong is that the back cover is rippled and kind of cracked and there are like 20 pages that are bent on the bottom corner. It was a STEAL!! Very good deal!

If they practiced what they preached....

...They would have included an index!
This book might have a lot of useful information, but it isn't easy finding it without an index or a more detailed table of contents. (That's a basic user need, but not "new", "unique" or "difficult", so I guess DFSS isn't applicable...). A small, spiral-bound book should be handy as a quick reference, so this is a frustrating omission.

The authors haven't solved the problem of busy, difficult to read graphics that plagues other DFSS books (It looks as though they used the same figures as "Design for Six Sigma in Technology and Development"). DFSS authors seem to suffer from an inferiority complex. They feel they have to spruce up the concepts with jargon and needless complexity to make DFSS appear legitimate. It doesn't need that. It needs simplicity and
clarity. This needless obfuscation is perhaps the main reason so many attempts to implement DFSS in organizations fail to take root.

Introduction book for newcomers and students

This book, 'Buddhism: A Way of Life and Thought', was recommended for me during the final hours of the Bamiyan Buddha statues in March 2001. Published in 1980 and later dedicated to Richard Dudley Baker, this book is "...a primer for those who know nothing about Buddhism. Yet those who are already students and practitioners..." - Beginning with the historic Buddha's life story and basic teachings, Ross leads into an introduction to general teachings and practice before the major three specific approaches to Buddhism. Mainly Theravada, Tibetan, & Zen are covered. An over emphasis, and well warrented one, is laid on paragraphs from other fine read Buddhist titles which keeps the book alive. Perspectives from the likes of Dr. H. Saddhatissa, Lama Anagarika Govinda, and Shunryu Suzuki keep a modern touch while reading about legends such as King Mongkut, Emperor Ashoka, Wu-ti, and Shotoku Taishi. Much of this book speaks of the historic and cultural impact of Buddhism but still stays fairly informative to the basic teachings & practices of the traditions. - Ross, an open-minded Christian, includes many photographs, paintings, a glossary, and quite some vocabulary!

An Objective Mind tours Awakened Minds

Informative, unbiased and not overblown history of Buddhism. A former Unitarian as well as more than a few Chritian denominations, Ms. Ross covers the 3 branches with very readable prose. When the subject of miracles comes up, she's objective and does not impose on the reader to believe them. As you might expect, she compares Buddhism with western religions throughout. It's obvious I enjoyed the book but for another reason as well. I sense that Ross is herself a compassionate one who treats her readers with respect for their intellect and was inspired by that. Myself,a former conservative Christian (I just couldn't "get it" for some reason), I appreciated her unbiased and objective writing. As Leonard Da Vinci stated (roughly): An investment in knowledge about a subject is an increase in love for the subject. In this case, the subject is love in a broad sense - a love to help people find happiness by seeing this great religious tradition from its roots as well as current thought. Great book! Always the hard part, tho: practicing what you learn. But Rosses words inspire me to "practice" and not "try" so much.

Great intro to Buddhism's history and forms

Nancy Ross' book is highly recommended to anyone wishing a concise, clearly written introduction to Buddhism. It is focused on the history and development of the many forms of Buddhist practice and not as much on the different teachings put forth by one or another (although these are also discussed). If you ever wondered how Buddhism could be a ritualized religion, a humanistic philosophy, a deterministic psychology, and a social activist movement ... all without contradiction and sometimes simultaneously ... then sit and read this book.
