great book for goat anatomy, but some corrections are needed

I ordered this book as I am a vet student and we only get cows and horses in large animal anatomy. This is a helpful guide, although some of the information is straight up wrong. My book came with a lot of inked writing from the last owner, so many of the corrections were already made for me. This is the only goat anatomy book I have found. The illustrations/diagrams are beautiful, I would buy it for them alone.

We have a copy of this book in the anatomy lab at my vet school. I use it constantly for the goat labs. the illustrations are great. I came up here hoping to get a copy.. but the price is ridiculous. You can probably find the same stuff online for free.

I was really impressed with the photographs and step-by-step instructions in this book. I've never worked with polymer clay before and felt that this book was very clearly written and easy to understand. Highly recommend it!!

Nice book.

I own Angie Scarr's first book too, and prefer the first one to the 2nd one. The 2nd one feels a little rushed, and feels like as much data was crammed in there as possible, so the step by step tutorials aren't as thorough. Overall, though if you already have experience with canning it's a great resource and inspiration. It might just be a little tough for beginners to follow along.

My family in Eastern Kentucky was a nucleus full of interconnectedness - love, support, tradition, and where you were well grounded in a history of community and family. On the other hand, I was raised in Hampton, Virginia, on the Chesapeake Bay. The area was surrounded by a number of other nearby cities that all supported our military industerial complex. Being one of the original 13 colonies and having the real Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria housed in the river in Jamestown, Virginia, and so much history within a 90 mile radius of my house, I grew up learning and living the history of our state and our place in the world (large scale and not personal history). We had Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock, Langly Air Force Base, Fort Monroe Military Base, NASA, the CIA School, and all of the other military branch bases nearby. With people constantly coming to the area and being deployed from our nearby areas, the local people knew they were a community, but we were all part of a bigger picture of the history of our area and state at large. This created a completely different culture for the traditional permanent families of the area...

Even now as an adult I still try to understand and pull my different "roots" and life experiences into a cohesive unit that makes more sense to me. In this effort I have become very fortunate to have come into the possession of a new novel by Marie Parsons called "the Devil's Back," Parsons' book draws focus to the joining of two families in the 1900s in her fictional account of family life and interdependence of the family unit during that time period. Some of her characters, places, events, and descriptions of family are based on her knowledge of her own family history, well-known facts, legands, places, and realities that she fictionalized. She uses the language and expressions that I heard and remembered as a very yound child during my vacations with a large close-knit family.

I became so immersed in the Moore-Castle families, I had a hard time putting this book down to get on with things in my own life. Needless to say, I scoffed up all 276 in three days. It ignited my childhood memories and my questions that I still had that were unanswered for my satisfaction.

Even today some of the subitle differences in language and expressions may have a vastly different meaning to an outsider unfamilar with the Appalachian Region as a whole. You must keep this idea in mind as you read this book to get the most out of it. For example, I moved to Floyd County in Eastern Kentucky, after a time I decided to return to college to become an RN. After I reached my goal and began working in the emergency room of the local hospital,, I had a patient that arrived by ambulance in obvious distress. I had him transferred to our stretcher and began pwreparing IVs and the set up of the crash cart as I tried to question what had brought him to the hospital. I had asked, "how are you?" He answered, "fine." I was at a loss, he was turning a bluish-grey, I tried to question him again what was wrong to which he said he was fine as he blacked out...I began running a code while my ward clerk called it over the intercom. Much later I asked my nursing assistant who had worked there for many years what I had Missed. She told me that I just did not understand +folk-ways." I began a search to discover what that was. It turned out that healmost died because it is impolite to be negative and complain. Since I had asked what was wrong, he was forced to deny having a problem. The major lesson I learned that if you want to help people, you must first learn their culture, beliefs, and traditions. I learned the English language has many different meanings depending on where and who you are with and the gap in generation that you want to talk to, and who the people actually are.

The true beauty of Appalachia is the love of family and pride of its seople, which gives them the strength to endure and to support one another. This truly is a beautiful thing that is becoming a more rate thing in today's world at large. I highly recommend reading "The Devil's Back" because it leaves you with new insights. It could also make you more appreciative of the life you may be living today, in spite of all of the negativity in the news and downturns in the economy...

An engrossing novel set in eastern Kentucky.

"What goes over the Devil's back, comes back over its stomach" is an Appalachian expression that means "What goes around, comes around." In this love story of the May-December marriage of Laurey Castle and Adam Moore and details about their families, the events that go over the Devil's back threaten the marriage and peaceful lives of the two families. I was pulled into this novel with its depiction of life in eastern Kentucky around the turn of the twentieth century. I kept turning the pages to see if love and forgiveness would prevail or who might end as "a blight on the family tree."

The Devil's Back is a beautifully written story of an Appalachian family in the early 20th century. It is a perfect read for individuals, academic classes and book clubs that want to transport their minds to another place, another time, another sect of people. The writer tells the life journey of a working class family in the hills of Kentucky as they experience economic hardships, family conflicts and resolutions, tragedies, love and simple joys. The story, which is redemptive in nature, leaves the reader feeling satisfied and hopeful.

Essential Welty Reading

More than an autobiography, more than a journal of the writing process, Welty has written--has braided with words--a thematic disclosure of self-discovery that runs deep.
At the beginning of the short book, I first became entranced by her description of growing up in the South in the early part of the 20th Century. I felt that I was in the same confident, storytelling hands of Burns (Cold Sassy Tree); Welty re-creates the sights, sounds, and smells of the age, making it familiar to me.
But then she writes of her narrative development, how she started to write, what voice she sought to create, how she started to see her world and present it in her tales. It is in this writing that the book takes on a fascinating layer of depth.
Welty writes of the life of narratives--those she read as a child and those she created--in bringing meaning to her world. She references her world with her work. Or is it the other way around? Still, while reading this book, I felt that I was overhearing the dialogue created between the author and her text. It provides a rare glimpse between artifact and artist.
I would highly recommend this book as a companion reader to her fiction; she tells just enough of her origins that the rest will become evident in its discovery. And she is at the top of her craft as a storyteller.

Autobiography, Welty Style

I've been a fan of Eudora Welty since discovering her short stories as a teenager many, many years ago. I wrote her what is probably a typical teenager's fan letter, and she was kind enough to reply and answer some questions I had in detail. I have since read all of her work, and still consider it a disgrace that she never won the Nobel Prize--she deserved it.
This little autobiography is a great read even for those unfamiliar with Miss Welty's work--it's that engaging. As with her fiction, she is particularly adept at providing the atmosphere in the South where she lived her life. By the time I finished reading of her childhood I felt like I had a true and realistic rendering of her family, told with the tenderness and dignity that marks all of her work.
I've always found Welty's friendship with Katherine Ann Porter to be an interesting facet of her early career, since Porter assumed the role of mentor. Miss Porter was, and is, well known for her beauty and was a 'free spirit' when it came to lovers. Regardless of her other attributes, there is no doubt that Eudora was quite ugly to look at, and certainly led a very different personal lifestyle than did Miss Porter. I hope that one day a biographer will further detail their relationship.
As an aside, I have a dual-tape recording set of Miss Welty reading some of her short stories. She had what must be one of the most pleasant and engaging reading voices I've ever heard. If the reader ever has a chance to purchase her on tape, buy it.
I've long felt that Eudora Welty took on the title of the pre-eminent American female writer of the last century following the death of Willa Cather. This little jewel of a book will delight her old fans and possibly create some new ones.
A great gift idea for anyone enjoying biographies.

"We were all wrapped by the long ride into some cocoon of our own," says Eudora Welty, describing a long family trip in a car.

In general, this is how I feel listening to Eudora Welty's voice; I've collected all of her recorded works because listening to her evokes in me an altered meditative state of bliss. But hearing her on this three-CD recording of her live reading of a memoir with contemplations on writing (Listening, Learning to See, and Finding a Voice) to an audience--well, it's beyond heavenly.

I've always had a fantasy of spending personal time with Ms. Welty. I would like to just hang out with her, listen to anything she'd say--professionally as a mentor writer, or personally. This CD set is as close as I can get to that experience. You hear her goof and apologize, you hear her warmth, and you hear her mesmerizing voice and accent.

There are a very few writers whose voice reading their own work takes it to a level of transcendent joy and meditation for the listener. This is she. This is that.

David L. Cooperrider, Ph.D. is professor and chair of the Program on Business as an Agent of World Benefit at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western University. Diana K. Whitney, Ph.D. is president of Corporation for Positive Change and cofounder of the Taos Institute and a Distinguished Consulting Faculty at Saybrook Graduate School. Great as introduction to AI or as summary of core concepts for those who know AI

What can we accomplish with Appreciative Inquiry philosophy and methodologies for managing change?

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) founder David Cooperrider and long-time AI consultant Diana Whitney answer this question with engaging stories about AI change initiatives in many types of organizations, including British Airways Customer Service, Roadway Express, the City of Denver, Colorado, Office of Finance, and Hunter Douglas Window Fashions Division.

In their sixty-eight page book they contrast a problem-solving approach to change with AI and describe how an affirmative topic guides the change process.

The affirmative topic comes from transforming awareness of a problem - something you want less of - into an affirmative topic which you want more of. They present the logic of AI: people and organizations grow toward and become more of what we inquire and talk about. AI operates on the assumption that all organizations have strengths that provide a foundation for addressing their problems. The AI methodology is to transform problems by linking them to an organization's positive core, its strengths that define it when it is at its best.

AI's 4-D model of change (Discover, Dream, Design, Destiny) comes alive with their stories of change. One-on-one interviews enable organizational members to Discover the organization's positive core and their own contributions to the organization at its best.

From Discovery interviews and reports workshop participants move to the Dream phase. In it they imagine how their best past and present strengths can help them shape a new organizational future. Dream turns into Design as stakeholders draft their image of the ideal organization that will make their dreams come to life. The Destiny phase offers organizational space and time to begin to build long-term supports to sustain work to make their dreams a reality.

Cooperrider and Whitney conclude with key AI principles and the freedoms and power that energize people and organizations who use AI. They highlight accomplishments of AI's first 20 years (1985 to 2005), create an excellent introduction for people new to AI and a great summary of the heart of AI for people who already know AI.

Very good summary of Appreciative Inquiry

I really liked the book as an introduction to the topic of Appreciative Inquiry. The balance between associated cost and content was good too. Be aware that the book is an introduction only. Readers who want to implement AI in their organizations must search for additional resources and examples online or get actual training. Thus, the book falls short as step-by-step guide. Nevertheless, if you are unfamiliar with AI, this book would get you started, like in my case.

BEWARE: New Translation Language by Howard NOT K. Woods

As one who read in 1969 French Class "Le Petit Prince"...and grew up with the Katherine Woods English translation. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED in this book, as are many others.

"...beware of the new translation if you've previously read and enjoyed the Katherine Woods version. Mr. Howard makes the argument in his "translator's note" that the language has changed since the 1940's and that a new translation is needed. I couldn't disagree more. And I [do] speak with some experience on this subject: I read this title at school in the original French language for three different classes, as well as numerous times in English (the Woods version). Katherine Woods beautifully captured the feel of the French original. The new, Howard translation is in a more modern English which mostly succeeds at removing the poetry that previously existed and little else that I can find. It does not make the story any more clear or nuanced than it previously was, rather less so. I find the arguments for a new translation indefencible [sic]."

EVEN the editor's page vii of "A Guide..." uses the NEW translation of the quintessentially known phrase:
St. Ex' FRENCH: "On ne voit bien qu'avec le coeur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux."
Howard's TransBlation [sic]: "One sees clearly only with the heart. Anything essential is invisible to the eyes." [literary direct translation]
K. Woods Translation: "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye." [poetic clarity]
Decide for yourself which one touches your heart. The K. Woods version is only available as a used book or in library. I suggest that we write to Harcourt Inc. [...] NEW version/ Harcourt Brace OLD version same [...] AND demand an ADDITIONAL release of the K. Woods version.

Exupery's Essential Wisdom Distilled For a Quick Drink

This is an extremely short read. It took me 10 minutes, and I am a slow reader. The quotes have been pulled from Exupery's seven works. I am not crazy about Exupery's storytelling such as The Little Prince, but I can tell that he was a deep and caring thinker. Every now and then one of his observations is so artistically succinct and beautifully rendered that it bears restatement.

Here are my favorite quotes from this book:

"People haven't time to learn anything. They buy things ready-made in the stores. But since there are no stores where you can buy friends, people no longer have friends."

"Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other but in looking outward together in the same direction."

"People have forgotten this truth... But you musn't forget it. You become responsible forever for what you have tamed."

"A civilization is built on what is required of men, not on that which is provided for them."

"The tree is more than first a seed, then a stem, then a living trunk, and then a dead timber. The tree is a slow, enduring force straining to win the sky."

"What ought we be? That is the essential question, the question that concerns spirit and not intelligence. For spirit impregnates intelligence with the creation that is to come forth. And later, intelligence is brought to bed of creation."

Just good common sense

Lovely quotations regarding Love, Friendship etc. that make you feel all warm and cozy. Makes you want to pick up and read Wind, Sand, Stars and The Little Prince all over again and also look up at the stars once again with new feeling.
