The U.S. Army's separate armored battalions fought in obscurity by comparison with the flashy armored divisions, but they carried the heavier burden in the grim struggle against the Axis in World War II, argues Harry Yeide in this engaging new study of American armor. Equipped with tanks, amphibian tanks, and amphibian tractors, these units went everywhere the Army went, from the beginning of the war to its very end, from Bataan to Salerno, Omaha Beach to Okinawa. During the campaigns in the Mediterranean and Europe, the separate armored battalions landed in North Africa in November 1942 and battled across the desert before invading Sicily in July 1943 and Italy in September. Other battalions ploughed into Hitler's Atlantic Wall on D-Day and fought through the hedgerows of Normandy until breaking out and racing across France. They endured the futile hell of the H�rtgen Forest that fall, braved snow and German panzers during the Battle of the Bulge that winter, and rolled into Germany for the war's final clashes in 1945. Thousands of miles away, separate tank battalions were among the first Americans to defend against the Japanese tide that swept across the Pacific in late 1941 and early 1942. Following their tenacious but unsuccessful stand in the Philippines, they participated in every amphibious assault the Army conducted during the bloody campaign from New Guinea and the Solomons toward Japan. On islands like Saipan and Peleliu, they fought on sandy beaches entrenched with pillboxes and in dank jungles infested with a fanatical foe. In the war's last year, the battalions returned with MacArthur to the Philippines. Frequently relying on the words of the tankers themselves, Yeide describes the battles, large and small, of the separate tank battalions. Victory was anything but certain, but through grit and guts and experience gained in the welter of combat, the tank troops became a top-notch fighting force and a vital component of the U.S. Army's effort to win World War II. He got it right this time!!!

Mr. Yeide wrote a previous book on independent tank battalions in WWII and it was not really good, but he makes up for that effort with this latest book.

This book is probably one of the best books on the independent tank battalions I have ever read. Mr. Yeide quickly paints the "big picture" for the reader, but then quickly shifts the reader into the trenches and turrets of the fighting men. There are numerous first person accounts from the tankers who fought in the different theaters where independent tank battalions fought. These first person accounts are riveting and give the reader an excellent view of what battle was like for these brave men.

Mr. Yeide also corrected a flaw he had in his previous book, numerous maps and diagrams are in each chapter of this book so the reader can follow along where the tank battalions are and to see what tactics they used.

Overall this book is worth every penny and should be on the bookshelf of any tank enthusist.

another home run from Yeide

This volume continues Mr. Yeide's look at various aspects of American armored forces in WW2. Here he updates one of his earlier work "Steel Victory" with new information. "The Infantry's Armor" is a compliment to "Steel Victory" not really a replacement. The story concerns the tank battalions assigned to support the infantry divisions. This task did not have the publicity or "dash" associated with the units assigned to the armored divisions. Infantry tanks have to move at the pace of the rifleman, they provide mobile fire support to assist with the advance of the infantry, they engage bunkers, machine guns, and other blockades. The tanks endured artillery, mortars, antitank guns, bazooka-type weapons, and other fires. The infantry's tanks all too often had to teach the infantry about their capabilities and limitations. The rapid expansion of the US Army along with rapid deployments meant that tank-infantry training was either minimal or omitted entirely, so both parties had to do "on the job training" while in combat. The fact that they forged a strong team is a tribute to the American soldier. Yeide draws on many official documents, but most importantly on the soldiers' stories to give a complete picture. His books are very readable. I regard this book as a valuable addition to my collection of books on WW2 combat.

Excellent Overview the WWII American Tanker Experience

Independent U.S. Army tank battalions (those not organic to armored divisions) bore a terrible burden in the Second World War. This I knew. However, I did not realize how vast and extreme those experiences ranged from one unit to the next until I read this wonderfully detailed book by Mr. Yeide.

Did you ever wonder how, when, and why independent tank battalions were first created? It's all explained clearly in the first chapter. What was the U.S Army's "Armor Doctrine" in 1940? Basically, there wasn't much of one at all. Successful tank tactics were learned primarily "on the job" through tough trial and error battlefield experiences, and those experiences ranged wildly from Fall of the Philippines, to the deserts of Tunisia, the jungles of Bougainville, the mountainous roads of Italy, and the hedgerows of Normandy. Yeide explains this well by providing example after example throughout the remainder of the book. As a reader, you are transported from light tanks to M4s to amphibious tractors in every setting. Not a major battle or "lesson learned" is missed. Remarkably written for such a sweeping subject!

Not the original

This is not the original book published in the 60s. This book was rewritten in the 70s. If you want to read this book DO NOT read the Preface or the Author's Note. I found it very discouraging and negative towards the author and the book itself. Understandably the Church has tried to distance itself from Merton because he accepted other types of contemplation such as Buddhism and Hinduism in his later life and works. He was very vocal of social injustice. I would have like to have read it in its original form.

No one finishes reading this book without undergoing a complete overhaul of his/her spiritual escutcheon. This is a truly inspired book and the reader is time and again faced with parts of his/her life that calls for redemption and restoration. The book is one of a kind. I have never felt more challenged.

Soak in the Brine!

I would say that is Merton's best work, which is basically Seeds of Contemplation updated. Merton also explains the reason for the update in the beginning. Written while in solitude, it reflects personal change that he had to deal with. As John Henry Newman said, "To live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often." This, Merton had to do. This Merton suggests as the path for each of us. The book is a prayerful study about life and must be treated as such. Slowly, Merton instructs, clarifies and challenges us, chapter after chapter to focus on the real world we cannot see. He insists, "Every movement of my own natural appetite, even though my nature is good in itself, tends in one way or another to keep alive in me the illusion that is opposed to God's reality living within me." By themselves, the focus can only be on "the one I cannot be, the false-self in me, the person that God does not know." As the chapter heading says, we must "pray for our own discovery."

A great resource to accompany this book is given to us by James Finley, a former monk at Gethsemane at the time Merton was there, and from whom he received frequent Spiritual Direction. In his talks that come to us in the series, Thomas Merton's Path to the Palace of Nowhere, Finley gives first-hand knowledge of the value of Merton's instruction as well as a comprehensive plan and purpose of using such a book like this and the scope of what it entails, like a journal of thoughts: forming a meditative exercise taken from that which is derived from reading and reflecting on Merton’s words. What he's saying is: take a year to reflect on Merton's thought. Journal it as you go. Do it again the next year or so. Compare the journals and examine your new understanding derived from another reading. Keep doing this. You can spend a life-time with it! You can continue to grow with it! I believe the substance of what he offers here is found also in his book, Merton's Palace of Nowhere. I am not sure. I have bought the book, but have not spent much time with it yet.

Similarly, I mention that in the Introduction of the book Humility Of Heart by Father Cajetan Mary da Bergamo, it talks about the advantage of using any great book for two or three years as a meditation book. The human mind can be so distracted or unstable at times and can need more time than we imagine to be able to grasp great truths and ideas and integrate them practically into our everyday lives. The suggestion that two or three years spent with the works of a great Master, digesting it fully but little by little, should not seem out of the question. And so, I apply the advice given there to this work of Merton, that "We never get a proper hold of a great spiritual doctrine until we have lived in it and been saturated by it. The soul must soak in the brine until it has become wholly impregnated with its qualities." It is a good teaching from which we can all learn. Merton has provided the brine. We must soak in it.

In the Spiritual Life, the goal is always God: God possessing us and us possessing God. This means there's a lot in our lives that must undergo scrutiny. This means that there are things that should or must be eliminated. In the process, there are things that must be gained. This has to include sanctification, the path the saints travelled. Merton tells us, "for me, to be a saint is to be myself." That is a long path for most of us. Therefore, sanctity is "finding out who I am and of discovering my true self." So, to reach the point where we seek the ultimate goal of life, means to have or find and enter a complex path which Merton calls "Integrity" and explains, "In order to become myself I must cease to be what I always thought I wanted to be, and in order to find myself I must go out of myself, and in order to live I have to die," not much different from what Jesus tells us in the gospel, "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life?" (Mt 16:25-26). All of this takes time! We must give it the time it deserves. Merton will teach us, slowly! He will give us the principles we need to live this out. The most significant gem that I have found in this book is under the heading of "Mental Prayer." It's worth making a copy of the few pages and carrying around with us. It's food and instruction that we can never tire of receiving. It's something that, even when we are sure what he is saying there, it is worth going back to many times throughout the year.

Maybe two or three years are not enough! Maybe there are things that each of us can find in this great work that we must spend a life with! That's what Finley suggests!

Never give up!

Our habits can affect both our present and future life. It’s a cycle for our routine, and then the routine shows our actual behaviour. Bad habits may cause negative impact to us as a person. All of us want to break those bad habits that we have, this book will truly help you transform to a better person. This is the best guide book so far that I read, everything that book says are true. And one thing that book says that I kept holding on until today ‘Never Give Up’. No matter how rough the road is, don’t ever dare to give up.

I was really amazed. This is really a life changing book

Although I found this book by chance when I was just randomly checking online books, but when I read it, I was really amazed. This is really a life changing book. The author discussed the benefits of having good habits in detail. He explains how good habits can lead to stress-free life, make us more productive, stop procrastination, and get us success in every field of life. It provides information about changing bad habits to good habits, making life easy and successful. It is quite easy to understand and follow. Also, the guidelines provided in this book are easy to apply. After reading this book, I realized that there are many bad habits in me that needed to be changed to achieve success in life. The author also gives ways that can help us in adopting good habits. Overall, I highly recommend this book for everyone. Good piece of work and an excellent guide!

About the Author
Georges Dreyfus was the first Westerner to obtain the title of Geshe Lharampa, the highest degree confered within the traditional Tibetan monastic system. He earned his PhD in the History of Religions at the University of Virginia. He is presently Professor of Religion at Williams College.

Sara L. McClintock is an assistant professor of religion at Emory University, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism. She obtained her bachelor's degree in fine arts from Bryn Mawr College, her master's in world religions from Harvard Divinity School, and her doctorate in religion from Harvard University. She has spent time as a researcher at the Central Institute for Higher Tibetan Studies in Sarnath and the University of Lausanne, and has taught at Carleton College and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her interests include both narrative and philosophical traditions in South Asian Buddhism, with particular focus on issues of metaphysics, hermeneutics, and rhetoric.

This is a fine collection of essays communicating the message that Buddhist doctrinal history is no simple monolith but a complex and still changing organic system. If you are philosophically minded and somewhat academically trained in the Buddhist epistemological and ontological systems, then you will find this collection helpful in furthering your understanding. If you are more interested in practice oriented texts or practical application of Madhyamaka to your mind, don't bother with this one.

Wonderful

If you are a practicing Buddhist and/or philosophically inclined then this compilation of essays should prove to be a fruitful investment of your time and money. I am very excited to read through it a 2nd time with hopes of gaining more insight. Not only is it succinct and concise, but it can, if the reader wants, open doors to investigating other primary sources with some degree of dependable orientation. I endorse this book whole-heartedly.
