Why has South Africa been labelled the ‘world’s rape capital’? What don’t we as South Africans understand about rape? In Rape: A South African Nightmare, Pumla Dineo Gqola unpacks the complex relationship South Africa has with rape by paying attention to the patterns and trends of rape, asking what we can learn from famous cases and why South Africa is losing the battle against rape. This highly readable book leaps off the dusty book shelves of academia by asking penetrating questions and examining the shock belief syndrome that characterises public responses to rape, the female fear factory, boy rape, the rape of Black lesbians and violent masculinities. The book interrogates the high profile rape trials of Jacob Zuma, Bob Hewitt, Makhaya Ntini and Baby Tshepang as well as the feminist responses to the Anene Booysen case.

Comprehensive, accessible book about rape in South Africa, but with global resonances.
By Mandisa
Excellent book. Written in a very straightforward way with a strong activist dimension, this is one of the best things I have ever read about rape. Although it looks at South Africa, I found in this book resonances across the world, including where I live in the USA. If I were teaching a class about gender based violence this would be a must read for my students.

Enlightening!
By Cemonne
A good read that causes one to question whether societal norms with respect to the treatment of women and girls are subconsciously meant to subjugate. An eye opener!

I love how Pumla shows me how ignorant I actually am ...
By Mia Cerfonteyn
Wow.
A book unraveling the "mystery" around rape in South Africa. I love how Pumla shows me how ignorant I actually am and how I, as a woman, also play a role in the preservation of rape culture. Just by being to scared to stand up for other women and to stand up for myself when we are being shamed or objectified. I would recommend this book to men and women living in South Africa. Pumla gives the act of rape a name and a face, and talks about female fear mongering. Ignorance isn't always bliss and knowledge can be very empowering.
