About the Author
Reuven Feuerstein is a psychologist who chairs the International Center for the Enhancement of Learning Potential (ICELP) that he founded in 1993. He is the coauthor of Beyond Smarter: Mediated Learning and the Brain's Capacity for Change. Ann Lewin-Benham founded and for 20 years directed the Capital Children's Museum in Washington, DC. She is the author of Possible Schools, Powerful Children; Infants and Toddlers at Work; and Twelve Best Practices for Early Education. Daniel Feuerstein, who created the drawings featured in this book, illustrates children's books and educational tools.

Time to End the Average

This is a book to be read by every educator who thinks that one size fits all -- and that things have to be done differently in schools. It should also be read by administrators, school boards, and politicians who believe that one policy fits all -- or that any of one thing fits large groups of most anything. Rose's book clarifies how simplistically we think about others when it comes to lumping them into categories, having fallen prey to testing, averages, and statistics.
Reading this will change your view -- and if it doesn't, you really haven't grasped the point: we are unique individuals with individual talents. And yes we are part of a larger society with responsibilities --- but we are not numbers and standard "deviations."

A Must read for Parents and Employers

Todd Rose has been on my radar since 2010 when he was a contributor the fabulous book Buzz by Katherine Ellison. His book Square Peg is a laugh our loud, brutally honest memoir that provides inspiration, hope and laughter to parents. The End of Average is a game changer. This book is a must read for parents, educators, employers, and perhaps for all human beings. It helps us understand that our own unique traits, and those of our kids, co-workers and others are not weaknesses or deficiencies.
Todd Rose gives a Ted Talk about The Myth of Average. It is a great talk, but it doesn't do the book justice. I purchased this in a hardcover version as I knew I would be referring to this book over and over as I do my best to find ways to support my kids, my co-workers and myself so we all can be the best we can be.
Thank you Todd Rose for sharing so much of your own story and using your wonderfully unique brain to make this world more user-friendly. I hope that parents and educators will read this book and understand that a child who is not "living up to expectations" may be doing the best they can in a cockpit that isn't designed for them, and that the changes that need to be made may be in the environment and not in the child.

a practical philosophy for the modern world

The author is making some important points about how, in practice, we can change our one-size-fits-all educational and business systems to accommodate more diversity. Our civilization has been moving more in the direction of personalizing education and the business worlds. This has been a result of a number of factors, especially the enormous access, at very low cost, to information resulting from the computer revolution. The author points out how our world, despite these shifts toward personalization, has a philosophy of the average that we have carried with us from the early days of the industrial revolution when the pioneers of education and industry were learning to adjust to mass education and mass production. With the computer revolution, there is no need, in many respects, to appeal to these old ideas. The author wants to see a new way put into practice. I was very impressed with his practical philosophy, and think his ideas are helpful ones. The author puts an interesting historical perspective on this, presents a number of personal stories how his ideas can help identify leaders, and even tells something of his own story struggling to rise to a leadership position. I think, however, his point is that his practical philosophy can help all of us.

Excellent Linear Algebra Text

This is a solid book, but requires a degree of mathematical maturity. Like many of the Dover publications of translated Russian mathematical texts, the book is clearly written, with good proofs that are easy to follow, lots of useful examples, and solutions to problems are given at the end of the book.

Readers should note that the author is a noted Russian mathematician, a former professor of mathematics at Moscow University, one of great centres of mathematical research and teaching in the world. Shilov collaborated with many important mathematicians such as Kolmogorov and Gelfand. If you have read any of Kolmogorov or Gelfand's excellent Dover books, then the style of this book is very similar to those.

Outstanding Book

I find it ironic that my two favourite Linear Algebra texts are this book and the Axler, for they are exact opposites: Axler shuns determinants, and Shilov starts with them and builds much of his theory off them. However, there is no book I have found that has such a deep and clear exposition of determinants. The first chapter alone makes this book worth buying.

However, there's an incredible amount of material in this book, and the later chapters are just as valuable. This is a dense book, but it is fairly easy to read once you get used to the style. I would recommend it to anyone learning linear algebra for the first time, as well as to people who want a deeper understanding or a different perspective.

Like I said before, this book is particularly useful when combined with a complementary text such as Axler, which provides a completely different approach to the subject. This book may come across as a bit old-fashioned, and some might say the material is obsolete, but I believe that everything contained in the book is useful, if only to give the reader a deeper understanding of the why's and how's of linear algebra. And plus: you can't complain about the price!

If you are trying to learn linear algebra for the first time, avoid this book. You will be better served by Schaum's Outline of Linear Algebra Fourth Edition (Schaum's Outline Series). However, if you already have a working knowledge of the basics, have realized the central importance of this subject, and are trying to reach a deeper understanding of it, this is the book for you.

Here is a brief rundown of the contents:

Chapter 1 is on the theory of determinants. It is excellent and forms the basis of the entire book. It also immediately shows the sole focus of this book: finite dimensional linear algebra.

Chapter 2 is on linear spaces. Here as in his other books, Shilov moves to the abstract very early in his treatment. Anyone reading this book should be prepared by at least having the background of Schaum's Outline of Set Theory and Related Topics. It is noteworthy that this book does not even admit the existence of infinite dimensional vector spaces. Indeed, a basis for a vector space must be finite by definition. This is quite nonstandard, but again shows the focus: finite dimensional linear algebra.

Chapter 3 treats systems of linear equations. This chapter moves us back to the concrete, but again this book is only for readers with a firm grasp of the basics. Gaussian elimination is never even mentioned, but Cramer's rule is discussed in detail and used frequently for the rest of the book as a powerful theoretical tool. This might lead the uninitiated to believe that Cramer's rule is actually how systems of linear equations are solved when in fact this is almost never actually the case. Cramer's rule quickly becomes computationally infeasible while Gaussian elimination scales much more gently. And this again shows the focus of this book: theoretical understanding rather than practical manipulation. Sadly, even the lack of scaling for Cramer's rule is not mentioned.

Chapter 4 treats linear functions. This chapter starts with the abstract notion of linear operators and then moves to matrix operations. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors are also covered in this chapter.

Chapter 5 treats change of basis and transformation properties. It has an optional section on tensors which is quite good, but notationally inconvenient.

Chapter 6 is on canonical forms. In many ways this chapter is the theoretical centerpiece of the book. The work requires a good elementary understanding of polynomial algebra, and proceeds at quite an abstract level. But it is excellent for anyone really wanting a firm grasp of this central topic.

Chapter 7 is on bilinear and quadratic forms. Again, it is quite abstract but excellent.

Chapter 8 is on Euclidean spaces and contains one of the highlights of the book in its treatment of the method of least squares. This one section is enough to make the entire book worthwhile.

Chapter 9 is on Unitary spaces. Key stuff for anyone wanting to learn quantum mechanics.

Chapter 10 is on quadratic forms in Euclidean space and contains key material for the student of classical mechanics.

Chapter 11 is on finite dimensional algebras and their representations. This entire chapter is marked as optional and is considerably harder going than most of the material up to this point. But again, it is just excellent and pretty good preparation for anyone interested in group theory and group representations.

Finally, Appendix A is on categories of finite dimensional spaces. This is definitely the most abstract part of the book, but is very well done and again, optional.

There are quite a few typos in this book and some exasperating language errors in some of the proofs like "not more than" instead of "at least as many", and the reader will need to keep a sharp lookout. Also, I wasn't thrilled about some of the author's notational choices.

Problems follow at the end of every chapter. They are generous in number and range from easy to challenging. Even better, many of the problems have solutions or at least strong hints in the back of the book.

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in mastering the theory of finite dimensional linear algebra, and that should include just about any student of mathematics, the physical sciences, the social sciences, engineering, finance, or computer science.

Poor quality, messy and incomplete maps, and missing chapters. A rushed mess all around.

One of my favorite parts about From Software games are the accompanying hardback guides that are always polished, with detailed maps and strategies. Up to this point I've purchased four hardback guides for From Software games: Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, Bloodborne, and Bloodborne The Old Hunters. Unfortunately, I did not notice until it was too late that the DS3 would have a different publisher. Prima has really dropped the ball with this one, the guide seems like it was rushed out the door with little to no editing. I'll just list some of the things I've noticed so far after only looking at it for maybe 20 minutes:

1. The pages are warped and thin, it seriously feels like they may fall out if the guide is opened to a page too many times.

2. There are markings on the sides of the pages indicating which chapter of the guide you are currently in. This also reveals that Prima apparently forgot to include three chapters??? There is no chapter 1, 2, or 10 to be found.

3. The maps have NO enemy locations. Zero. When Future Press was making the guides they had a really nice system for marking where weak and strong enemies appeared on their maps, but there is no such demarcation to be found on the Prima maps.

4. For each area there is a sort of "complete" map that shows the entire area's map. This map does have item locations on it. However, when breaking down the area section by section the "section" maps have no item locations, forcing you to return to multiple pages before where you are (a clear issue when the book already feels ready to fall apart).

5. The "complete" maps of each area have a bizarre and complex system of symbols used to show locations of various things in the area, but the symbols are small and look similar to one another.

6. The way the text and pictures are organized is just... ugly. Some pictures are split across the binding, some are stretched to be a full page (despite clearly not being taken at a high enough resolution to make it look nice blown up). The text is cluttered and every other word is bolded to indicate something important in the section... but how about just make the maps more complete instead of making the text a mess to navigate?

Overally, I honestly cannot believe this made it out the door, there are just so many issues and it is clearly incomplete (how do you just forget three chapters?) Considering the price I just can't see any reason to get this guide, you can find all the important information online in the wikis anyway. The whole reason these guides are nice to get is that they are usually nice QUALITY and have detailed, thought out maps. This cannot be said for this guide. Seriously, buy at your own risk.

One of the worse guides I've bought.

-Right from the beginning the table of contents goes from page 42 to 224 with no breaks in between. None of the walk-through areas are labeled in the table of contents.

-It doesn't have an index...really, it doesn't. Know the name of an item you are trying to find and want to find it in the guide? Good luck searching for it without an index.

-No weapon/armor stats past level one. Want to know which weapons are best to level up to max level for your build? Well you won't find it in this guide.

-Past Dark Souls guides also showed what each point in leveling up did to your character with exact numbers, this guide does not.

-The guide on getting items is absolutely terrible! Here is a quote on how to get an item sitting off the edge of a cliff that is very hard to get: "...experiment with getting this loot." Seriously? Thanks guide.

-There isn't a word about New Game+. Not one word about it.

Dark Souls 1 had one of the best guides ever and this one doesn't even come close. It's missing even the most basic of information about the game.

Soooo bad! Disappointed to say the least.

Prima's guide for Dark Souls 3 looks nice, but provides the bare minimum in content. The fact that From Software decided to go with Prima after Future Press had done an immaculate job on all three previous Soulsborne game guides is mind boggling. I guess they were cheaper because this guide certainly is. No bestiary?! No index?! Missing chapters?! The bonus hardbound notebook is actually the nicest thing about this purchase. If you feel you have to buy this guide to complete the Dark Souls trilogy (like myself), I can't blame you. But if you just feel you need a guide to help you with the game, DO NOT BUY! Use wiki's and youtube for reference.

HUGE Disappointment

If you like numbers, and figures such as "numbers of ships sunk," "total tonnage gone", "on day one, one ship was sunk, on day two, two ships were sunk", etc., then this book is for you. But if you prefer -- like us -- details of confrontations with the enemy, conversations with the U-boat commander and crew, etc., you too will be greatly disappointed.

Casting a Light on the Shadow

"Dispelling Wetiko, Breaking the Curse of Evil," by Paul Levy is a couregous, fascinating, and thought-provoking book. Many years ago when I was in my early twenties I had an eery and disturbing exposure to true evil. I was working as a newspaper reporter and reported on the famous Gary Gilmore murder case and execution. I was given access to over 1,000 pages of letters Gilmore had written from death row recounting his life story, and confessing and describing the murders of the two young men he had murdered. Gilmore had said in his letters that murder is an acceptable act of rage. The evil I was exposed to in reading the letters shadowed me for years. How I wish this precious offering of a book had been placed in my hands earlier. But few their be that have the guts to touch such a touchy subject.
With his own life experience with evil as a powerful motivating force Levy writes, "There is a pscyhospiritual disease of the soul that originates within ourselves and that has the potential either to destroy our species or to wake us up.. ." He speaks of evil as being at "the root of humanity's inhumanity to itself." And he explains that it grows in the petrie dish of unconsciousness.
Recent violent acts in the United States shine the light on our culture as a whole. There is a compelling need for introspection about the kind of emotional climate that gives way to senseless acts of violence. While a reasonable discussion about gun control is relevant, to not go deeper would miss the mark. What are our attitudes toward the mentally ill, the different and odd among us? Do we care about how we tend to criminals and those who have been labeled criminal who are innocent? How is power shared? How are we desensitized? Levy asks, "What is our part in this literal collective unconsciousness?
"We are truly at war," Levy writes. "It is not the war we imagine we are in. It is the war to stay conscious of our own inner shadow, to be aware of how easily we can lose track of our own psyches to the spell Weitko casts."
As he explains, "The Wetiko colllective psychosis is a field phenomenn and needs to be contemplated as such. The field itself is not a seperately existing thing, but a dynamically evolving living process in which we are all participants, simultaneously creating and being created by."
His book is a brilliant echo of "The Soul's Code" by Jungian Psychologist James Hillman in which Hillman states," . . . without a strong conviction that the demonic is always among us -- and not only in its extreme criminal forms -- we hide in denial and wide-eyed innocence which also opens wide the gate to the worst."
Indeed, Levy takes a sweeping view of the many facets of life and how they can be affected by Wetiko -- government, economics, the media, psychoanalysis, always taking the discussion back to the depth and shadows of our own psyche challenging us to notice how Wetiko casts its wiley shadow right within if we do not awaken within our own dream (or nightmare as it were.)
This book is not for the faint of heart, but has the power to throw open the windows and let in the light on a subject that is calling for reflection. I highly recommend it.

Make it more personal

I read all the praise and positive reviews and realized that I had a somewhat different view of this book. Prior to reading it I had never heard of the term wetiko but I came across it in the documentary, "I Am." So I bought Levy's book, started reading it, then discovered Levy's website and his many articles, some of which really resonated with me. I am African American and a few years ago I had travelled to the Amazon Basin of Peru. I took the shaman's visionary medicine and saw for myself many of the same things that Levy was saying about wetiko, but before I knew the word. In effect, Levy was validating my experience and speaking to some deeper truths in my life. I grew up in the Jim Crow South under segregation. My mother, younger sister, and I came to the NYC, the south Bronx. I was 12 years-old during the 70s and in the urban jungle I found at least as much segregation and prejudice and poverty that we ironically sought to escape in the South. These conditions, as far as I can tell from visiting family still there, have deepened since I left the 'hood. So looking in the rearview mirror, I went to the Amazon and sat with the shamans in five ritual ceremonies over nine days to understand 1) how my experience being black and poor had affected me and 2) why conditions in the 'hood persist to this day with seeming tenacity despite the "wars" on crime, poverty, and drugs. In the real jungle I saw in my visions, among other things, that conditions in the `hood were not necessarily what they seemed to be. Namely, they were not independent and separate, standing alone and isolated, from what was going on elsewhere. Rather, the `hood was a microcosm for what was happening in world, especially to indigenous cultures, when faced with disease, guns, steel, and Western education. In other words, if I really wanted to know the state of the world and how modern people were destroying it and themselves, I saw that I didn't need to count CO2 per billion, polar bears, or ice sheets. I could just go to the local prison and count the number of black men "on ice." I could go to the 'hood which is easy enough to find and note the conditions of its schools. I could go to the public housing projects, not 15 minutes from my home and see what they are about. After I returned to the U.S. from the Amazon, I understood that dividing and separating, delineating, demarcating, ghettoing was itself part of the problem. This "crazy" relationship between the 'hood and the world is exactly the name Levy seems to call "wetiko." He puts words to these things and I am profoundly grateful for his honesty and insight. Suffice it to say that as I was reading Levy's online essays I found he was saying original and interesting things when he was most personal, e.g., when he discusses his experiences at the hands of psychiatrists and the psychiatric-industrial complex. I wanted to know more what it was like being Levy. In a paradoxical way, the more he personalized his writing, the more general it was. It was like I could see myself in his experiences. I could identify with his pains and efforts, as well as his joys and personal discoveries. However, the book, Wetiko, takes a different path. He steps out of his personal experience, which is where his power lies. He writes about wetiko rather his experiences of wetiko. He goes into many generalities and political claims which I, for one, found difficult to follow or believe. I'm ok with political activism. I accept the Iroquois view, namely, spirituality is the highest form of political awareness. Yet, an honest assessment of the crisis right here at home in the `hood suggests that no amount of legislation, money, or well-intentioned efforts of the wealthiest nation the world has ever known has managed so far to disrupt conditions there. Indeed, it could be said in a certain way that legislation and political activism created those conditions. That's not to say that politics can't or won't alleviate them but they haven't in the last 50 years. Marianne Williamson has said, "The revolution that will save the world is ultimately a personal one."

A timeless gift, in the nick of time.

Thanks to Paul Levy, the cat is now out of the bag, the genie out the bottle. The very nature of Light, is to expose or illumine that which is not light, i.e. darkness; which is precisely what Levy masterfully illustrates between the covers of "Dispelling Wetiko ..." With this book's release, there is no longer any excuse for being oblivious as to how Evil operates in the World. Evil diminishes and distorts our shared dream, turning our so-called "reality" into a simplistic Spy v. Spy cartoon of "seeming opposites", which left unchecked, relentlessly exploits polarities to spawn epidemics of war, addiction, genocide, and a host of other Archetypal Evils onto the world stage -- conjuring all manner of pointless suffering for millions of the poorest and most vulnerable, caught in the cross-fire.

But Mr. Levy turns all this on it's head, by redirecting our attention to the collective non-local field of potentiated lucid consciousness, ready to interconnect us in wakefulness to creatively recover a right-sized sense of aliveness, and joyful abundance. In this amazing book, Paul Levy artfully puts into words what few have dared to even try: he convincingly sheds a light of compassion to illumine the Darker Side of human consciousness, meticulously tracking the psyche's unconscious shadowy machinations. Chapter by chapter, this book deflates, deciphers and dissipates Archetypal Evil's illusory powers, excavating the way to long hidden Treasures buried there.

Letting no one off the hook, Mr. Levy calls upon every human being to step up, to muster the courage to do personal "inner work", to expose evil where ever it is, within or without, dispelling it's faux-power. Great for beginners

[[VIDEOID:moYANV2L8JFGTJ]]I've been self-teaching my guitar for a few years now. I initially started off with Fingerpicking songbooks from Hal Leonard. This thick volume is very similar to those books. If you are a beginner to fingerstyle guitar, this volume may be a useful practice tool. I was a big fan of these types of songbooks when I was new to guitar and especially fingerstyle solo guitar.

However, now that I'm a bit more skilled, the series is not challenging enough for me. The arrangements are mostly single notes arpeggios with an occasional thumb-picked baseline here and there. Arrangements are mostly limited to the first five frets with a focus on the first three frets. The songs are recognizable but very simplistic. For a beginner, it is great to be able to play more contemporary tunes. However, as you progress these arrangements quickly grow repetitive and tiresome. If you're a beginner interested in fingerpicking guitar and don't already have some of the Hal Leonard Fingerpicking song books (i.e Fingerpicking Acoustic Rock - Guitar Solo, Fingerpicking Pop: 15 Songs Arranged for Solo Guitar in Standard Notation & Tab), this volume has quite a selection of songs to keep you entertained for a while. I had many of the Hal Leanoard Fingerpicking books and a lot of the songs in that series are replicated in this volume. (You can check the Hal Leonard website for the complete songlist)

If you've feel you moved beyond simple fingerstyle patterns and have your sights at more complicated fingerstyle arrangements like Sungha Jung, Chet Atkins or Tommy Emmanuel OR you are looking for companion fingerstyle guitar I'd probably skip this.

Love this book

This is by far my favorite fingerpicking book. So many good songs here, some harder than my level but that's ok. The book lists the chords above if you like to follow that as well as TAB for all the songs. They are in depth enough to sound really good but still easy to pick out. This is my go to book when I just want to relax and sound good. It also lays open nicely

This is nice book for those beginning to play fingerstyle

This is nice book for those beginning to play fingerstyle.
Lots of songs to choose from with a couple of really unique selections.
If the people complaining about the simplicity of the arrangements were as accomplished as they claim they would be writing their own or modifying the ones provided here.
Those who are critical are accurate in that they are not overly difficult.
I think the vast majority of beginner to intermediate players will enjoy the book.
Includes notation, tab, and lyrics to make learning the songs a bit easier to tackle.

A refreshing look at Gandhi

Most books on Gandhi ( especially by Indians) tend to be hagiographies or flippantly dismissive; I found this to be refreshingly dispassionate by an author who has much insight on the subject being Gandhi's grandson and himself a politician-historian. There is so much to learn from the great man's life, both plus and minus, and it is to Rajmohan's credit that he helps the reader to figure them out himself. A great read!
