$150 less than RENTING it at the campus book store, so I was expecting some damage. The only thing wrong is that the back cover is rippled and kind of cracked and there are like 20 pages that are bent on the bottom corner. It was a STEAL!! Very good deal!

If they practiced what they preached....

...They would have included an index!
This book might have a lot of useful information, but it isn't easy finding it without an index or a more detailed table of contents. (That's a basic user need, but not "new", "unique" or "difficult", so I guess DFSS isn't applicable...). A small, spiral-bound book should be handy as a quick reference, so this is a frustrating omission.

The authors haven't solved the problem of busy, difficult to read graphics that plagues other DFSS books (It looks as though they used the same figures as "Design for Six Sigma in Technology and Development"). DFSS authors seem to suffer from an inferiority complex. They feel they have to spruce up the concepts with jargon and needless complexity to make DFSS appear legitimate. It doesn't need that. It needs simplicity and
clarity. This needless obfuscation is perhaps the main reason so many attempts to implement DFSS in organizations fail to take root.

Introduction book for newcomers and students

This book, 'Buddhism: A Way of Life and Thought', was recommended for me during the final hours of the Bamiyan Buddha statues in March 2001. Published in 1980 and later dedicated to Richard Dudley Baker, this book is "...a primer for those who know nothing about Buddhism. Yet those who are already students and practitioners..." - Beginning with the historic Buddha's life story and basic teachings, Ross leads into an introduction to general teachings and practice before the major three specific approaches to Buddhism. Mainly Theravada, Tibetan, & Zen are covered. An over emphasis, and well warrented one, is laid on paragraphs from other fine read Buddhist titles which keeps the book alive. Perspectives from the likes of Dr. H. Saddhatissa, Lama Anagarika Govinda, and Shunryu Suzuki keep a modern touch while reading about legends such as King Mongkut, Emperor Ashoka, Wu-ti, and Shotoku Taishi. Much of this book speaks of the historic and cultural impact of Buddhism but still stays fairly informative to the basic teachings & practices of the traditions. - Ross, an open-minded Christian, includes many photographs, paintings, a glossary, and quite some vocabulary!

An Objective Mind tours Awakened Minds

Informative, unbiased and not overblown history of Buddhism. A former Unitarian as well as more than a few Chritian denominations, Ms. Ross covers the 3 branches with very readable prose. When the subject of miracles comes up, she's objective and does not impose on the reader to believe them. As you might expect, she compares Buddhism with western religions throughout. It's obvious I enjoyed the book but for another reason as well. I sense that Ross is herself a compassionate one who treats her readers with respect for their intellect and was inspired by that. Myself,a former conservative Christian (I just couldn't "get it" for some reason), I appreciated her unbiased and objective writing. As Leonard Da Vinci stated (roughly): An investment in knowledge about a subject is an increase in love for the subject. In this case, the subject is love in a broad sense - a love to help people find happiness by seeing this great religious tradition from its roots as well as current thought. Great book! Always the hard part, tho: practicing what you learn. But Rosses words inspire me to "practice" and not "try" so much.

Great intro to Buddhism's history and forms

Nancy Ross' book is highly recommended to anyone wishing a concise, clearly written introduction to Buddhism. It is focused on the history and development of the many forms of Buddhist practice and not as much on the different teachings put forth by one or another (although these are also discussed). If you ever wondered how Buddhism could be a ritualized religion, a humanistic philosophy, a deterministic psychology, and a social activist movement ... all without contradiction and sometimes simultaneously ... then sit and read this book.

About the Author
Tharran E. Gaines is the author of How to Restore Classic John Deere Tractors (2003), How to Restore Classic Farmall Tractors (2005), How to Restore Ford Tractors (2008), and How to Restore Your Farm Tractor (2013), all published by Voyageur Press. In addition, he has written numerous repair manuals, owner's manuals, and assembly instructions for companies for farming-related companies, and has crafted and produced everything from newsletter and feature articles to radio and TV commercials to video scripts and advertising copy for farming-related companies. In 1991, he started his own business as a freelance writer, and today continues to operate Gaines Communications with his wife, Barb, out of their home office in Savannah, Missouri.

About the Author
John W. Hill received his Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas. As an organic chemist, he has published more than 50 papers, most of which have an educational bent. He has authored or coauthored several introductory level chemistry textbooks, all of which have had multiple editions published. He has also presented over 60 papers at national conferences, many relating to science education. He has received several awards for outstanding teaching and has long been active in the American Chemical Society, both locally and nationally. Now professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin–River Falls, Hill authored the first edition of Chemistry for Changing Times in 1972. Revising and updating this book has been a major focus of his life for four decades.

Terry W. McCreary received his B.S from St. Francis University, his M.S. from University of Georgia, and his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech. He has taught chemistry at Murray State University since 1988, and was presented with the Regents Excellence in Teaching Award in 2008. He is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Kentucky Academy of Science, and has served as Technical Editor for the Journal of Pyrotechnics. In his spare time he designs, builds, and flies rockets with the Tripoli Rocketry Association; he was elected president of the association in 2010. McCreary is the author of several laboratory manuals; General Chemistry with John Hill, Ralph Petrucci, and Scott Perry; and Experimental Composite Propellant, a fundamental treatise on the preparation and properties of solid rocket propellant.

Good e-resources... at a cost.

The book was required reading for my College intro chemistry course. I found it readable, but some of the more technical elements leave a little to be desired in the way of explanation. They do assume that you have some foundation, which isnt necessarily a bad thing.
The Masting Chemistry addition to the text- also required for my class- was a pretty good e-learning resource. I don't typically like E-text as I like to flip back and forth when working on homework and referencing different things, but I found the search function amazing.
If you are on a homework question and you can't find where in the text it is referencing you can type in key words like "pollution" as an example and it will give you different chapters to quicklink to where that term is references and also give you the definition if it is a glossary term. Really useful!.
The downside was of course the price as I feel that $160 for a class book is a little overboard, but that is about par for the course in this genre... doesnt make paying it any easier though.

Great Book and Seller

This book is the perfect substitute for the 14th edition if you don't wish to shell out $168 to buy a used one. There is no difference in the content besides a couple of changed pictures and the slight change in the format. The Book had some issues regarding it but the seller was very understanding and handled the situation immediately. Thank you very much for the unbelievable service!

About the Author
Dr. Pat Gannon-Leary is a consultant and joint partner of Bede Research & Consultancy with Mike McCarthy. Prior to that, Dr Gannon-Leary worked as a researcher at the Universities of Northumbria and Newcastle. Her earlier career experience includes working in academic libraries in the UK and the USA in a variety of roles including Customer Service Manager. During that time she facilitated customer care courses for library staff.

Michael D McCarthy served as a Senior Officer in the Logistics Branch of the RAF, including 3 years as a specialist instructor to Officer Cadets. On leaving the RAF he moved into the management of Customer Support in major Aerospace Companies in the UK and in Sweden. He has wide experience of customer support activity throughout the European aerospace community, covering both major contractors and suppliers. Following early retirement, he has recently spent 2 years working in a support role in a University Library in order to obtain ‘hands-on’ experience of the demands of customer care in this particular environment.

A seminal contribution to academic library 'Library Science' reference collections

The collaborative effort of Pat Gannon-Leary and Michael D. McCarthy, "Customer Care: A Training Manual For Library Staff" is a 242-page training manual for designing and delivering customer care programs for library systems of all types and sizes, including academic, corporate, and public libraries. Informatively enhanced with tables and figures, "Customer Care" addresses both general and specific issues while treating library patrons as 'customers' requiring services. Of special note are the chapters devoted to dealing with challenging situations and team building. Detailed and professional, "Customer Care" is a seminal contribution to academic library 'Library Science' reference collections and very strongly recommended reading for library administrators, policy makers, and staff members.
