Post WW II philosophy still has something to say
By Nancy Moran
I believe the essence of "Escape from Freedom" can be found first in the chapter, "Mechanisms of Escape":
"The person who gives up his individual self and becomes an automaton, identical with millions of other automatons around him, need not feel alone and anxious any more. But the price he pays, however, is high; it is the loss of his self."
And second, under the chapter, "Freedom and Democracy":
"This loss of identity then makes it still more imperative to conform, it means that one can be sure of oneself only if one lives up to the expectations of others. If we do not live up to this picture, we not only risk disapproval and increased isolation, but we risk losing the identity of our personality, which means jeopardizing sanity."
"... We must replace manipulation of men by active and intelligent co-operation, and expand the principle of government of the people, by the people, for the people, from the formal political to the economic sphere."

May change the way you look at the world!
By A Customer
This book offers insight into many everyday issues: thinking, feeling, wanting, character, individualism, politics, most of all freedom - the list goes on. You will learn what it means to have a false self including: pseudo-thinking, pseudo-feeling, pseudo-willing, etc. For example, when you have a "thought" how do you know it is yours? When you want something, how do you know it is you who "wants" it?
This book also explains the rise of Nazism from a psychological and historical perspective, making it actually seem understandable.
Fromm starts the book by talking about our experience as children from the womb to breaking away and moving into the world. The problem he describes is that people on the whole do not want to be free and want to cling to ideas that make them feel as if they were back in the womb.
This book talks much about socialization and in my opinion parallels "The Social Construction of Reality: A Treatise in the Sociology of Knowledge" by Peter L. Berger, Thomas Luckmann, which I believe to be one the best books ever written.

A Definite Piece of the Puzzle - A Book To Be Read
By R. Schwartz
.
An amazing book that pieces modern society starting from the medieval to the renaissance and reformation, that is, from a well defined structured and fixed group identity, fixed meaning to life, determined purpose to life and the here after, to that of the existential, capitalistic and monopolist society that has produced radical individualism with the type of freedom producing severe loneliness, separation and the need to alleviate such emptiness, which has been fulfilled by illusionary means.

Fromm relates a major piece of Western civilization's struggle in the ability to see the correlation between the medieval, secure, self-employed society to that of the Renaissance, an elite aristocracy employing the masses as dependent employees, commodities under a new capitalistic society. It was here only the limited rich could prosper in creativity, while the masses existed in a new existential despair. And so Luther, and later Calvin, devised new forms of Christianity, existential types, to aid these new psychological needs of the masses in accepting this change from security to exploitation.

Fromm goes both into the psyche of man, the nature of societal structure, the development of western civilization and need for security and certainty to that of either authoritarian rule, internal conscious rule or the invisible rule of democratic conformity to public opinion, or automation.

Basic Masochistic/Sadistic desires of man from the extreme, to what is considered "normal" has been seen in the forfeit of the individual self into totalitarian control, capitalistic profit and religious and social concepts that attempt to fill the void of separateness without keeping the self.

Fromm ends his book in what the positive traits of what Faust would be: that of spontaneous living, not compulsive living, but in positive affirmation and movement, in the process of life, not the results, the experience of the activity of the present moment. I couldn't agree more.

On the right track..great action and plot development
By Jayson Olson
Rebel Stand is a great sequel to Rebel Dream and a superb installment to the Yuuzhan Vong war and New Jedi Order series.
Whereas Rebel Dream focused on our heroes recapturing the planet Borleias previously lost to the Vong, Rebel Stand branches out on many fronts which really gives the feeling of a larger war going on and pays attention to our main characters...all this with nonstop action.
1) General Wedge Antilles and Tycho, in charge of the resistance at Borleias continue to develop new strategies and a secretive weapon to deliver a devastating blow to the orbiting Vong worldship. The use and development of Wedge here is great and gives him a push as an important player in the war. His climatic battle scene was great and had shades of the old Rogue Squadron novels here.
2) Han and Leia (leaving young Tarc behind) begin a series of secretive missions to other planets hoping to start a network of resistance cell sites for the war. The action described in their parts is a great throwback to the original Star Wars and it is clear that Leia has not given up her political ways or Han his 'scoundrel' habits.
3) The Jaina Solo, Kyp Durron, and Jag Fel triangle is explored further with new revelations from Kyp. Though not as deep as I would have liked, there is plenty of action when this trio hits the skies to take on the Vong Corralskippers.
4) The traitorous Senator Viqi Shesh is sent to Coruscant with her Vong captors to capture the wayward Jedi. Again, we see how manipulative she can be...too bad the Emporer is no more, she would have been a great addition to the Empire.
5) Tam Elgrin (the recovering Holocam operator used against his will by the Vong), young Tarc and Wolam Tser continue their exploits.
6) Warmaster Tsavong Lah and shaper Nen Yim uncover a conspiracy amongst the Vong priests and take matters into their own hands. Cool to see Tsavong get down to business and show his merciless side.
7) Finally, Luke, Mara, Tahiri and a few others end up on Coruscant for some covert operations. Here they cross paths with Viqi Shesh and her handlers, and a new threat to both the Vong and Jedi. It seems that there is a disturbance in the force, unlike that that Luke or the vong have ever faced. Do the Jedi and Vong form an alliance to rid Coruscant of this new dark side threat? This was probably my only really complaint with this novel was the introduction of Lord Nyax. His origin and development seemed a bit silly to me, as was the climatic battle between Luke, Mara, Tahiri and new baddie Lord Nyax. If author Allston would have handled this a bit differently, I would have given this novel 5 stars, but the silly factor for dramatic sake only was unwarranted. Other wise this was one of the better books in the whole New Jedi Order series.

Very Good (as expected) but Not Great
By Niko
"Very Good"
This book concludes the defense of Borleias that Allston begun in NJO vol 11, "Rebel Dream". As expected from an author with Allston's track record, the book is good - very good in fact, definatelly in the top-5 of NJO.
It is entertaining and fast paced. It takes the time to develop both the overall storyline (if only a little bit) and a host of well-known, well-loved characters - even introduce a few new ones.
There is action on all levels, shoot-outs, Jedi lightsabre fights, big-scale space battles. There's strategy, there is humor, there is cool technology.
So, why "Not Great"?
Well, this book failed to surprise me - at all. To mis-quote Allston himself, the book lacks "layers of tricks". Two thirds of the way, the end can be guessed pretty much by anyone. Wedge Antilles has simply out-thought and out-planned the Vong (in fact their all time best stategist!) and they blindly play right into his hand. A bit of danger at the end, where Antilles' ship is wrecked is the only 2-page thrill.
Remember "Bakta War" or "Iron Fist" or "Solo Command"? In those books the good guys plans where not guarranteed to succeed. Last minute surprises, LAST MINUTE HEROICS saved the day. In "Rebel Stand" this wasn't necessary - as long as everyone sticks to Wedge's plans the victory is preordained - one need not even read the last two chapters.
Also, the book seemed a bit rushed.
SPOILER ALERT)
Most of the Coruscan action seemed to be taking place in a vacuum.
a) We never see any of the Vong's reaction - at least the warmaster's anyway - to everything that happens. I mean, a couple of Mataloks and a few squadrons of skips go missing, parts of the planet are blowing up, Jedi are duelig all over and Tsavong Lah has nothing to say about it? Doesn't even wonder what's going on or what the "infidels" are up to now?
b) Throwing that Senator from Kuat, what's her name off the balcony was lame. After all she's done, all the plot branches she's involved in, she 's simply discarded, as if Lucas called Allston and said "I don't like her, just kill her" right as the author was finishing the chapter..
Lastly, some of the characters were left out in mid-stride. What happened to Lando? At the end of vol 11 he's throwing a party on Borleias. In book 12 I guess he's on holidays.. Same goes for Booster, Corran and others. No mention of Jacen either.
That's all - this one could have been a five star, but not quite. Still, a great read though.

Funny and well-written again, but with a couple problems
By Nom de Guerre
Like Rebel Dream, this book is well-written, fun, and full of humor. Allston brings back the excitment of the Rebellion Era, with Han and Leia, Luke and Mara, and a series of well-known pilots acting out clever and covert schemes once again. In that sense, the book is a breath of fresh air from the very different kind of plot and writing that typifies the NJO series. At the same time, Rebel Stand works well within NJO, taking us to Coruscant after its fall and bringing resolution to the arc involving Viqi Shesh.
While I enjoyed reading this book, there were two parts that bothered me. First, the "dark Jedi" aspect of the Coruscant plot is overwraught and probably out of place. It seemed very weird in the middle of an NJO book. Second, and more important, there is one really abhorrent chapter that deals with Jaina's relationships with Jag and Kyp. I thought Allston had left behind Jaina the self-absorbed twerp, Jag the empty tool, and Kyp the pathetic follower. Oh well.
Despite these two issues, the book really was good, and I think the vast majority of Star Wars fans will be able to find something to their liking in its pages.

Pieces of the Musical World: Sounds and Cultures, by Rachel Harris, Rowan Pease

Pieces of the Musical World: Sounds and Cultures is a fieldwork-based ethnomusicology textbook that introduces a series of musical worlds each through a single "piece." It focuses on a musical sound or object that provides a springboard from which to tell a story about a particular geographic region, introducing key aspects of the cultures in which it is embedded, contexts of performance, the musicians who create or perform it, the journeys it has travelled, and its changing meanings.

A collaborative venture by staff and research ethnomusicologists associated with the Department of Music at SOAS, University of London, Pieces of the Musical World is organized thematically. Three broad themes: "Place", "Spirituality" and "Movement" help teachers to connect contemporary issues in ethnomusicology, including soundscape studies, music and the environment, the politics of identity, diaspora and globalization, and music and the body. Each of the book's fourteen chapters highlights a single musical "piece" broadly defined, spanning the range of "traditional," "popular", "classical" and "contemporary" musics, and even sounds which might be considered "not music."

Primary sources and a web site hosting recordings with interactive listening guides, a glossary of musical terms and interviews all help to create a unique and dynamic learning experience of our musical world.

What Learning Looks Like: Mediated Learning in Theory and Practice, K-6, by Reuven Feuerstein, Ann Lewin-Benham

''Ann Lewin-Benham and Reuven Feuerstein have collaborated to provide a remarkable, readable, and systematic exposition that joins the theory and practice of mediated learning experiences within the real worlds of museums and classrooms. The book provides concrete examples that show museum directors, teachers, and parents the practical 'how to' for building children's cognitive structures.''

--From the Foreword by James Bellanca, International Renewal Institute

''Feuerstein and Lewin-Benham invite us to think differently about what constitutes learning. This phenomenal book makes the mediator's role more practical by providing not only the theory and research to support this strategy, but also specific examples, instructional sequences, and linguistic tools that teachers and parents can thoughtfully and intentionally employ to cause children to think more deeply and to understand their own cognitive processes.''

--Arthur L. Costa, Professor Emeritus, California State University, Sacramento

In this unique collaboration, the authors bring to life the theory of mediated learning. Through numerous examples and scenarios from classrooms and museums, they show how mediated learning helps children to become more effective learners. Readers learn the steps in the process, including analyzing the child's problem, teaching the child to focus on the difficulty, and using the techniques of mediated learning to enable the child to overcome the learning challenge. This is the first book to present Feuerstein's groundbreaking work in accessible language with copious examples of practice. With this volume, educators and administrators will have a reliable and practical way to understand the place of mediated learning in today's schools.

The End of Average, by Todd Rose

In this book, praised as “groundbreaking” by the Telegraph and perfect for readers of The Power of Habit and Quiet, Harvard scientist Todd Rose shows how our one-size-fits-all world is actually one-size-fits-none

The End of Average shows how success lies in customizing to our individual needs in all aspects of our lives, from the way we mark tests to the medical treatment we receive.

All around us, we think, are the average people—with the average height, the average salary and the average house. But the average doesn’t just influence how we see ourselves; our entire social system has been built around this average-size-fits-all model. Schools are designed for the average student. Health care is designed for the average patient. Employers try to fill average job descriptions with employees on an average career trajectory. Our government implements programs and initiatives to serve the average person. For more than a century, we’ve believed that the best way to run our institutions is by focusing on the average person. But when you actually drill down into the numbers, you find an amazing fact: no one is average—which means that our society built for everyone is actually serving no one.

Using principles from “the Science of the Individual,” The End of Average shows how we can break down the average to create individualized success that benefits everyone in the long run. It’s time we stopped settling for average, and Todd Rose will show you how.

Review
“Fascinating, engaging, and practical. Todd Rose dispels the myth that our success can be divined by a simple number or average, whether a grade, a score in a standardized test, or a ranking at work. The End of Average will help everyone . . . live up to their potential.” (Dan Heath, coauthor of the New York Times bestsellers Made to Stick, Switch, and Decisive)

“Todd Rose shows that everything we think we know about ‘average’ performance is wrong. In fact, our one-dimensional understanding of achievement-our search for the average score, average grade, average talent-has seriously underestimated human potential. This book is readable, enlightening, and way above average.” (Daniel H. Pink, author of To Sell Is Human and Drive)

“Rose will change the way you see culture, school, work and everyone around you. Taylorism is officially dead. With compelling stories and an engaging style, he transforms our understanding of who we are and what’s important.” (Seth Godin, author of We Are All Weird and Stop Stealing Dreams)

“Fascinating, engaging, and practical. Todd Rose dispels the myth that our success can be divined by a simple number or average, whether a grade, a score in a standardized test, or a ranking at work. The End of Average will help everyone ... live up to their potential.” (Amy Cuddy, professor at Harvard Business School, and author of Presence)

“Todd Rose’s thought-provoking book challenges the explanatory power of the everyday term ‘average,’ opening our minds to new ways of conceptualizing human variation and human potentials.” (Howard Gardner, author of Truth, Beauty, and Goodness Reframed)

“Todd Rose has achieved a rare feat: he is both provocative and right. He overturns our fundamental assumptions about talent, and offers an empowering way to rethink the world. With exciting stories, fresh data, and bold ideas, this book is far better than average.” (Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of Give and Take and Originals)

From the Back Cover

Are you above average? Is your child an A student? Is your employee an introvert or an extrovert? Every day we are measured against the yardstick of averages, judged according to how closely we come to it or how far we deviate from it.

The assumption that metrics comparing us to an average—like GPAs, personality test results, and performance review ratings—reveal something meaningful about our potential is so ingrained in our consciousness that we don’t even question it. That assumption, says Harvard’s Todd Rose, is spectacularly—and scientifically—wrong.

In The End of Average, Rose, a rising star in the new field of the science of the individual shows that no one is average. Not you. Not your kids. Not your employees. This isn’t hollow sloganeering—it’s a mathematical fact with enormous practical consequences. But while we know people learn and develop in distinctive ways, these unique patterns of behaviors are lost in our schools and businesses which have been designed around the mythical “average person.” This average-size-fits-all model ignores our differences and fails at recognizing talent. It’s time to change it.

Weaving science, history, and his personal experiences as a high school dropout, Rose offers a powerful alternative to understanding individuals through averages: the three principles of individuality. The jaggedness principle (talent is always jagged), the context principle (traits are a myth), and the pathways principle (we all walk the road less traveled) help us understand our true uniqueness—and that of others—and how to take full advantage of individuality to gain an edge in life.

Read this powerful manifesto in the ranks of Drive, Quiet, and Mindset—and you won’t see averages or talent in the same way again.

Time to End the Average
By Stephen G Kennedy
This is a book to be read by every educator who thinks that one size fits all -- and that things have to be done differently in schools. It should also be read by administrators, school boards, and politicians who believe that one policy fits all -- or that any of one thing fits large groups of most anything. Rose's book clarifies how simplistically we think about others when it comes to lumping them into categories, having fallen prey to testing, averages, and statistics.
Reading this will change your view -- and if it doesn't, you really haven't grasped the point: we are unique individuals with individual talents. And yes we are part of a larger society with responsibilities --- but we are not numbers and standard "deviations."
Please Read It.

A Must read for Parents and Employers
By Kile Law
Todd Rose has been on my radar since 2010 when he was a contributor the fabulous book Buzz by Katherine Ellison. His book Square Peg is a laugh our loud, brutally honest memoir that provides inspiration, hope and laughter to parents. The End of Average is a game changer. This book is a must read for parents, educators, employers, and perhaps for all human beings. It helps us understand that our own unique traits, and those of our kids, co-workers and others are not weaknesses or deficiencies.
Todd Rose gives a Ted Talk about The Myth of Average. It is a great talk, but it doesn't do the book justice. I purchased this in a hardcover version as I knew I would be referring to this book over and over as I do my best to find ways to support my kids, my co-workers and myself so we all can be the best we can be.
Thank you Todd Rose for sharing so much of your own story and using your wonderfully unique brain to make this world more user-friendly. I hope that parents and educators will read this book and understand that a child who is not "living up to expectations" may be doing the best they can in a cockpit that isn't designed for them, and that the changes that need to be made may be in the environment and not in the child.

a practical philosophy for the modern world
By Michael George
The author is making some important points about how, in practice, we can change our one-size-fits-all educational and business systems to accommodate more diversity. Our civilization has been moving more in the direction of personalizing education and the business worlds. This has been a result of a number of factors, especially the enormous access, at very low cost, to information resulting from the computer revolution. The author points out how our world, despite these shifts toward personalization, has a philosophy of the average that we have carried with us from the early days of the industrial revolution when the pioneers of education and industry were learning to adjust to mass education and mass production. With the computer revolution, there is no need, in many respects, to appeal to these old ideas. The author wants to see a new way put into practice. I was very impressed with his practical philosophy, and think his ideas are helpful ones. The author puts an interesting historical perspective on this, presents a number of personal stories how his ideas can help identify leaders, and even tells something of his own story struggling to rise to a leadership position. I think, however, his point is that his practical philosophy can help all of us.

Excellent Linear Algebra Text
By S. Murphy
This is a solid book, but requires a degree of mathematical maturity. Like many of the Dover publications of translated Russian mathematical texts, the book is clearly written, with good proofs that are easy to follow, lots of useful examples, and solutions to problems are given at the end of the book.

Readers should note that the author is a noted Russian mathematician, a former professor of mathematics at Moscow University, one of great centres of mathematical research and teaching in the world. Shilov collaborated with many important mathematicians such as Kolmogorov and Gelfand. If you have read any of Kolmogorov or Gelfand's excellent Dover books, then the style of this book is very similar to those.

Outstanding Book
By Alexander C. Zorach
I find it ironic that my two favourite Linear Algebra texts are this book and the Axler, for they are exact opposites: Axler shuns determinants, and Shilov starts with them and builds much of his theory off them. However, there is no book I have found that has such a deep and clear exposition of determinants. The first chapter alone makes this book worth buying.

However, there's an incredible amount of material in this book, and the later chapters are just as valuable. This is a dense book, but it is fairly easy to read once you get used to the style. I would recommend it to anyone learning linear algebra for the first time, as well as to people who want a deeper understanding or a different perspective.

Like I said before, this book is particularly useful when combined with a complementary text such as Axler, which provides a completely different approach to the subject. This book may come across as a bit old-fashioned, and some might say the material is obsolete, but I believe that everything contained in the book is useful, if only to give the reader a deeper understanding of the why's and how's of linear algebra. And plus: you can't complain about the price!

An Excellent Second Book on the Subject
By Jason Dowd
If you are trying to learn linear algebra for the first time, avoid this book. You will be better served by Schaum's Outline of Linear Algebra Fourth Edition (Schaum's Outline Series). However, if you already have a working knowledge of the basics, have realized the central importance of this subject, and are trying to reach a deeper understanding of it, this is the book for you.

Here is a brief rundown of the contents:

Chapter 1 is on the theory of determinants. It is excellent and forms the basis of the entire book. It also immediately shows the sole focus of this book: finite dimensional linear algebra.

Chapter 2 is on linear spaces. Here as in his other books, Shilov moves to the abstract very early in his treatment. Anyone reading this book should be prepared by at least having the background of Schaum's Outline of Set Theory and Related Topics. It is noteworthy that this book does not even admit the existence of infinite dimensional vector spaces. Indeed, a basis for a vector space must be finite by definition. This is quite nonstandard, but again shows the focus: finite dimensional linear algebra.

Chapter 3 treats systems of linear equations. This chapter moves us back to the concrete, but again this book is only for readers with a firm grasp of the basics. Gaussian elimination is never even mentioned, but Cramer's rule is discussed in detail and used frequently for the rest of the book as a powerful theoretical tool. This might lead the uninitiated to believe that Cramer's rule is actually how systems of linear equations are solved when in fact this is almost never actually the case. Cramer's rule quickly becomes computationally infeasible while Gaussian elimination scales much more gently. And this again shows the focus of this book: theoretical understanding rather than practical manipulation. Sadly, even the lack of scaling for Cramer's rule is not mentioned.

Chapter 4 treats linear functions. This chapter starts with the abstract notion of linear operators and then moves to matrix operations. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors are also covered in this chapter.

Chapter 5 treats change of basis and transformation properties. It has an optional section on tensors which is quite good, but notationally inconvenient.

Chapter 6 is on canonical forms. In many ways this chapter is the theoretical centerpiece of the book. The work requires a good elementary understanding of polynomial algebra, and proceeds at quite an abstract level. But it is excellent for anyone really wanting a firm grasp of this central topic.

Chapter 7 is on bilinear and quadratic forms. Again, it is quite abstract but excellent.

Chapter 8 is on Euclidean spaces and contains one of the highlights of the book in its treatment of the method of least squares. This one section is enough to make the entire book worthwhile.

Chapter 9 is on Unitary spaces. Key stuff for anyone wanting to learn quantum mechanics.

Chapter 10 is on quadratic forms in Euclidean space and contains key material for the student of classical mechanics.

Chapter 11 is on finite dimensional algebras and their representations. This entire chapter is marked as optional and is considerably harder going than most of the material up to this point. But again, it is just excellent and pretty good preparation for anyone interested in group theory and group representations.

Finally, Appendix A is on categories of finite dimensional spaces. This is definitely the most abstract part of the book, but is very well done and again, optional.

There are quite a few typos in this book and some exasperating language errors in some of the proofs like "not more than" instead of "at least as many", and the reader will need to keep a sharp lookout. Also, I wasn't thrilled about some of the author's notational choices.

Problems follow at the end of every chapter. They are generous in number and range from easy to challenging. Even better, many of the problems have solutions or at least strong hints in the back of the book.

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in mastering the theory of finite dimensional linear algebra, and that should include just about any student of mathematics, the physical sciences, the social sciences, engineering, finance, or computer science.
